Det ene gir 50% reduksjon i CO2 utslipp regnet over 60 år. Christian Irgens (1966) siv.ark.mnal Christian Irgens worked as a carpenter prior to commencing his architecture studies. Irgens graduated from the Bergen School of Architecture (BAS) in 1995 where he subsequently worked as instructor. He is currently group leader of the architecture department at Asplan Viak in Bergen. Environmental concerns have been central to Irgens work as illustrated by the recent milestone project, Søreide primary school. As senior architect for the Søreide school, his responsibilities included project management as well as coordination with governmental regulatory agencies. Søreide school is an exemplary project and has been featured in numerous lectures over the past two years for its use of wood and sustainable technologies. Irgens is currently working on the Råstølen elderly home project that started one year ago.
3 Emisjoner fra trematerialer - omfang The contribution of wood products towards indoor air quality Martin Weigl Current investigations are performed within the project Wood2New under real-life conditions. Development of indoor air quality within the first half year after move in is accessed based on a monitoring of VOCs, VVOCs, airborne microorganisms, and particulate matter. These measurements get aligned with healthrelated parameters such as pulmonary function, eyelid blink rate, blood pressure, pulse, and an overall health status assessment by means of medical surveys. Holzforschung Austria has a strong R&D background and comprehensive experience in product testing and execution of projects related to the indoor air environment. In one such project Field laboratory emission cell (FLEC)- and test-chamber measurements as well as sorption- and diffusion experiments were used as assessment tools for the selection of construction materials for building up model rooms according to CEN TS Long term exposition experiments were conducted for different wall constructions created from OSB, plasterboard or combinations of them, optionally also equipped with vapour barriers. A general decrease of VOC-emissions could be found throughout weeks and months after the completion of the research objects. The decrease correlated primarily with the type of selected building products as well as with the construction type. The coating of OSB with vapour barrier and/or plasterboard led to a strong decrease of the VOC-emissions decay rate. Real environment experiments were performed at a bigger scale within temporary office containers. Crosslaminated timber, clay-covered timber frame and steel were used as construction materials. Long term monitoring of VOC- and formaldehyde- concentrations in the indoor air were performed. The cumulative indoor air parameter - TVOC showed a steep decrease in the first months after construction with a tendency to fade out to a value which is characterised as very low according to the Austrian evaluation system for indoor air quality. The Influence of the furniture on the indoor air composition was also inspected. The equipment of the test objects with wood based office furniture led to an increase in both TVOC and formaldehyde concentrations. The indoor air composition for the first year(s) of exploitation of office containers could be equally dependent on the choice of building materials as well as the type of furniture Dr. Martin Weigl, (1978), Dr Weigl is head of bioenergy and chemical analytic unit at Holzforschung Austria and national project leader for Wood2New. He finished his studies of wood science and technology in 2011 (PhD) and 2006 (MSc) at University of Life Sciences Vienna (BOKU) as well as a technical school for chemistry and surface technology (1998).He is also member of the forest products society, national management comity member for COST FP 1303 and author of more than 80 publications. 4 Hvordan forbedres inneklimaet ved bruk av tre - hygrotermisk masse How is the indoor climate improved by the use wood hygrothermal mass Kristine Nore Wood acts as a moisture buffer in the indoor environment. With wooden panels, moisture loads with potentially high tolerances and more time for drying than moistening, the indoor climate provide more comfortable compared to other materials. We most likely have benefitted from this effect for centuries. The potential have not been widely studied, but research have started looking into the phenomena this last decade. However the physics to explain, and also marked, this benefit lacks simplified explanation. Energy storage in thermally heavy materials is a defined area of research, defined as thermal mass. The moisture buffering of hygroscopic materials provide the analogous energy storage potential by the moisture absorption and evaporation. The condensation energy, the latent heat, is defined hygrothermal mass. At Treteknisk the hygrothermal mass for mainly for use in residential buildings is studied at the moment. The potential of using hygrothermal mass to reduce the energy budget and increase the level of comfort is in focus. The presentation will show result from laboratory measurements, in situ measurements and simulations Dr. Kristine Nore Affiliation: Norwegian Wood Technology Institute (Treteknisk) Position: Senior Researcher Background: PhD Building Physics, Norwegian University of Sciences and Technology Contact: Kristine.nore@treteknisk.no
5 Brukers perspektiv på byggematerialer av tre - Fokusgrupper i Finland, Norge, Sverige og Østerrike Users perception on construction materials from wood - Focus groups in Austria, Finland, Norway and Sweden Anders Q Nyrud The study includes focus group discussions with end customers (home owners) and building professionals. The topics discussed were related to the understanding of the relationship between building materials and people s perception of the interior environment. A total of seven focus groups discussions were carried out, with a total of 49 respondents from four countries. Natural materials are perceived as materials that comes from nature, with little or no processing. Wood is perceived as a warm material, suitable for surfaces that we touch. Wood is also considered an authentic (honest) material. Wood can give a warm feeling, a feeling of home. Many prefer a cool and conservative visual for interiors in public buildings. Cleanability is not perceived as a problem in indoor environments in regular homes. Some people regard wood surfaces as difficult to clean, but it is not a problem specifically for wood. Cleanability is usually a problem for architects who want to use wood for large wooden floor surfaces. Personnel in charge of operating and maintaining public buildings is often considered an obstacle to use of wood, as they tend to prefer uniform surfaces for easy maintenance and cleanability. Building professionals and female end consumers express more concern with the environmental and ethical aspects when choosing building materials. They seek more information about the properties and origin of the materials, and want detailed information. Male end consumers state that product price and design are most important when choosing construction materials. Environment aspects and ethical considerations are important, but that they lack the time and resources to follow up on this when choosing products. Architects want to design and use environmentally friendly products, and consider using wood as a way of achieving this. Sales and marketing departments at building contractors do not advocate the use of wood, as they do not see a market for wood in indoor environments Dr. Anders Q. Nyrud Affiliation: Norsk Treteknisk Institutt (Treteknisk) Position: Head of Department/Research Manager Background: PhD Forest Economics (Forest Products Markets), Norwegian University of Life Science.
