2 Instant pricing - the big issue Customers expect instant prices Many Printers are identifying the need for quicker quote response times for their customers, due to the growing market demand for instant prices. Customers are also requesting the facility to enter their own specifications to obtain prices directly, sometimes bypassing the sales and estimating teams completely. Whilst a lot of Printers have deployed a Management Information System (MIS) often their current system offers customers a very limited service for instant prices and online access. Many MIS estimating environments do not provide the response times that are being demanded, from both the internal and online services. As a result, there is a real demand for a complimentary solution that can work alongside a Printer s MIS investment and address the shortcomings of their current set up. 3 PDQ - expert & instant pricing PDQ Predictive Dynamic Quoting Ask most printers what the 'Holy Grail' of their business process would be and some might very well answer 'instant estimating. Of course, instant quotes are not new these days - there are quite a few solutions out there, most of which are web-based. Our own solution, PDQ, is not just hosted on the web. It is a desktop application first, with a customisable (optional) web interface. Most of the solutions in the market at present seem to be aimed at print buyers and are considered by their users as good 'benchmarking' tools when used in budget building processes and when a quick price is necessary. PDQ is a printer s tool. As such, we primarily market our product to printers and it is an expert solution that can produce a job with a technical specification robust and detailed enough to be transferred directly into an MIS. We believe that our system is the best available in the market place because our software is the only package 'clever' enough to quote for all methods of print production including digital web offset and POS. As an intelligent estimating system PDQ uses a sophisticated mathematical algorithm to check every possible production method to determine the most cost-effective method of producing a job. It simultaneously calculates a carbon footprint for each part of the production processes using an energy / CO2 equivalence formula, displaying the total carbon footprint for each specification calculated. This allows the user to not only compare the fiscal cost of each job, but also the environmental cost.

The online capability enables you to give your customers the facility to get their own prices and place orders with you. Your own staff can also use the online environment to get instant quotes wherever they have access to the internet. As well as catering for general customer enquiries, access can be fully tailored and personalised to give your key customers a unique experience built around their specific print buying characteristics.

7 Development plans PDQ development Core to the initial success of PDQ is our approach to development. We have always proactively sought the opinions and feedback of printers, especially those that become customers of PDQ. It is our view that to guarantee a product's success you have to ask what the market wants first and then deliver it, not the other way round. This is why PDQ has evolved so quickly and will continue to do so in the future. JDF compatibility Building connectivity to other MIS vendors has become top of Haybrooke s priority list. The recent addition of a JDF-friendly XML file output is the first step towards integration of its product into other receptive MIS solutions. From the very first time that PDQ was placed into the hustle and bustle of our printing customers, the requests for connectivity to their incumbent MIS began. Although not required to be connected to any system to provide our service, we believe that responding to customer needs and desires is one of the keys to being a successful company. As such, Haybrooke Associates have taken the step to completely reprogram its xml file output to become fully JDF compatible. This is no mean task and will make PDQ the first product of its kind to sit above MIS in the CIP4 JDF schema.

8 PDQ in the future Web to print [W2P] Ever since we began to shape and tailor our online environment to our customers needs, we recognised that our solution would have to address the issue of online personalisation of products prior to printing that has become known as web to print. Classically, a library of products are stored that can be modified to suit, prior to going to print. The variable data is nearly always text content and the printing method is nearly always digital. It is an ideal solution when small run, highly personalised products are required, such as business cards, letterheads and so on. PDQ online already possesses a framework very akin to W2P in so far as it stores a library of favourites that the user may select to generate an instant price and then use our environment to transfer the artwork directly to the suppliers ftp hot folder. Haybrooke has every intention of progressing this to become a full W2P solution, including product personalisation within the next 6 to 12 months. When we do, our product will become the most powerful pricing engine and W2P combined solution available online anywhere.

9 PDQ and the environment Carbon footprint in an instant One thing users of PDQ can be certain of: it is the only system in the UK with a built-in carbon footprint analyser. Every production method and each component of these production methods, platemaking, printing, folding, etc, are all individually analysed to show the user the carbon footprint of each component, resulting in a total CO2 emissions of each job - and every conceivable alternative. PDQ uses a carbon equivalence formula to calculate this information based upon published data relating to the usage of energy measured in kilowatt s and the effect this usage has on carbon emissions at fossil fuel power stations. PDQ knows the energy required to manufacture a job by looking at the kwh ratings of the machines used to manufacture each job and the time taken to do it. By converting this energy cost into CO2 emissions and adding to it the environmental cost of the paper, an accurate estimate can be provided for the environmental impact of a job It can even show the cost to offset it and make the job carbon neutral using NatWest s published cost per tonne to offset the emissions (which currently stands at 13 / tonne). This gives Printers the abiliy to use this feature to their advantage by simply providing the advice to its customers, who might become encouraged to make more jobs carbon neutral, or even become an agent for the scheme. In today's tough economic climate this might just make the difference between winning and losing a job, even encouraging the buyer to pay more for an environmentally friendlier solution?
