3 Target group This training course is useful for those who have to handle hazardous materials in practice, such as superintendents and the technical staff on board ships. Superintendents will understand the potential risks that are associated with asbestos and they will be able to assess the need for sampling. This enables proper health management and timely planning for further ship operations. Technical staff on board will be able to gauge the safety situation on board and handle suspicious materials in a correct way. Different stakeholders will therefore work in separate groups. examination 2 days, plus ½ day examination certificate of success 4 Asbestos awareness training for fleet management Our basic ½ day course on asbestos awareness for management imparts knowledge of: the legislative background of asbestos: what rules and regulations apply? considerations for management: what are the management risks associated with hazardous materials on board? risk management and solutions: what actions should you consider and why? The upcoming IMO Hong Kong Convention for the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships has meant that there has been more attention given to hazardous materials on board. In addition, SOLAS (the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea) prohibits any new installation of asbestos-containing materials on new build and existing ships with 500 GT and above. For managers, this raises new issues; for example, ships are already regularly examined by officials for asbestos on board without any prior warning. If conditions are dangerous, the ship is declared as non inspectable, with a consequential ban from territorial waters or detention, and a loss of charter due to the fact that the ship is not fit for purpose. This training provides managers with the information they need so they can respond to these new developments. Practically, it enables managers to estimate risks and make use of new opportunities.

5 Target group Our ½ day asbestos awareness course is especially useful for managers involved in shipping and ship recycling. Some examples: Ship managements will gain a good idea of asbestos-related issues on board ship. They will enhance their knowledge of the relation between asbestos risks and the operational status of the ship, enabling them to anticipate liability issues for example. Shipyard managements will gain good insight into asbestos issues on board. They will be able to assess risks that may be associated with asbestos and anticipate owners and workers liability issues that may result from asbestos-related incidents. The course enables the managements of ship recycling facilities to understand the asbestos situation on board at an early stage. This allows them to assess the need for asbestos surveys carried out by experts before the purchase of a ship.
