(1) Prepare students to be both environmentally conscious and economically successful by using renewable materials (RM) to meet society s needs and solve important problems. 1.1 Contemporary Issues of Wood/RM Use - Understanding the demand and use of RM-based products from a regional to a global perspective and the impact of that use on society and the environment. 1.2 Understanding the principal applications of RM-based materials including the important positive and negative attributes of the use of those products and those of alternative materials. 1.3 Choosing and specifying appropriate RM-based products for a variety of end uses. 1.4 Understanding the major policy, regulation, environmental and other societal issues that impact the manufacturing and use of wood-based products. 1.5 Understanding of professional ethics, including the SWST Code of Conduct, and recognition of ethical responsibility to adhere to those standards. 1.6 Understanding of the health, safety and security issues that impact manufacturing and use of wood-based products.
1.7 Be able to explain and defend the term 'renewable material' from environmental and economic perspectives. (2) Equip students with professional skills and knowledge to use renewable materials to make positive contributions in a world that s rapidly becoming more complicated and challenging. 2.1 Basic Wood/RM Sciences Anatomy and biology of wood and RM Wood/RM formation; wood identification; Understanding the basic physiology of a tree stem, the scientific nomenclature of commercial tree species, cellular composition and organization of hardwoods and softwoods, and the structure of the wood cell wall; Identification of commercial woods using macroscopic and microscopic techniques Pyhsical Charactersitics and Properties Understanding the physical properties and characteristics of RM and RM based composites; Understanding the relationships between structure and its physical properties in RM; Understanding higroscopicity and moisture transport in RM; Understanding the influence of environmental factors on the physical properties of wood and other RM; The ability to determine the physical properties of RM and RMbased composites.
2.1.3 Mechanical Charactersitics and Properties Understanding elementary statics and strength of materials as applied to wood and RM-based composites; Understanding the elastic and strength properties of solid wood in the three orthotropic directions in response to axial, shear and bending actions; Understanding the relationships between anatomical and chemical structure, physical properties and decay on the mechanical properties of wood and RM-based composites; Understanding the influence of environmental factors on the mechanical response of wood and RM-based products subject to short term and long-term applied load Chemical Characteristics and properties Understanding the composition, structure and distribution in the cell wall of the chemical constituents of wood; Understanding the primary differences in chemical composition between hardwood and softwood species; Understanding the polymeric characteristics of the chemical components of wood; Understanding how wood and RM-based composites respond to chemical treatments.
2.1.5 Wood degradation and deterioration Understanding the biological and non-biological agents and conditions that may cause deterioration of wood and RM-based products; Understanding the effects that deteriorating agents have on the material properties of wood and RM-based products Composite Materials Understanding the fundamentals of composite theory; Understanding the morphology of constituent wood elements and their impact on wood composite properties; Understanding the principles of adhesion and adhesion technology Basic lab literacy and etiquete: planning and executing and reporting lab activities. The ability to test, or direct the testing, of wood and RM-based products using standard testing procedures and equipment to assess their mechanical properties, and to interpret the results against known standards or goals. Use writing as a way of learning and thinking critically about course content. Learn and practice writing as professionals in the fields of wood science and technology, and renewable materials : Rows Explain the chemistry and anatomy of plant-based materials commonly used used in building construction and component fabrication.
Have a basic understanding of structure of the cell wall, as well as the chemical properties of each component of the cell wall and how it affects physical properties. Draw each of the cell types used in renewable materials, including approximate geometry, labeling their anatomical structures. Identify whether a sample is a ring-porous hardwood, a diffuse-porous hardwood, a softwood, bamboo, palm, a bast fiber, or a cereal straw using the naked eye, hand lens, For each or microscope. of the material types above, tell what part of the plant it comes from and what the plant type is called. Explain the major differences for wood utilization of the following: heartwood and sapwood; juvenile and mature wood; bole and branch wood; compression wood, tension Define 'quality' wood, and of the normal resource wood. in terms of the material and the user's needs. (3) Equip students to work with, and in, diverse groups of professionals on a global scale. 3.1 Understanding of how science and scientists work to produce, critique and disseminate new information. 3.2 Understanding of work group dynamics and how collaboration can strengthen outputs through individual contributions.
3.3 Exposer to experts from a wide variety of fields and backgrounds through guest speakers and seminars. 3.4 Understanding of global market dynamics associated with manufacture and trade of products made from renewable materials. (4) Inform students on how to start-up new businesses and develop new products based on renewable materials. 4.1 Processing and Manufacturing of RM based composites Mechanical reduction: Understanding the principles of machining wood to produce a variety of wood and wood-based materials; Drying processes: Understanding wood drying processes and systems; Manufacture of solid wood products; Understanding the operations and equipment needed to produce lumber and other; Manufacture of solid wood products; Understanding the operations and equipment needed to produce lumber and other solid wood products from softwood and hardwood logs. 4.2 Understanding the flow of material from the forest to the finished solid wood and/or RM-based products. 4.3 Manufacture of composite materials Understanding the operations and equipment needed to produce wood-based composite materials.
