5 International impact of the project - International research collaboration is discussed since 2012 (with UK, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg Romania and Spain as potential partners) - ReUSE project was part of European Commission s YEAR (Young European Associate Researchers) platform discussions about resources efficiency in 2013 (VTT, VITO, SINTEF, TNO, AICIA) - The project was also followed by BMRA (Building Materials Reuse Association) members from USA and several organizations from Canada, who participated in discussions, surveys and provided valuable feedback

7 Life cycle studies Explored different approaches to show environmental impact of re-use Steel: LCA + LCCA of single building element A: 1x re-used B: 2x re-used C: 3x re-used Timber: MFA of small neighborhood of 50 houses D: 30% re-use in 2020 E: 30% re-use in 2050 F: 30% re-use in 2100 Concrete: To be presented today. 8 Surveys Re-use barriers and opportunities surveys (answers from 3 rd seminar + collected online) The highest benefit was identified in environmental aspects equally as energy, waste and raw materials savings. However, the low performance of building materials, missing standards and legislation were evaluated as the biggest barriers. Survey participants (34 answers from 4 countries)

10 VTT s current activities including re-use (1) CD-WRAM Commitment ( ) This commitment aims to achieve the European policy target of a minimum of 70% of C&DW prepared for reuse, recycled or other recovery by (a) C&DW minimization (dismantling, re-use), (b) recycling solutions, (c) new products, (d) demonstrations, (e) circular economy strategies. Commitment involves 47 partners from 14 EU Countries (Spain, Portugal, Belgium, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Germany, Slovenia, Hungary, Greece). From Finland it is VTT, Finnish Wood Research and Lassila & Tikanoja. (2) Best practices in C&DW management (proposed) Subcontracted work for BIO Intelligence Service (member of Deloitte, France)

11 VTT s current activities including re-use (3) European (Horizon 2020) project (starts in December) Holistic Innovative Solutions for an Efficient Recycling and Recovery of Valuable Raw Materials from Complex Construction and Demolition Waste. BIM platform for the evaluation of C&D waste recovery options. (4) Smart Cities System Dynamics (on-going) Simulation model that adapts different material recovery strategies in the long-term city planning
