1 SE MELBOURNE - AGED CARE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM FACT SHEET Program Intake The first program intake is planned for August 2014, and will target Level 2 Leaders working in the SE Melbourne region. Level 2 Leaders have been defined as mid-level leaders or middle management. Level 2 Leaders are commonly responsible for multiple teams or an entire service/function. According to organisational size and function, these leaders are likely to occupy positions as Director of Nursing, Community Programs Manager, Residential Care Manager, Facility Manager, Hotel Services Manager, Quality Manager, Human Resources Manager, and more. Entry into the program is via nomination; which includes an organisational change project that has the mandate of the Board and/or Executive. Each nominee must also have an executive sponsor. Program Design Program design has been guided by the Australian Aged Care Leadership Development Strategy and mapped to the Aged Care Leadership Capability Framework. The course will be offered via 2 options: OPTION 1: Graduate Certificate in Management (22230VIC) - Victoria University The program consists of 10 full day workshops over a 10-month period. The program will incorporate: Leadership skills and knowledge, with a focus on building confidence through a strengthsbased approach Interactive face-to-face workshops that provide participants with an opportunity to discuss new skills and knowledge, self-reflect, and network, Individual action-learning plans to support participants in applying leadership, innovation and change within your organisation A personal leadership journal to support in the understanding of self and to provide insights into their growth as a leader
2 A mentoring program to model and support their leadership journey A board-approved Industry Project designed to support and demonstrate leadership, change and innovation in your workplace Unit of Competency VU21222 Lead creative thinking and innovation practices in an organisational environment Workshop VU21226 Manage people in an organisational environment VU21221 Manage the development, implementation and review of strategic business plans VU21225 Develop and manage risk management strategy Industry Project Leadership Journal Mentoring Program VU21224 Manage legal, regulatory and ethical compliance requirements in an organisational environment Victoria University Qualification Pathways Participants who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate in Management (22230VIC) will be eligible for advanced standing into the: Master of Health Science (Aged Services) This is the only graduate program in Australia that combines the study of aged services management with dementia care services. The course is designed to meet the needs of professionals seeking career advancement in the management of residential, retirement and community services. This qualification also provides two Graduate Diploma exit points: Graduate Diploma in Aged Services Management Graduate Diploma in Dementia Care and Service Master of Business Administration In 2014 VUs MBA was ranked number one in Australia and number six in the global Top 20 by CEO magazine for its excellent lecturers, small class sizes, student diversity, value-for-money and international study options. The MBA covers a broad range of business and management disciplines and can be tailored through selection from a range of elective units from a range of areas of study. Victoria University Facilitators Gerard Glennon (Lead Facilitator) - MBA, Grad Cert in Leadership in Education and Training, Grad Cert Education (Tertiary), Dip Business Management, Cert IV Training and Assessment VU, BHSc (Nursing), Grad Dip Nursing (Cardiothoracic) ACU, RN (RHH, Tas), MBTI and DiSC Accredited Facilitator Gerard s focus is on facilitating the development and delivery of customised leadership and management development programs aligned to vocational qualifications at Graduate Certificate, Advanced Diploma, Diploma and Certificate levels. Prior to commencing his career in leadership education, Gerard held a variety of positions in healthcare, having trained as a Registered Nurse at the Royal Hobart Hospital prior to completing a Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing). Kerry Ryan - PhD (Education), Graduate Certificate in Management and Leadership Development; Cert IV Workplace Assessor; Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Education and Training; Master of
3 Nursing; Graduate Diploma Clinical Management and Practice; Graduate Certificate Palliative Care; Bachelor of Nursing; State Enrolled Nurse; Diploma of Applied Science Kerry has extensive combined experience in health industry practice, education and leadership. She is passionately committed to supporting nursing research and workforce development in palliative and aged care. Her industry currency means that she understands the demands placed upon the workforce. Kerry has previously managed a 90 bed Aged Care Facility (Douttagalla) which was fully staffed and achieved 100% occupancy. She brings her considerable facility management experience and expertise with her to the delivery of this program. Geoff Hurst - Graduate Diploma - Occupational Hazard Management, Certificate IV in Assessment & Workplace Training, University Certificate of Management, Bachelor Engineering (Mechanical), Diploma Mechanical Engineering Geoff is a passionate OHS leader and facilitator with extensive experience in the leadership and management of OHS functions. Geoff has overseen successful implementation of workplace safety, health and ergonomic programs and solutions in a variety of settings. Geoff is skilled in coaching workplace teams and mentoring colleagues and students to deliver OHS risk reduction through collaboration. He is highly capable in the management of new initiatives and programs and adaptable to any industry. Peter Holyoake - Master of Business Administration (MBA), Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing (Dip.M.), Diploma in Vocational Education and Training, Diploma in Training Delivery and Design, Diploma in Management Studies (DMS), Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, Past Chair of the ITT Education and Training Committee Peter is an energetic and lateral thinking senior executive with board level experience of general management, operation management, marketing and sales management in small, medium and large organisations. His practical experience is under-pinned by excellent tertiary qualifications. Sebastion Loppolo - Advanced Diploma of Business (International Business), Diploma of Business Management, Diploma of International Business, Certificate IV in Business (International Trade), Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training Sebastian is a specialist consultant with specific expertise and extensive experience in Management and Leadership, Intercultural Communication and International Business. He is an accomplished vocational educator, facilitator and presenter, with an infectious positive and enthusiastic attitude, that promotes inspiration, motivation and drive. Jocelyn Angus (Curriculum Advisor) - Associate Professor, Gerontology and Aged Services; PhD. (La Trobe University); Graduate Diploma in Gerontology, (La Trobe University); BA (Psych), (Macquarie University); RN (St Vincent s Hosp.); RM (Royal Women s Hosp.); Cardiothoracic Certificate (Guy s Hosp. London) Jocelyn s previous experiential knowledge in aged care nursing and the scholarly base of her thesis (aged care policy and legislation) provided essential grounding in her teaching and her coordination of a suite of Postgraduate Aged Services programs. Leadership management is the core educational outcome of this suite of programs, which are designed to meet the needs and demands of the aged services industry in the 21st century. As Associate Professor and Course Coordinator of a suite of Postgraduate Aged Services programs, Jocelyn has a commitment to leadership excellence in the delivery of services for older people. Investment: VU s Graduate Certificate in Management (22230VIC) per participant price is $10,000. To demonstrate their commitment to this project and the aged care industry, they have offered a cocontribution via subsidised pricing at $5000 per participant for the pilot intake. Participants in the Graduate Certificate in Management (22230VIC) may access VET FEE-HELP to pay for all or part of their tuition fees.
4 OPTION 2: LV Aged Care Leadership Intensive delivered by Leadership Victoria Aged Care is facing more change and challenge than ever before. Successful organisations will be the ones with the best leaders. Leadership Victoria utilises 25 years highly impactful experience to provide a Leadership Intensive perfect for Aged Care Level 2 and above leaders. The Leadership Victoria Aged Care Leadership Intensive equips mid and senior leaders for the new world. Mapping closely to key elements of the Aged Care Leadership Framework, this program provides the catalyst and tools to recognise the attributes that you have and how to develop them. You will be put out of your comfort zone and into a journey of self-discovery and development as a leader, exploring leadership with authority and leadership across complex boundaries: leading change without formal authority. Your learnings will be immediately applicable in your workplace and help you transition your organisation and the Aged Care sector to the new world. Who should enrol? This program is focused on people who report to Aged Care CEOs: high potential emerging leaders who show the characteristics of the next generation of leaders. What is involved? The program comprises LV s unique mix of seminars, scenario based learning, guest speakers from aged care and other industries, reflection sessions and other learning based activities. The experience is intense and targeted. A graduation and celebration is held at the conclusion of the program, and graduates will form the kernel of a new leadership movement in Aged Care: LV maintains ongoing contact and can facilitate participation in an Aged Care Leadership Community of Practice. What will you learn? The program maps to the Aged Care Capability Framework, with special emphasis on: Understanding Self: Learn how behavioural styles including your own affect leadership Leadership Preferences: Explore your own style of leadership in the context of the workplace Workplace Challenge: identify a personal workplace challenge and develop a leadership action plan to address it Leadership Qualities and Values Change Drivers and Dynamics Critical & Creative Thinking Emotional Intelligence A Systems Perspective: Learn about the links between strategy, execution and employee engagement Redefining Leadership: Compare traditional and contemporary approaches to leadership Leadership and the big issues Communicating as a leader Strategic Networking Sustainable Leadership Program Faculty Leadership Victoria is led by Richard Dent OAM FAICD. Richard holds multiple Masters Degrees and other post- graduate qualifications, has more than 20 years practical experience in leading very large non-profit teams, and utilises his experience at Harvard in specialist leadership
5 development to help create excellent tailored leadership programs. The Leadership Victoria facilitator team includes Tony Matthews, Katalin Howell and Bill Jarrard, who between them have almost 50 years experience as specialist leadership development facilitators. The LV team are all tertiary qualified, have profound leadership development experience including lecturing in some of Australia s top universities, hold accreditations in many psychometric tools, utilise leading-edge techniques, and provide an unparalleled leadership development experience. Leadership Victoria programs also includes a range of guest speakers who are leaders from various industries and backgrounds. These guest speakers provide a particularly rich depth of experience in the program, giving participants privileged and confidential access to established leaders, to learn from their successes, their errors and their views on the future. Program Duration 5 days (run over 5 months) Investment Standard Fee: $3,990 (plus GST) Initial intake: $2,750 +GST (after LV co-contribution of $1,240) Organisational commitment Organisations that wish to nominate a Level 2 Manager for the first intake will be required to provide an executive level sponsor and a mandated change project for each participant. The change project will form the professional practicum of either program. Projects are to be identified by the participant s organisation and have sign-off at board or executive level. Criteria for suitable projects: Projects should be about business change or service improvement Projects should be within the sphere of influence of the person participating i.e. an organisational-wide change in a large organisation may not be appropriate for a coordinator in a regional office, but may be suitable for a team leader in a single site nursing home. Think about the shortest problem statement you can make to summarise the issue that needs to be addressed e.g. our funding approval processes are inconsistent. Consider the management support available. If lots of management support is available, then the candidate may be able to tackle a bigger issue. Focus on smaller issues that are manageable and measureable.... don t boil the ocean! Projects could be done jointly if you are nominating two or more people from your organisation Where possible, projects should align with strategic goals, but if these are unclear, then link the project to the benefit it will bring to the organisation. Projects should comprise both a technical component and an adaptive (i.e. leadership/systemic change management) component Can be completed / achieve milestones in the appropriate timeframe. Mentoring Program A Mentor will be identified for each program participant: regional mentors are currently being identified through nomination of Level 1 Leaders* within the SE Melbourne region. A Mentoring Program guide has been developed for the SE Melbourne Leadership Program based on mentoring program design specification developed by the Australian Aged Care Leadership Development Project.
6 *Level 1 Leaders are those with strategic and cultural responsibility for an entire organisation or division. Level 1 Leaders will often play a role in influencing community and/or stakeholders beyond their organisation. In small to medium-sized organisations this is likely to be the CEO. In medium to large-sized organisations Level 1 leaders may include general/executive/senior managers and department heads. Leadership Network SE Melbourne Leadership Network will be established for the on-going support of leadership skills development in the region. An Options Paper will be delivered to the first program intake group who will be involved in the design of the network. A Launch Event will be held for program participants, mentors, and executive sponsors.
