MASTER COURSE INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE NEW FORMS OF CONTEMPORARY LIVING / 13
IAAD HISTORY,MISSION AND DIDACTIC APPROACH European hub of higher education in design, Istituto d Arte Applicata e Design - IAAD is capable to fulfil the demand of the market for highly qualified designers thanks to its 35 years expertise in design education, its cross curricular approach and its international dimension with its branches in Italy and France. Thanks to the partnership signed in 2012 with the French Écoles de Condé, the group counts on over students, 350 professors, 6 venues - 5 in France in Paris, Lyon, Nancy, Nice, Bordeaux and 1 in Italy. An integrated system offering 10 Bachelor Degrees and 15 Masters ranging from transportation design to fashion and textile design, from restoration of cultural heritage to marketing and management of arts and design. In Italy, in Torino, the new academic year began in the new IAAD premises inside the future Lavazza headquarter, with square meters available for didactic, with spaces for expositions and conferences. numerous IAAD alumni over the course of 35 years. In terms of concepts, projects and style, IAAD's philosophy is to address the great tradition of Italian design, whose cultural and industrial value is recognized all over the world. IAAD was born in 1978 with the objective of offering a new approach to training and education, by analyzing creative professionalisms effectively required by the job market and structuring specific learning paths. IAAD, through the years, has remodeled its educational offers numerous times, and is also doing so today with considerable commitment, addressing an historical moment characterized by deep cultural and socioeconomic transformations. Specifically, technological evolution is quickly redesigning the whole range of "creative jobs". According to IAAD, design is "project culture", a cultural and intellectual process founded on the core idea that in order to create a serious and prepared professional it is mandatory to unite the rigor of academic research with a practical, experimental method based on planning, and typical of advanced professional training. This methodological approach has proven to be the best in creating successful professionals, as demonstrated by the brilliant careers of 2 / 13
INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE NEW FORMS OF CONTEMPORARY LIVING MASTER PROGRAM The Master examines the space designed both in its aesthetic and functional aspects and in those, less obvious, methods of use and symbolic values. It emerges a dual path, starting from the instinct of men to make room, placing its own habitat, investigates the performative value of built, depositary of the fundamental values of the community. Suggestions and theoretical stimuli become the material on which it s possible to develop the project activity focusing all attention on making concrete what elective scope of a designer. 3 / 13
OBJECTIVES AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY Design is experiencing a time of strong momentum and spreading. The rapid evolution of production methods and lifestyles increasingly requires adaptability and innovation. Anticipating and stimulating change has become one of the main drivers of growth and competitive factor of contemporary economies. The traditional disciplinary boundaries are overwhelmed by the need for greater interaction, ability to work in groups and technology transfer. Designers are required to know new tools of representation and sharing of information as well as to improve skills of listening to the needs. However, new opportunities open for designers who are asked to draw on the wealth of traditional knowledge without conditions or obligations formal style. The product of creativity, also applied to a theme as old as the living, can become a software that helps us orient ourselves or an interface to manage a home automation application but in any case it must be time to take advantage of new knowledge to improve the welfare and meet the need for comfort. It seems clear, even from this brief introduction, that the master is not intended only to transfer a pre-established knowledge and consolidated experience as the use of techniques, materials typical of other fields such as literature, chemistry, neurosciences, cinema, computer science. Finally we want to give space to the themes typical of professional practice and management of the project and to the team of employees that the customer, considered part of the quality of work of the designer. In addition to the conscience of the economics of the project, students IAAD must acquire the ability to do marketing of themselves - essential to present and understand their work and their skills. During the course, great importance is given to presentations and design contest: students are encouraged to make presentations of their work and supported to participate in national and international contests: the projects must not only meet the designers, but they must be able to be appreciated and understood by juries of experts and the public. 4 / 13
FACULTY Professionals working in the respective academic subject sectors, who know the main players of the sector and the skills needed to be competitive in the job market, make up IAAD teaching staff. Lecturers will be instrumental in helping students improve and comprehend which aspects of one's professionalism need to be perfected to enter the job market with a lead. VISITING PROFESSORS IAAD believes in the value of cultural and experiential contamination, opening the doors of the university to professionals known nationally and internationally, experts who contribute to the didactic, leading workshops, seminars and lectures. Students will have the unique opportunity to interact with "gurus" of the sector, who will join IAAD faculty as Visiting Professors. MASTER COORDINATOR Federico De Giuli Born in 1966, Federico De Giuli is Architect and deals with architectural design and project management of recovery. He is partner and director of the company DORAPAL Spa that deals in the business of real estate development and restoration. 7 PRELIMINARY MODULE 60 ECTS credits Start: November 2015, 6 months duration (end: April 2016). Language: English Framework: Full time course (active lectures, laboratories and individual studying) with compulsory attendance classes Monday through Friday (some lectures and external didactic activities may take place on Saturday). PRELIMINARY MODULE MAIN THEMES Representation techniques and modeling The ability of a rapid and effective representation of the project, through a freehand sketch, from a model or from a CAD drawing, is crucial to work in a team and communicate with customers. We propose the learning of a complete set of tools for rapid and professional representation of the project idea through graphic schemes, diagrams, representations or analogue models. Priority will be given to open source software targeted to a nimble job sharing a proper comparison with the designer of plants. The courses will focus on the performance characteristics of the plants paying the utmost attention to the welfare of the user. OBTAINING 60 ECTS CREDITS In order to obtain 60 ECTS credits the student is required to develop a project to present during the final stage of the course and to pass a TOEIC language test. The student will also be able to personalize his or her study plan by participating in sector contests, seminars or additional project works in order to obtain the free credits necessary to pass Preliminary. Technology, equipment and materials The interior design can not ignore the knowledge of plant technologies. The contemporary building is intelligent, low-power and secure. To comply with these features the design of plant required is extremely complex. The goal of the course is to convey to designers the knowledge necessary for 7 / 13
MASTER MODULE 60 ECTS credits Start: May 2016, 10 months duration (end: February 2017) Language: English Framework: Full time course (active lectures, laboratories and individual studying) with compulsory attendance classes Monday through Friday (certain lectures and external didactic activities may take place on Saturday). MASTER MODULE MAIN THEMES History and culture of interior design In this area are grouped courses characterizing the second year of the Master aimed at investigating from different points of view the culture and ways of living. The living is not just about residence but it is a right of men to live and interact with the space. Living conceived more than a physical fact is an existential phenomenon, as such, as a narration, takes place in a space and in time. In contemporary society we live in a dispersion of living produced by different lifestyles and new technologies. We will try to reconstruct some routes in cinema, in literature, in memories and we will face different design themes to recognize the renewed semantic and communicative of architectural signs. The courses will be held with lectures, exercises and analysis of built projects. Tools and techniques of design and professional practice. From the needs analysis to the implementation of what was designed, this area of the master belong those courses that deal with techniques and tools ranging from the comparison with the customer to estimate, from procurement to the management of the times and ways of construction. Activities implied in any project activity can be usefully systematized and better articulated to facilitate group work and the rationality of the design and manufacturing process. During the academic year IAAD will organize didactic visits to companies, exhibits and museums, special workshops, meetings with prominent sector professionals (possible costs will be at the student's expense). Thesis Every edition of the Master includes the development of a thesis in collaboration with a company of the sector. The project path starts with a briefing with the company, followed by intermediate presentations and feedback from company referents, and ends with the final discussion of the Thesis. 8 / 13
MAIN SUBJECTS OF THE MASTER PROGRAM History of furniture and interior architecture The typical evolution of the domestic space as a function of the ages and cultures will be the topic of the course. It will analyse the use of materials and the importance of technological innovations in organizing home. Materials The universe of materials is rapidly changing and the professional is required to know in depth the performance of what is used. The acoustic characteristics, insulation, fire resistance, durability, sustainability, maintenance, safety, quality are decisive in the choice of a material. The course will consist of classes of materials such as wood, metal, plastic, stone and marble, ceramics, textiles, and carbon nano-materials. They will also analyse the regulatory aspects (ISO) and the main processing technologies including printing, cutting, gluing. The course will make use of external contributions from companies and manufacturers. Sketch up The course will support the students in acquiring skills for effective use of Sketch up. 3D modeling software versatile, powerful and yet simple to learn and use. It has its strengths in the creation of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional, giving the designer an intuitive and fast, able to assist in terms of graphics and to allow dynamic and creative exploration of objects, materials and impact of the sunlight. Tools and techniques for professional practice The course starting from the needs analysis aims to present techniques to better manage the relationship with the client, analyse in a systematic and rational needs and translate them into project objectives. Finally, we will introduce some of the principles of project management and cost control with the use of professional software project management and budgeting. Use of social networks and web based office tools Social networks and online programs offer effective support to team-working, allowing the sharing of multimedia and professional promotion. Packages of tools will be: Access and Sharepoint, the Google suite, doodle, Prezi, different social networks. Revit BIM Revit is a program that allows the design with elements of parametric modelling and design. The course will focus on the functions typical of BIM linking the graphic elements of the project design information with different formats but useful to manage the project and its maintenance manual. These techniques are increasingly used but which is not yet widespread knowledge and potential. Rendering Using software for fast rendering of 3D models from Revit and Sketch up. Light management, movies and creating texture. Introduction to the techniques of animation. 9 / 13
Arduino and 3D printing Introduction to the internet of things, use of Arduino to build simple interfaces. Using software and 3D printers for prototyping and small series production. Principles of lighting and energy saving The course takes place in the Preliminary Module, involves the use of software for calculating luminance and introduces the choice of fixtures and their management. It is a course essentially technical preparatory course design of the light to be held in the Master Module. Meta-design The interior space, intended for use predominantly residential or dedicated to other activities, is a place of extraordinary complexity. Capacitor of memories, values and feelings, the domestic domain is physically identified by a succession of appearances materials - fixed or mobile - with which individuals come into direct relationship. Starting from a reflection on the extraordinary experiences produced by some great Italian masters in the years of the affirmation of the "modern", the course aims to reflect on the knowledge base necessary to interior design practice contemporaries. Project-work The project-work will be dedicated to the realization of a lighting project and provide an opportunity to actually implement what students have learned in the Preliminary Module, from the representation techniques to the design methodology, principles of lighting to the ability to think about the space in different lighting conditions. Cinema and architecture Cinema and architecture are two arts immersive, multisensory and collective, have the strength to stimulate empathic-shared reactions that condition deeply and unconsciously. The relationship between film and architecture will be investigated in different directions such as: set design; architecture and the city in the cinema; the use of the moving image in the design, with particular attention to the application in places for entertainment and in the museums. Light and space The control of natural or artificial light is an issue often overlooked by designers. Light design requires technical knowledge and sensitivity and can be a tool for the success of a job. The technology of light is one of the areas in the fastest transformation and is instrumental in reducing consumption, which requires a constant updating of professionals. The spatiality of vision is strongly influenced by light and because the functional space is only part of what we perceive, it is essential to know how to program the light. Laboratory of literary architecture In architecture, one has to do with problems such ideas to transmit, a structure that the underpinning all, sequences of spaces, functions, and so on. Writing and literature, the issues are similar. The course aims to design and build a model of an architecture whose structure is based on a literary work. It will analyse the text, it will create a program, it will help to outline a narrative structure and finalize all the architectural project. To accompany the final plastic, there will be a text in which the entire route will be told and explained. The space of memory The space in which we live is, even before a rational language level, the land of development and recognition of the self from the early stages of our lives. Objects, volumes, lights affect us not only on the functional and symbolic but still before the unconscious. The course objective is to investigate the mechanisms of aesthetic experience, starting from the stadium more subjective to try to reconstruct the processes that lead to the creation of a shared judgment. The course will have a seminar and will be oriented to the performance of design themes. Living the web The contemporary identity is widely dispersed between the physical world and the virtual, home, as a place of our self-representation, competes with the network so you can say that somehow inhabit the virtual space of social media. Home automation defines the quality of air, light, and temperature, mediating our relationship with nature in an active way. Gradually we become part of a world in 10 / 13
which technology affects the relationship with the senses and physicality. The course will address issues such as the relationship between public and private space in terms of a new and different concept of privacy. The piece of furniture Techniques and materials for the design of the piece of furniture. The course will make use of the collaboration of some of the major production companies and publishing of items of furniture. In addition to the technical aspects of construction, it will be considered the entire chain of production, communication, marketing, consumption and recycling. efficient allocation of resources. The urban struggle to find different tools by zoning and standards for planning growth reproducing city models designed for the industrial city and today unsustainable from all points of view. The dense city, with a balanced mix of functions, represents a contemporary response that also opens to new forms and functions of living in an alternation between Lowtech and technology. Workshop The main disciplines of the Master Module will be addressed, in addition to the regular courses through workshops taught by visiting professors. The garden The theme, of course outdoor, it is useful to clarify that the space to live is not strictly internal to a building. The course will touch on the topic of green inside the home, from plants in an apartment to home gardens and indoor plants. The Art of Gardens exemplifies clearly how human action, even where it works on the nature, aims to make habitable spaces otherwise fallow and hostile. Live viral In much of the world's cities grow spontaneously and not regulated under the pressure uncontrollable urbanization of millions of people; our cities, on the contrary suffer from over-regulation that limits the flexibility and more JOBPLACEMENT SERVICE In order to allow students to have access to the best opportunities in the creative professional job market, IAAD oversees contacts between students and the professional world, promoting their graduates and master graduates with the main players in the market. Thanks to a relation network with the reference environment, IAAD possess a regularly updated company database. These companies are in constant contact for the selection of young talent to place in their structures. 11 / 13
