2 Keynote Speakers Joseph R. Betancourt, MD, MPH Director, the Disparities Solutions Center, Senior Scientist, Mongan Institute of Health Policy, Director of Multicultural Education, Massachusetts General Hospital, & Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School Dr. Betancourt directs the Disparities Solutions Center, which works with healthcare organizations to improve quality of care, address racial and ethnic disparities, and achieve equity. He is Director of Multicultural Education for Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and an expert in cross-cultural care and communication. Dr. Betancourt is also a co-founder of Quality Interactions, Inc., an industryleading company that has created and deployed a portfolio of e-learning programs in the area of crosscultural care and communication to over 125,000 health care professionals across the country. Dr. Betancourt served on several Institute of Medicine committees, including those that produced Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Health Care and Guidance for a National Health Care Disparities Report. He also actively serves as an advisor to the government, healthcare systems, as well as the public and private sector on strategies to improve quality of care and eliminate disparities. He is a practicing internist, co-chairs the MGH Committee on Racial and Ethnic Disparities, and sits on the Boston Board of Health. Dr. Betancourt is on the Boards of Trinity CHE, a large, national healthcare system, as well as Neighborhood Health Plan, based in Boston. He practices Internal Medicine at the MGH Internal Medicine Associates. Carolyn Clancy, MD Assistant Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Quality, Safety and Value, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Former Director of AHRQ Carolyn M. Clancy, M.D., was appointed Assistant Deputy Under Secretary for Health (ADUSH) for Quality, Safety and Value (QSV) for the Department of Veterans Affairs, August 25, Prior to her appointment as ADUSH for QSV, Carolyn M. Clancy, M.D., served as Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), from February, 2003 through August, 24, Dr. Clancy, a general internist and health services researcher, is a graduate of Boston College and the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Following clinical training in internal medicine, Dr. Clancy was a Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania. Before joining AHRQ in 1990, she was also an assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Clancy holds an academic appointment at George Washington University School of Medicine (Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Medicine) and serves as Senior Associate Editor, Health Services Research. She serves on multiple editorial boards including JAMA, Annals of Family Medicine, American Journal of Medical Quality, and Medical Care Research and Review. She is a member of the Institute of Medicine and was elected a Master of the American College of Physicians in In 2009, was awarded the 2009 William B. Graham Prize for Health Services Research. Her major research interests include improving health care quality and patient safety, and reducing disparities in care associated with patients race, ethnicity, gender, income, and education. As Director, she launched the first annual report to the Congress on health care disparities and health care quality. 1

3 Panelists Shikha Anand, MD, MPH Director of Strategic Alliances and Initiatives and Obesity Program Director, National Institute for Children s Health Quality Dr. Shikha Anand is a pediatrician with expertise in community health, obesity, and the Patient-Centered Medical Home. She is trained in public health and health services research. For 5 years, she served as the Pediatric Director at a Federally Qualified Health Center, where she was responsible for implementing the Medical Home model of care. She received her BS from Union College, her MD from Albany Medical College, and her Masters in Public Health from Boston University. She received her fellowship training in General Pediatrics and Health Services Research at Boston University. In addition to the Medical Home, her interests include information technology in medicine and the use of for provider-patient communication. She continues to provide primary care to underserved children at the Codman Square Health Center in Dorchester. J. Emilio Carrillo, MD, MPH Vice President, Community Health, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Associate Professor, Clinical Public Health and Medicine, Weill Cornell Medical School Dr. J. Emilio Carrillo is VP of Community Health at NewYork-Presbyterian (NYP) and Associate Professor of Clinical Public Health and Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. He graduated from Columbia College, received his M.D. and M.P.H. from Harvard, and served for ten years in the faculties of Harvard Medical and Public Health schools. He trained in Internal Medicine at the Cambridge and Massachusetts General Hospitals and continues to practice and teach one day per week. Dr. Carrillo leads the Washington-Heights Inwood Regional Health Collaborative and heads NYP s efforts in population health and community health development. Dr. Carrillo also served the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation as Senior Fellow in Residence - Eliminating Racial-Ethnic Disparities in Health, and as Distinguished Scholar in their Network for Multicultural Research on Health and Healthcare. He cochaired, the Steering Committee of the National Quality Forum s project, Endorsing a Framework and Preferred Practices for Measuring and Reporting Culturally Competent Care and participated in several other NQF Expert Panels and Steering Committees. He has published widely, served in many State and Federal advisory councils, received numerous awards and has been appointed as a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine. Dr. Carrillo has innovated population health programs while at Harvard, the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation, and the NYP Community Health Plan. His research and collaborations at Harvard laid the foundation for Patient Based Cross-Cultural Healthcare. His work has helped to define the fields of Cultural Competence and Cross-Cultural Communication. 2

4 Kathyrn Coltin, MPH Director, External Quality Data Initiatives, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Kathryn Coltin is Director of External Quality Data Initiatives at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. Kathryn leads Harvard Pilgrim s initiatives to collect and use data on members race, ethnicity and language to identify racial/ethnic disparities and co-leads Harvard Pilgrim s clinical programs to reduce identified disparities in care. Kathryn has served on several national advisory committees in the area of health care performance measurement, including the Committee on Performance Measurement for the National Committee for Quality Assurance. She was a member of the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics, chairing its Quality of Care Workgroup. Kathryn holds a master s degree in public health from Boston University and completed predoctoral course work in the Joint Program for Advanced Studies in Health Policy at Boston University and Brandeis University. U. Michael Currie, MPH, MBA, Director, Health Equity Service Program, UnitedHealthcare Michael Currie is Director of the Health Equity Services Program, and is responsible for the development and coordination of company efforts, initiatives and interventions to identify health disparities, as well as the enhancement or implementation of programs and services to address health disparities. Prior to joining UnitedHealthcare, Michael was a Major Accounts Manager at CareFirst BCBS, managing CareFirst s largest block of public sector business and has held roles in both the public and private sectors with responsibilities related to disease prevention, wellness and health benefits. Michael serves on various boards and committees of organizations such as the National Health Plan Collaborative, the Howard County Community Action Council, the Howard County Department of Social Services, the Mid-Atlantic Business Group on Health and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc, Tau Pi Chapter. Karen Donelan, ScD, EdM Senior Scientist at the Mongan Institute for Health Policy and the MGH Institute for Technology Assessment at MGH, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School Dr. Donelan is a prominent survey scientist who has conducted numerous national and international surveys of the experiences of patients and health professionals in health care systems. She has designed and led several dozen surveys of physicians and nurses about labor supply and workplace environment issues. Recognized for her skill in designing surveys to measure the experiences of diverse professional and patient/consumer populations, Dr. Donelan aims to further an understanding of how patients overcome barriers to referral in health care systems. Recent research focuses on the assessment of patient coaching and navigator programs, as well as consumer-focused hospital and physician quality ratings. Dr. Donelan joined the MIHP faculty in 2003, following more than a decade at the Harvard School of Public Health and several years in leadership at a company that provided assistance to patients confronting critical illnesses. She has received considerable external support for her survey research, including the National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society, as well as multiple charitable foundations (Commonwealth Fund, 3

5 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, Avon Foundation, and Gillette Foundation). Building on an interest in the role of advertising and marketing to consumers, she has played a leading role in projects for Johnson & Johnson s Campaign for Nursing s Future, marketing departments in several health systems, and assessments of the impact of direct-to-consumer advertising, She has published extensively in major medical, nursing, and health policy journals, and is a peer reviewer of survey and disparities research for seven journals. She is a member of Academy Health and the American Association of Public Opinion Research and is past president of the New England Association of Public Opinion Research. Deborah Enos, MSPH President and Chief Executive Officer, Neighborhood Health Plan Deborah C. Enos is responsible for providing strategic leadership for the company by working with the Board of Directors and the Senior Leadership Team to establish long-range goals, strategies, plans and policies. In addition, Ms. Enos builds and maintains working relationships with key external industry organizations both locally and nationally, including the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers, the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans, and the Association of Community Health Plans as well as advocacy groups, state regulatory agencies, and others. Ms. Enos currently serves on the boards of several organizations including the American Heart Association, Association for Community Affiliated Plans, Massachusetts Association of Health Plans, Massachusetts Association for Mental Health, and UMass Boston College of Nursing and Health Sciences Advisory Board. Zoila Torres Feldman, RN, MSc Chief Expansion Officer, North End Waterfront Health Zoila Torres Feldman RN, MS is currently the Chief Expansion Officer at North End Waterfront Health (NEWH), a federally qualified health center, a certified PCMH, recognized nationally for its work on health care policy and as an early implementer organization. In her role, she is expanding the center s reach to the underserved. Presently, Zoila is also an independent health care management consultant with MSGC Inc. with a focus on compliance with administrative and governance federal requirements and Federal Torts Claims Act. She is best known for her many years of work at Great Brook Valley Health Center, and her accomplishments related to creating an integrated primary care and public health model of care. Under her leadership GBVHC, now the Edward M Kennedy health center was recognized for its work related to identifying and implementing systems to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities through the use of data and attention to public health imperatives 4

6 Joseph Kvedar, MD Director, Center for Connected Health, Partners HealthCare Joseph C. Kvedar, MD, Founder and Director of the Center for Connected Health, Partners HealthCare, is creating a new model of healthcare delivery, developing innovative strategies to move care from the hospital or doctor s office into the dayto-day lives of patients. Dr. Kvedar is leveraging information technology cell phones, computers, networked devices and remote health monitoring tools to improve care delivery. Dr. Kvedar established the first physician-to-physician online consultation service in an academic setting, linking patients from around the world with specialists at Harvard-affiliated teaching hospitals. Based on the technology platform developed at the Center, Healthrageous, a personalized health technology company, was launched in 2010; Dr. Kvedar was a Co- Founder and Chair of the company s Scientific Advisory Board. He is internationally recognized for his leadership and vision in the field of connected health, and has authored over 90 publications on the subject. Dr. Kvedar serves as a strategic advisor at Qualcomm Life, West Health Institute, Puretech Ventures and BD Technologies, and is a mentor at Blueprint Health and Rock Health, providing guidance and insight to developing companies. John Halamka MD, MS Chief Information Officer, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center John D. Halamka, MD, MS, is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Chief Information Officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Chairman of the New England Healthcare Exchange Network (NEHEN), co-chair of the national HIT Standards Committee, co-chair of the Massachusetts HIT Advisory Committee and a practicing Emergency Physician. As Chief Information Officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, he is responsible for all clinical, financial, administrative and academic information technology serving 3000 doctors, employees and two million patients. As Chairman of NEHEN he oversees clinical and administrative data exchange in Eastern Massachusetts. As co-chair of the HIT Standards Committee he facilitates the process of electronic standards harmonization among stakeholders nationwide. As co- Chair of the Massachusetts HIT Advisory Committee, he engages the stakeholders of the Commonwealth to guide the development of a statewide health information exchange. Cynthia E. Hodge, DMD, MPH, MPA President, National Dental Association Foundation Dr. Cynthia Hodge is President of the National Dental Association Foundation. Prior to her recent retirement, she served as Associate Dean for the Office of Community and Outreach Programs under the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation s Pipeline, Profession & Practice: Community-Based Dental Education grant at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. In this capacity, she was responsible for increasing access to dental care, increasing diversity among the dental school student body, and mentoring. A passionate advocate for enhancing care to underserved populations, she is an academician, a mentor, and speaks locally, nationally and internationally on health disparities. Hodge is a Past President of the National Dental Association. She was Director of the General Practice Residency Program and Chairperson for Hospital Dentistry at Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry. She spent many years as a solo oral health 5

7 care practitioner before returning to academia. As Senior Advisor to the President and CEO, she developed and implemented the US Health and Human Services Health Disparities Collaborative in Oral Health at a local Federally Qualified Community Health Center (FQHC). She is a national and international lecturer and speaker. Among her numerous awards are: Dentist of the Year Award, Fellowship Award for Distinguished Service, Distinguished Service and Leadership Award", Tennessee s Outstanding Achievement Award presented by the Governor of Tennessee, and the US Assistant Secretary for Health Award For outstanding leadership in providing care to people with HIV infection and AIDS. Kris McCracken, MBA President/CEO, Manchester Community Health Center Kris McCracken serves as the CEO of Manchester Community Health Center and has been with the organization for 17 years. She was recently named a Public Health Hero by America s Health Rankings from the United Health Foundation during their recently announced survey findings. She serves as the chair of the Data Subcommittee of the NH Health & Equity Committee and was a contributing writer of the NH Statewide Plan to End Health Disparities. David E. Miller, DDS Chief, Division of Oral Health, Illinois Department of Public Health Dr. David E. Miller currently serves as the Chief for the Division of Oral Health within the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) since As Chief, he is charged with the mission to assure that the people of Illinois have access to population-based interventions that prevent and reduce oral disease and to promote oral health as integral to overall health. To achieve this goal, Dr. Miller plans, develops, administers and coordinates oral health programs in Illinois by evaluating programs and policies on local, state and federal levels. Dr. Miller spearheaded the 2012 Statewide Oral Health listening tour, which will be integrated into the 2012 third version of the State s Oral Health Plan. Miller is ensuring that the state s plan is geared towards an action agenda and in alignment with Health People 2020 goals. Prior to his position at IDPH, Dr. Miller served as Illinois State Representative of the 29th District representing portions of the south side and adjacent southland suburbs of Chicago from His legislative focus included healthcare, education funding reform and payday loan reform. Miller s experience transcends across legislative, appropriations and rule making processes in Illinois. During his tenure Miller held leadership positions and served on numerous committees-most notable as Assistant Majority Leader, Chairman of Higher Education Appropriations and the Joint Committee of Administrative Rules. Miller had sponsored legislation to promote oral health. Miller was the Chief Sponsor for legislation that mandated dental examinations for K, 2 and 6 th grades. Dr. Miller has practiced general dentistry for over 25 years and is in private practice. Throughout his career, he established a Chicago dental office to treat an underserved population--children, who are the majority of his patients. 6

8 Elizabeth Mort, MD, MPH Senior Vice President of Quality and Safety, Chief Quality Officer, Massachusetts General Hospital and Massachusetts General Physicians Organization Elizabeth Mort is a nationally recognized expert in quality and safety in the US. She is a practicing general internist with expertise in performance management and quality improvement. She serves as the Senior Vice President of Quality and Safety at the Massachusetts General Hospital and serves as Senior Medical Director at Partners HealthCare, an integrated delivery system in Boston, Massachusetts. At MGH she leads high stakes quality and safety work across a broad range of initiatives. In her role at Partners, she leads the care redesign efforts aimed at common episodic procedures and conditions. Sarah Rafton, MSW Director, Center for Diversity and Health Equity, Seattle Children s Hospital Sarah Rafton, MSW, has 15 years experience in human services policy and nonprofit administration, dedicated to improving the lives of children and families. Sarah began her career in legislative advocacy to increase access to health and mental health care for people living at low-income levels. Sarah was instrumental in the creation of Seattle Children s Hospital s Center for Diversity and Health Equity in 2007, and has led QI efforts to increase language access for Limited English Proficient families, as well as establishing patient navigation at Children s. Sarah was director of the Odessa Brown Children s Clinic from , supporting a community clinic dedicated to the primary care, dental, and mental health needs of a diverse and lowincome population. Sarah recently returned to the Center for Diversity and Health Equity, and is director of the Center. Wayne Rawlins, MD, MBA National Medical Director, Racial and Ethnic Equality Initiatives, Aetna Inc. Dr. Wayne Rawlins is a National Medical Director for Racial and Ethnic Equality Initiatives at Aetna, reporting to Aetna s Chief Medical Officer. In this role, Dr. Rawlins serves as the lead clinician focused on identifying activities to address racial and ethnic disparities in health care for Aetna s members. Dr. Rawlins has also assumed the additional role of Chief Medical Officer, Aetna Student Health. Aetna Student Health provides high quality, innovative and competitively priced health insurance programs for college and university students. Prior to his current role, Rawlins was National Medical Director and vice president of medical management for Aetna Government Health Plans, Aetna s business unit responsible for Department of Defense uniformed services and VA customers. Preceding this he was head of Aetna Condition Analysis, leading enterprise-wide medical cost management activities. While at Aetna, Dr. Rawlins has served in several senior clinical operational roles prior to assuming his current role. These included head of business planning and reporting for National Medical Services reporting to Aetna s Chief Medical Officer. Prior to this he served as the regional medical director for Aetna s northeast region, providing access to health care services for more than two million members. He was senior patient management medical director for the northeast region. Dr. Rawlins also led the design, development and implementation of Aetna s industry-leading end-of-life care program. Dr. Rawlins received his medical degree from the University of 7

9 Connecticut in 1980, then completed an internal medicine residency and chief residency at the University of Rochester in New York. He is board certified in internal medicine. Dr. Rawlins received his M.B.A. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Prior to joining Aetna in 1997, he was a physician manager with the Northeast Permanente Medical Group for 13 years, treating a wide variety of patients in a busy primary care practice. Pamela Siren, BSN, RN, MPH Vice President of Clinical Quality Operations, Health Partners Plans Pamela Siren recently joined Health Partners Plans in Philadelphia as the Vice President, Clinical Quality Operations. She is responsible for clinical quality 22 measurement and improvement, and NCQA accreditation. Prior to her Health Partners appointment, Ms. Siren served as Vice President of Quality & Compliance at Neighborhood Health Plan, Boston. Her responsibilities included executive leadership for the Medicaid contract, procurement and reprocurement of four Medicaid programs, compliance with State and Federal law as well as quality measurement, improvement, health equity and accreditation. NHP is in the top ten ranked Medicaid Health Plans in the U.S. Ms. Siren has worked in health care for more than 30 years. She started her career as a registered nurse in the inpatient setting, and expanded her career to include public health, quality management, evaluation, compliance and Medicaid Managed Care. She has served on the NCQA Advisory for Medicaid Health Plan Accreditation and she regularly contributes to The Essentials of Managed Care. Ms. Siren earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Widener College and a Masters in Public Health from Boston University. She is a member of the American Society of Quality and completed the Disparities Leadership Program at Massachusetts General Hospital in Juana Slade, CDM, CCF Director of Diversity and Language Services, AnMed Health Under her leadership AnMed Health has been recognized for its work in cultural and linguistic competence by the US Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights; the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; and Advance for Nurses, a nursing trade publication. Juana is a graduate of Claflin University in Orangeburg (SC) where she earned a bachelor of arts in Social Science and Political Science. She completed diversity studies through the American Society for Human Resource Management; the American Institute for Managing Diversity in Atlanta, GA; and the Upstate Diversity Leadership Academy of Furman University in Greenville. Juana is a Cultural Competence Fellow of the Health Research Education Trust, an affiliate of the American Hospital Association; a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and founding member and vice chairperson of the American Leadership Advisory Council to the Institute for Diversity in Health Management. Juana was the founding president of the South Carolina Society of Healthcare Professionals, an affiliated personal membership group of the South Carolina Hospital Association. 8

10 Peter Slavin, MD President, Massachusetts General Hospital Peter L. Slavin, MD became the President of Massachusetts General Hospital on January 1, From , he served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization, which included over 1,700 physicians and employed nearly 1,000 of them. From 1997 to 1999, Slavin served as President of Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Before that, he did his training in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1984 to 1987 and was Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer from 1994 to Slavin graduated from Harvard College in 1979, Harvard Medical School in 1984, and Harvard Business School in Slavin teaches internal medicine and health care management at Harvard Medical School where he is a Professor of Health Care Policy. He serves on the Boards of the Massachusetts Hospital Association, Council of Teaching Hospitals of the Association of American Medical Colleges and is chair elect of the Association of American Medical Colleges. He also serves on the Overseers Board of the Geisel School of Medicine and is a member of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Corporation. Mini B. Swift, MD, MPH, FACP Assistant Chief Medical Officer, Medical Director, Health Equity and Utilization Care Management, Highland Hospital, Alameda County Health System Dr. Swift is the Assistant Chief Medical Officer for Highland Hospital, a member of Alameda Health System. She also currently is the Medical Director of Health Equity and Utilization Care Management. Her clinical duties include wardattending responsibilities on the medicine inpatient teaching service and providing clinical oversight in the ACMC s Healthy Hearts clinic, which serves patients with heart failure. Dr. Swift is an internist with extensive experience in development of clinical programs and inpatient process improvement, particularly focused on throughput and reducing readmissions. Dr. Swift attended Mills College in Oakland and earned her medical degree at Kasturba Medical College, India. She completed her residency and Chief Residency in the Department of Internal Medicine at Highland Hospital, an affiliate of the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. She completed a Masters in Public Health from University of California, Berkeley. She is a fellow of the distinguished Disparities Leadership Program at Massachusetts General and of the California Healthcare Leadership Fellowship. 9

11 Workshop Speakers Zary Amirhosseini, M.Ed. Disability Program Manager, Office of Patient Advocacy, Massachusetts General Hospital Zary Amirhosseini is the Disability Program Manager at Massachusetts General Hospital. In her role as Disability Program Manager, Zary develops and implements policies and procedures for a newly structured disability services unit, delivering unit-based and hospital-wide training for staff and physicians on issues related to disabilities. She also serves as a central resource for information concerning accessibility of MGH services to individuals with disabilities. She works collaboratively with numerous stakeholders and key leaders across the hospital to ensure compliance with local and federal standards and regulations, and also works to implement creative and cutting-edge strategies to address issues of equal access to healthcare for individuals with disabilities. Prior to working at MGH, Zary was the Disability Services Coordinator at the Harvard Divinity School. Bev Beckman, RN, CPHQ, ACM Project Manager, Jewish Hospital -KentuckyOne Health Bev Beckman serves as the Project Manager for the Upstream to Equity Project in Louisville, KY and the Health Connections Initiative Project in Louisville, KY and Little Rock, AK. Both are grant-funded projects focused on transitions of care programs for our vulnerable populations. The goal is to identify disparities associated with this group of patients and implement interventions that will result in improved healthcare access, healthcare system navigation and healthcare utilization. Bev is an RN with forty years of healthcare experience in multiple settings that include Director level roles in Access Management, Throughput, Palliative Support, Case Management, Utilization Review and Transitions of Care Programs. She is certified in Healthcare Quality, Case Management and is a Lean Sigma Green Belt. In addition to her professional background, she is an active social outreach advocate in the Louisville community serving as an active board member for the Family Community Clinic and the Louisville YMCA-Northeast. She also works actively with Health Literacy Kentucky and the Kentucky state-wide task force working toward development of a Community Health Workers Coalition. Caroline Bennett-AbuAyyash, PhD Health Equity Project Coordinator, Mount Sinai Hospital Caroline s research and publications have focused on immigrant access to health care, the link between poverty and mortality, and best practices in the standardization of demographic data collection. After working with the American Psychological Association on promoting evidence-driven policy and program development on Capitol Hill (Washington, DC), Caroline is currently the Health Equity Project Coordinator at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto. 12 James Corbett, JD, MDiv Senior Vice President, Community Health Improvement and Values Integration, Centura Health, Fellow, Division of Medical Ethics, Harvard Medical School Mr. Corbett is senior vice president of community health and values integration at Centura Health, a multi-state integrated health system and Colorado s largest healthcare provider. He is a fellow at Harvard Medical School, Division of Medical Ethics. Mr. Corbett was appointed a 4 year term to the National Institutes of Health s National Advisory Council for Nursing Research by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebellius. Mr. Corbett s research interests are at the intersection of health, law, and bioethics with a focus on health finance and the influence of large institutions on patient care and population health. Over the course of his career, Mr. Corbett has worked in four different health systems providing strategic and operational leadership for community health, behavioral health, ethics, spiritual care, diversity, mission and global health. In these roles, he established innovative programs using community health advocates, behavioral health navigators, and hospital housing partnerships to improve health care outcomes and reduce healthcare costs. Mr. Corbett has lectured at Harvard in Clinical Bioethics Courses and at the Maine School of Law and has been published in numerous books and journals. Mr Corbett received his B.S. in International Relations from Syracuse University, a Juris Doctor from St. Johns University and a Master of Divinity from Duke University. John Cowden, MD, MPH Medical Director, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Office of Equity and Diversity, Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics Dr. Cowden is a general pediatrician at Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics, where he serves as Medical Director of the Office of Equity and Diversity. He is founder and co-director of CHICOS, a Spanish language training program for bilingual pediatric residents, and Enlaces, a resident medical Spanish course. He also is Medical Director of a series of interpreter education courses in medical Spanish. Dr. Cowden s research and quality improvement interests include provider-patient communication, provider bias, and access to health care for minorities, specifically those who do not speak English. Andrea Crowley, MBA Senior Manager, Business Services Team, Admitting and Registration Services Department, Massachusetts General Hospital Andrea Crowley is the Senior Manager of the Business Services Division in the Admitting and Registration Services department at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). In her role, Ms. Crowley leads a team that facilitates a variety of departmental and interdepartmental process improvement, systems management, training, and quality assurance projects that support the MGH and Partners Health System front-to-back financial, clinical, and technical initiatives. Her team has played a key role in the implementation of the collection of race, ethnicity, language, education, and disabilities data. This work included process design, system build and testing, comprehensive training development, and quality assurance. Ms. Crowley received her BA from 11

13 Lafayette College and her MBA with a concentration in Healthcare Administration from Providence College. Kirk Dabney, MD, MHCDS Co-Director Cerebral Palsy Program, Clinical Director, Office of Health Equity and Inclusion, Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children Dr. Kirk Dabney specializes in the orthopaedic care of children with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular diseases, and children with orthopaedic manifestations of hematologic disorders (sickle cell disease and hemophilia). Dr. Dabney co-directs the Cerebral Palsy Division/program, which is one of the largest in the country. He is an active member of the Strategic Management committee and is the physician leader for diversity and cultural competency at AIDHC and is responsible for the Vision and Strategy for Nemours Office of Health Equity and Inclusion. Stephanie Gee, MA Senior Project Manager, Research and Evaluation As an applied researcher and evaluator, Stephanie has focused on issues of social inequality, health equity, sexuality, and violence against women. She is currently employed at The Hospital for Sick Children as the Senior Project Manager, Research and Evaluation for the Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Child and Family-Centred Care. In this position, she has led innovative projects aimed at improving cultural competence and health equity at both the organizational and system-level, and has engaged in projects the promote the provision of child and family-centred care. Alexander R. Green, MD, MPH Associate Director, The Disparities Solutions Center, Senior Scientist, Mongan Institute for Health Policy, Arnold P. Gold Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard and Co-chair, Cross Cultural Care Committee, Harvard Medical School Alexander Green is the Associate Director of the Disparities Solutions Center and Senior Scientist at the Mongan Institute for Health Policy at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is also an Associate Professor and Chair of the Cross- Cultural Care Committee at Harvard Medical School. His work focuses on programs designed to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in care, including the use of culturally competent quality improvement interventions, leadership development, and dissemination strategies. He has studied the role of unconscious biases and their impact on clinical decision-making, language barriers and patient satisfaction, and innovative approaches to cross-cultural medical education. He has also served on several national panels on disparities and cultural competency including the Joint Commission's "Hospitals, Language, and Culture" project. In July of 2013, he was awarded The Arnold P. Gold Foundation Professorship for humanism in medicine. 12

14 Brian Hermanspan Vice President, Business Development, Health Leads Brian comes to Health Leads with over 25 years of experience in the healthcare industry, including leadership roles in sales, marketing, and business development. At information technology leaders EMC and Dell, he helped create market leadership positions in information storage and technology services. As Vice President of Sales at CyraCom International, the U.S. leader in healthcare language/translator services, he helped implement the company s first sales and new-hire training programs, customer relationship management system, and account planning and pipeline system turning CyraCom into a first-class selling organization named on the Inc. 500 list of fastest-growing private companies in the United States. Brian began his career at Baxter Healthcare Corporation, where he held a variety of positions with increasing levels of responsibility in both the hospital-provider and non-acute care sectors. He has been a board or committee member of several nonprofit organizations, and is a regular volunteer at his church. He is the recipient of many professional awards. Brian has a B.A. in International Relations and Economics from Stonehill College. Suzanne Mitchell, MD, MS Assistant Professor, Family Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine Dr. Mitchell is Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and a board certified family physician and board-eligible palliative and hospice care provider. She is currently a federally funded clinical researcher studying the impact of patient-doctor communication on health disparities, health service utilization and shared decision-making behavior. Dr. Mitchell is a member of the research team on transitions of care and the Project Re-Engineered Discharge (RED) at Boston University with expertise and publications in best practices for reducing avoidable readmission, serving as an invited speaker and educator in this highly relevant field. Dr. Mitchell also has a special interest in the use of novel health technology to enhance patient safety and informed patient choice, with peer reviewed papers on the use of virtual reality and artificial intelligence agents for medical professional and patient education. She is an active member of the teaching faculty at the Boston University School of Medicine and continues to practice inpatient and palliative care in the Boston area. Arie Nettles, PhD, NCSP, HSP Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics; Director, Office of Inclusion and Health Equity, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine; Monroe Carell Jr. Children s Hospital at Vanderbilt Dr. Nettles is associate professor of clinical pediatrics and psychologist for school age children with developmental disabilities and autism in Developmental Medicine at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Monroe Carell Jr. Children s Hospital. Leading the Office of Inclusion and Health Equity (OIHE), a joint effort with Children s Hospital and Department of Pediatrics, Arie works to address and meet the needs of a diverse pediatric population through education and systemic organization. The model for the OIHE earned an award from the Disparities Leadership Program, Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Nettles held joint appointments in the University of Michigan Schools of Education and 13

15 Medicine as an assistant professor and assistant research scientist, and clinical assistant professor respectively. She was assistant professor in school psychology in the College of Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Arie, an American Psychological Association Minority Fellow, earned her doctoral degree in psychology from the George Peabody College at Vanderbilt University. Licensed psychologist in Tennessee and Michigan, she is also a nationally certified school psychologist and registered health service provider. She served as invited faculty at the Salzburg, Austria Global Fellowship on health and education. Currently Arie serves on the Statewide Planning and Policy Council for the State of Tennessee Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Her current research is cultural competency in health care. Anabela Nunes, MBA Director of Medical Interpreter Services, Massachusetts General Hospital Anabela Nunes is the director of Medical Interpreter Services at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). She oversees a complex operation which integrates the delivery of language services in a variety of modalities, face-to-face, telephonic and video using state of the art scheduling system that facilitates the efficient allocation of resources across a large sprawling urban campus. She leads a group of 36 staff medical interpreters and 50 freelance interpreters who provide interpreting services in over 30 languages. During her tenure, Anabela has been part of a number of initiatives to enhance accessibility to and increase utilization of professional medical interpreters through the creation and deployment of I-POPs (Interpreter Phone on Pole) and more recently V-POPs (video medical interpreting). Michael Paasche-Orlow, MD, MA, MPH Associate Professor of Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine Michael Paasche-Orlow MD, MA, MPH is Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Paasche-Orlow is a general internist and a nationally recognized expert in the field of health literacy. Dr. Paasche- Orlow is currently a co-investigator with five funded grants that examine health literacy including two intervention studies evaluating simplified information technologies for behavior change among minority patients with a range of health literacy levels. Dr. Paasche-Orlow is a member of the Project RED research team, a nationally recognized model to re-engineer the process of hospital discharge to improve the safety and efficiency of transitions of care. Dr. Paasche-Orlow s work has brought attention to the role health literacy plays in racial and ethnic disparities, self-care for patients with chronic diseases, end-of life decision-making, and the ethics of research with human subjects. Dr. Paasche-Orlow is the Associate Program Director for the Boston University School of Medicine General Internal Medicine Academic Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program. 14

16 Nancy Rothman, MSN, EdD, RN Independence Foundation Professor of Urban Community Nursing, Temple University Nancy L. Rothman is the Independence Foundation Professor of Urban Community Nursing in the Department of Nursing, College of Health Professions of Temple University, where she serves as Director of Community-based Practices and oversees Temple Health Connection, an academic wellness center. Her research focuses on community defined health risks and prevention/ intervention strategies for underserved populations. She serves as chair of the NNCC Research Committee and is a consultant to the Public Health Management Corporation Nursing Network, a network of four primary care centers. 15
