INTRODUCTION The three years ago founded AAPG Miskolc Student Chapter can be proud of its great development. The chapter counts currently thirty members, who are very enthusiastic in helping the work of our officers and learning the newest results of the science geology. Among the members of the chapter there are BSc, Msc and PhD students in several fields of earth sciences such as geology, geophysics, hydrogeology, petroleum engineering and mining engineering. The students of our chapter maintain the student traditions of the Mining Academy of Selmecbánya and keep it as a heritage. Moreover, we are open-minded about future and want to know more about hydrocarbon exploration. We have an executive committee meeting every month followed by a chapter meeting. 4 FIELD TRIPS: SZOLNOK FIELD TRIP (12. APRIL 2013) Szolnok lies in the middle of the Hungarian Great Plain. This town is about 110 kilometres far from the capital. Szolnok is one of the centre of the MOL Plc. Here we found the largest drill core in Hungary. In the neigborhood of the drill core can be found MOL workstation. Our chapter members interested about drill core, so we organized one day long field trip. Sixteen Chapter members participated on the field trip. The first part of the day we visited the drill core where Györgyi Juhász talked about the paleoenviroment. We compare the delta and turbidite facies. Györgyi show us how we can found the sedimentary structures and how we can identifies the delta and turbidite facies based on typical sedimentary structures. Whereas we discuss the paleoenviroment we search hydrocarbon indication on the core and then we controled the mark on the Well logs. After the visit we listened to Viktor Sőreg s lecture about the estimation methods of hydrocarbon reserves in MOL Plc. Headquarters in Szolnok. After the basic concepts were expounded, he presented the development of the geostatistical methods in the last decades. Student investigate sedimentary structures 3
DEMJÉN FIELD TRIP (7. JUNE 2013) Demjén situated at the foot of the Bükk mountain. This town is about 82 kilometres far from Miskolc. Demjén oil field was discoverd 60 years ago. The production continues until today. We wanted to know how work and which equipments are used to the oil production. With this object we organized field trip on Demjén. Six ELTE and seven Miskolc SC members participated on the field trip. Firstly János Blahó, geologist presented us the geology structures of the oil field. He show us geological maps with wells and some seismic section. We come to know, that the Demjén oil field made up by 3 different part: Demjén - west, Demjén - east and Demjén - Pünkösdhegy. The three part of area bordered by fault zone. The geological structures really interesting and complicated on the whole field. Because of the lots of faults we find here different type of trap. The trap size are variable, so here had to apply various production method. The second presentation was given by István Varga. István (engineer) talked about the past and present of oil field and we met closer how changes the workers number and the production of Demjén field. János presented complex geology After the lectures we visited the reservoir rock outrcrop. The age of Kiscell Clay (reservoir rock) is Late Eocene - Early Oligocene. We thanks János Blahó and István Varga the amazing lectures and the oppurtinity that we get to know how work the Oil production in Demjén. Team in front of the oil rig 4
DOLOMITES FIELD TRIP (29 JUNE 3 AUGUST, 2013) Organiser: ELTE AAPG Student Chapter Leaders: János Haas, Piero Gianolla Between 29 July and 3 August, 2013 we had the oppurtunity to take part in the Dolomites field trip which was organised by the ELTE AAPG Student Chapter. On the first day we left Budapest at 8 am and arrived to the campsite (Campitello di Fassa, Italy) in the evening where we slept in tents. We had four days for excursion. We left the campsite early in the morning and we spent the whole day in the field, visiting beautiful and interesting places in the aspect of geology. On the second day we visited the Bletterbach Canyon where we saw the Permian and Lower Triassic successions. Bletterbach canyon 5
The third day was for discovering the Latemar platform and the surrounding basins. We spent the fourth day at the Sella Platform (Upper Triassic Platforms and Basins), where we had three main stops which were the followings: - Passo Pordoi: the progradation of Sella Platform - Gardena Pass: slope megabreccias and prograding slope sediments - Sella Pass: olistolites On the fifth day which was the last day of our trip we stopped at the Lagazuoi and Tofana di Rozes. On the sixth day we travelled back to Budapest. In conclusion, we can say that the field trip was very well organized and we all enjoyed every second of it and each other s company and also got useful information about the geology of the Dolomites. 8 PETROLEUM PLAY POTENTIAL AT THE CONTACT OF MOESIAN PLATFORM WITH THE CARPATHIAN OROGENY (19 AUGUST 26 AUGUST, 2013) Organizer: Bucharest Student Chapter Participants: From Hungary: Eötvös Student Chapter and Miskolc Student Chapter, from Romania: Bucharest Student Chapter, Cluj Student Chapter and IASI AAPG Student Chapter. In the summer, we had the opportunity to attend to the Summer Fieldtrip of the Moesian Platform and the Carpathian orogeny in Romania. On the first day we travelled to Bucharest, Romania. After we occupied our accommodation, we went to the meeting place to met with the others from the different Student Chapters. It was great to see some familiar faces from the previous summer field trip which was organized by Eötvös Student Chapter last year, in Hungary. On the second day we visited the Romanian oil company, PETROM, member of OMV Group, where Dr. Csaba Krezsek gave us a lecture on Petroleum Geology of the Eastern Carpathians. We got to know that the best reservoir rocks of this area are Eocene, Oligocene to Miocene ages. On the field we got more details about these rocks through outcrops. In the afternoon we went to the University of Bucharest, where two lectures were taken by the representatives of two oil companies: The first was: Prospectiuni: Romanian oil and gas explorational potential. The second was: Chevron: Natural gas from shale (An Overview). From 3rd 7th days we were on the field. During the fieldtrip we travelled around East-, Southeast-Romania, the main part was the Moesian Platform, which is the major unit of the Carpathian Balkan foreland. The Moesian Platform contains of two tectonic blocks: Central and South Dobrogea. (From 7
Team in front of the Petrom oil company We were devided in 5 groups, the groups consisted of Romanian and Hungarian student, too. We had to work together on the field. It was an excellent experience to work with students from other nation. On the third day we visited South-Dobrogea, where bioturbated limestone, Quaternary Loess deposits, Eocene shallow marine limestone and dolomite can be found. On the fourth day we went to Central-Dobrogea, where we visited a Jurassic limestone and dolomite quarry, than we studied Jurassic carbonate ramp and reef, also metamorphosed sandstones, which clearly displayed the wave ripples. Bioturbated Limestone 8
On the fifth day we were on the area of North-Dobrogea, where we examined a quarry of Middle Upper Triassic limestone, which contains also clay, lots of silicates, thin graphite layers, and lots of fossils in different sizes, for example ammonites, crinoideas, ostracodas, onchoids, sponges, and bivals. On the sixth day we travelled to the Eastern-Carpathian foreland, Cretaceous and Paleogene nappe system, where we saw a tectonic half-window, and outcrops of Lower and Upper Cretaceous lithofacies and cyclicity, Paleocene Lower Eocene conglomerates and sandstones, Oligocene dysodilic shales and conglomerates. Triassic limestone with rich fossils On the final day we visited the Neogene depositional environments and tectonics, where Early Middle Miocene molasse deposits were examined by us. In the afternoon, we returned to the accommodation in Bucharest, and in the evening we travelled back to Hungary by train.
