Presentation Committed to our history Joseba Jauregizar. Managing Director of Tecnalia Corporación Tecnológica Events such as the birth of AUKERA, a pioneering Spanish initiative aimed at supporting businesses to implement and develop new R+D+i projects. Events such as the annual Six Countries Programme (6CP) meeting held at the Technological Park, with the presence of researchers, business leaders, university professors and experts in the innovation field, who came to debate the latest trends in innovation policies, or events such as the inauguration of Nobatek - the new technological centre for sustainable building in France. All these events show that Tecnalia s commitment to research, business and, as a result, society is as firm today as it ever was. As is the case every year, we are pleased to present our containing some of the landmark events that stood out in
Presentation Times are changing Aitor Urbistondo, Amaia Alberdi, Eneritz Zamayoa, Hector Marín and David Ramos We at Tecnalia know that people are the ones who endow innovation processes with real value and our organisation has always been firmly committed to encouraging their creativity by creating a working environment that allows them to give their very best. We have also had a very close relationship with all the players involved in innovation. That s because we know that, if we are to be more competitive and obtain better results, then we need to promote the links demanded by research by establishing global strategies and alliances. If the present economic situation has had one benefit, it has been to open the eyes of those who still doubted the role of innovation as the essential driving force for development and the generation of value for both business and society as a whole. 04

A team totally committed to making a success of the most ambitious scientific-technological projects carried out by the different Business Units. In 2009 we saw how many of the needs of our clients required multidisciplinary teams to find the best solutions. The following projects are a sample of the most outstanding, whether for their functionality, level of execution or unique nature. The best of the best 20
Science for the palate When cutting-edge gastronomy becomes science High lights A relaxing coffee Creativity and innovation in top-level gastronomy go hand in hand with scientific and technological knowledge for application to culinary processes and the development of new products for the foodstuffs industry. This collaboration between science, technology and gastronomy can be seen in the projects developed jointly by the Tecnalia Foodstuffs Unit, the Mugaritz and Akelarre restaurants and the domestic appliance company De Dietrich. Tecnalia has also become a board member of the Basque Culinary Centre (BCC). The Corporation provides the project with its scientific know-how in foodstuffs research, as well as offering the Foundation, amongst others, a classroom for training activities, a pilot plant to reproduce foodstuff processes on a pre-industrial scale, microstructure and sensory analysis laboratories and an experimental centre fully equipped to develop new culinary technologies. Scientists from the Tecnalia Foodstuffs unit will also teach and carry out research at the Faculty of Gastronomic Sciences and take part in designing the fields of research that the Gastronomic Sciences Research and Innovation Centre will develop. The collaboration between businesses and technological centres has once again borne fruit. This time it is an R+D+i project carried out by Café Fortaleza and the Tecnalia Foodstuffs Unit that has led to the development of an innovative decaffeinated coffee with lime blossom and lemon balm. The coffee makers asked the technological centre to take charge of the technological development of the product, which is now on the market. 21
Safety on rails Systems and materials for increasing train safety High lights The technology that came from space During 2009, the Tecnalia Aerospace Unit continued to coordinate and manage the ESA Space Technology Transfer programme, aimed at facilitating the use of space technology and systems in non-space sectors. The Programme includes several promotion and dissemination activities, especially interesting being the two Conferences organised by Tecnalia: Making it vital to guarantee its safety in the broadest possible sense. Recent years has seen increased interest in the need to research and progress in developing passive protection materials and systems for passenger transport infrastructures (rail and underground), largely due to the many and varied incidents affecting them, ranging from fortuitous accidents to accidental derailments and other incidents caused intentionally. In this context, the European Union has implemented several research projects aimed at increasing the safety of public transport by rail. The SECUREMETRO project is one of these, part of the surface transport call in the 7th Framework Programme, with a major contribution from the Tecnalia Aerospace Unit, as well as from Newcastle University as project leaders and other technological centres in France, Italy and Spain, the multinational Bombardier, the railways section of the Sunsundegui group, the Warsaw Metro (Poland) and RATP, the organisation responsible for the metropolitan area of Paris. In December 2009, Tecnalia organised a Conference to present the latest trends in agricultural innovation to the agricultural sector. These included the possibility of adapting technology from applications initially developed for the space sector. In September 2009, we organised a conference together with the CDTI to present the opportunities offered by the ESA with regard to technology transfer and offer several Spanish space companies and other entities the chance to present their experiences of successfully transferring technology to other sectors. continues 22
Safety on rails Systems and materials for increasing train safety In the project, Tecnalia, through the transfer of aerospace technology to the Safety sector, is working on the design, selection, manufacture and development of systems for protection against explosions and fire. It is also responsible for designing the validation experiments, including all the instrumentation for analysing the results. Researchers from the Corporation are using advanced high performance solutions, foam metal manufacturing methods and systems for joining the different materials making the protection system. The primary aim of the project is to develop and validate design and materials selection strategies for the manufacture of train and underground coaches and cars that will thus incorporate intrinsic safety features for protecting them from explosions and fires. 23
The city moves A project researching the sustainable electrification of urban transport High lights Comprehensive Benchmarking In December 2009, the Tecnalia Automotive Unit and the AIC-Automotive Intelligence Centre, together with the French company Mavel and the ACICAE-Automotive Cluster of Euskadi, organised the first comprehensive benchmarking of electric vehicles at national level, where the two main vehicles of this type on sale were completely dismantled: the Toyota `Prius III and the Honda `Insight. The project will look at solutions for the electrification of light urban vehicles, increasing the flexibility of transport and minimising environmental impact. The idea is not just to become pioneering researchers into electrification and the new paradigms of urban transport, but also to develop a project that generates a real fleet of zero-emission vehicles and their associated electrical infrastructure, demonstrating the validity of the concept in real urban driving scenarios by means of large-scale trials. Tecnalia seeks to become more closely involved in identifying and sharing the trends and evolution of hybrid vehicles, their projection in different types and their advantages over diesel vehicles, while collaborating with decision making processes concerning positioning in this market. Tecnalia is joined by 31 partners to head the CITYELEC Unique Strategic Project to research solutions to the electrification of vehicles. CITYELEC is a Unique Strategic Project funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation within the framework of the national Public-Private Cooperation Programme of the National Plan for Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation It aims to find solutions to allow the appearance of new mobility systems for people and goods in the urban environment efficiently and cleanly. The Conference took place at the AIC headquarters in the Amorebieta-Etxano Business Park and was the first of its type at national level, bringing together leading international experts in the field and generating a new and different learning model used to observe, touch and take detailed photographs of all elements making up the hybrid vehicles in order to facilitate future technological developments. continues 24
The project concentrates on the urban environment, ideal for introducing electrification for transport, as it has specific qualities that will benefit enormously from pure electric traction (zero pollution, low noise pollution, etc.). The project will also research groundbreaking concepts designed to introduce electrification in the urban environment optimally and rationally, with sustainable mobility as the goal. This research work will place Spain as one of the leaders in the implantation and validation of a global, integrating solution for urban transport based on purely electrical vehicles, allowing different vehicles to be used for road transport (quads, motorcycles and minibuses). It will also be a leader as regards the boost given to initiatives that lead to the generation of a new fabric of business relationships and knowledge, something necessary to promote the new industry that will supply the production of the new electric vehicles. Thanks to the project, a large number of research companies, entities and bodies will collaborate towards a common goal in a field of major relevance that has great prospects for the future. The city moves A project researching the sustainable electrification of urban transport 25
From oil to eco-efficiency A new polytechnic campus in Bahrain High lights Restoring neighbourhoods and buildings around the world Last June and July, the Tecnalia Building Unit, with the support of the Energy and Innovation Systems units, worked on designing the campus for the new Bahrain Polytechnic University, as part of a tender process restricted to 10 participants. Tecnalia focused on designing the climate control strategies for outdoor areas of the campus (areas for transit and meetings between buildings, beneath a large marquee supported by wind towers equipped with evaporative cooling systems), as well as studying energy generation and energy efficiency scenarios for the building work. The work carried out over the two months culminated in two project presentations held in Bahrain, the last being made to Prince Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, who showed his interest in our proposal. The creation of the Bahrain Polytechnic University is designed to sow the seeds of change in this part of the Persian Gulf, from an oil-based economy to one based on innovation and knowledge. The year saw the development of projects for building heritage restoration and valorisation both in Spain and abroad, in such countries as Ecuador, Uruguay, Brazil and Cuba. We were also invited to make a presentation at the United Nations event entitled Territory, Decentralised Cooperation and New Active Multilateralism held in Seville on November 24th and 25th 2009, where we described the Tecnalia Building Unit methodology for international cooperation projects. The commitment of the Building Unit to restoration has been significantly consolidated in 2009 with several international projects and the organisation of the III Rehabend 09 International Conference (29th and 30th October) in Bilbao, where experts from all over the world met to discuss and present their results and innovations in the field of restoration and building management technologies. continues 26
From oil to eco-efficiency A new polytechnic campus in Bahrain The Tecnalia Building Unit was also designated by the Ministry of Industry to represent Spain in the International Energy Association s energy efficiency in building programme (Energy Conservation in Buildings and Community Systems). This milestone confirms the Corporation s leadership in the development and implementation sustainable and eco-efficient architectural and building technologies. We should also point out that the Unit is a leading player in several Spanish and European energy efficiency (JTI-E2BA) and building (ECTP) platforms. The other members of the project team are Acciona I+D, Typsa, Grupo JG, the American landscaper Margie Ruddick and the local team Akbari Architects, all coordinated by the architect Enric RuizGeli from the CLOUD9 studio in Barcelona and the designer of the architectural project. 27
The electricity networks of the future Supplying new electricity needs, efficiently, reliably and sustainably High lights 3rd international conference on marine engineering Tecnalia and the EVE organised the 3rd International Conference on Marine Engineering. The conference took place at the Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC) in April, with the participation of the leading international experts from the sector. The conference covered the main advances in marine energy devices, as well as other aspects that were non-technological but nonetheless vital for the development and introduction of this new source into the energy system. The REDES 2025 project has a budget of 40 million Euros and is part funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation as a Unique Strategic Project, meaning that it is the first of the R+D+i initiatives promoted by the Spanish electricity networks technological platform FUTURED and is a significant milestone as a joint initiative that combines the strengths of the Spanish electricity sector. This 4-year project is led by Red Eléctrica de España, Endesa, HidroCantábrico, Iberdrola and Gas Natural-Unión Fenosa, with Tecnalia as the overall coordinator. Other participants in the project include 25 equipment manufacturers and engineering companies, 6 technological centres and 9 universities and public research bodies, creating a consortium with 45 partners. The philosophy of the project is that of FUTURED to progressively design and develop the electricity network of 2025, ensuring that it is able to guarantee the electricity needs of all users efficiently, reliably and sustainably. The conference was divided into 5 sessions that deal with the following topics: overall situation of marine energy, technologies and non-technological aspects of marine energy, testing and demonstration of technologies and offshore installation and operation technologies. Other related events included: the meeting of the European WAVEPLAM project on non-technological barriers to the development of wave energy in Europe and the seminar on harmonisation of the development of marine energy capture devices in the framework of the European EQUIMAR project. The initiative was possible thanks to the meetings held in Bilbao by the members of the International Energy Agency (IEA-OES). continues 28
In this context, the REDES 2025 project specifically aims to design, specify and develop technological solutions that make it possible for this vision to come true by developing both applications based on power electronics, energy storage and superconductivity and also tools for integrating distributed energy resources in the network and for managing information in the future electricity network. The electricity networks of the future Supplying new electricity needs, efficiently, reliably and sustainably 29
Controlled heat Industrial validation of the thermal plasma heating unit High lights Ecological casting furnaces The Tecnalia Foundry Unit is heading and coordinating the EDEFU project funded by 7th Framework Programme with a budget of 8.4 Million. The project aims to build scale prototypes to research, develop and validate, new heating technologies, develop new materials to improve thermal insulations, new efficient and innovative designs and systems for recovery of the waste generated by manufacturing processes. This objective supports CO2 atmospheric emissions reduction policies. One of the most important stages in the manufacturing process of moulded part iron foundries is the casting, this being the pouring of liquid metal into a mould to create the parts. In 2007, the Tecnalia Foundry Unit gave an exclusive license to SERT-Metal (France) for heating and temperature control of casting based on a plasma torch, having previously shown that it did not have an adverse effect on the quality of the cast parts and confirmed the expected operational advantages. Industrial validation of the thermal plasma heating unit took place in Since the introduction of casting furnaces in the 1980s, progress has been made in terms of safety and significant improvements have been made to the materials used, control electronics have been incorporated to a large degree, but no substantial improvement has been made to the casting systems themselves, meaning that the incorporation of the system for heating and temperature control of casting based on the plasma torch patented by Tecnalia is probably the most significant innovation at operational level. The European Commission has invited Tecnalia to present the project at the first China-European Union workshop on clean technologies to be held in Beijing next March. As well as Tecnalia, the project has the support of 16 organisations, most furnace manufacturers, heating system suppliers, refractory material suppliers and centres and universities in Germany, France, Belgium, The United Kingdom, Poland and Lithuania. continues 30
Up to now, due to the uncertainty existing concerning the metallurgical quality existing as a result of applying an electric arc to a carbon steel alloy, thermal plasma had not been introduced to the foundry sector and now, thanks to the work carried out by the Tecnalia Foundry Unit, this uncertainty has disappeared, showing that the plasma arc not only allows the metal to be heated effectively, automatically and precisely (+/- 3º for a preset temperature), but also offers significant metallurgical advantage and can be highly beneficial for the metallurgical quality of the molten bath in controlled conditions. Controlled heat Industrial validation of the thermal plasma heating unit 31
Who knows about what? Tecnalia proposes organising the knowledge of organisations to achieve optimum results High lights Developing the European RFID market People in all organisations ask questions like: Who knows what? What does an organisation know about this topic or that?, What s the best workgroup for the project we re undertaking?, etc. In recent years, the Tecnalia Infotech Unit has been researching how to deal with managing organisational knowledge and this research has led to the ACK (Accessing Corporate Knowledge) product it uses for its own internal systems and is marketing it to those companies and institutions who request it. Bearing in mind the fact that not all organisations use knowledge in the same way, ACK is based on scenarios, meaning that it is very flexible and adapts quickly to the specific needs and characteristics of each business process (logistics, manufacture, engineering, R+D, after-sales services, etc). ACK is based on cutting-edge intelligent information management technologies, a major advance on the traditional tools used up to now. It combines different sources of information, both structured (ERP, CRM, etc.) and non-structured (text documents, images, web 2.0, blogs and wikis), to obtain the knowledge available by bringing them all together. ACK offers advanced search options for multiple information sources such as those mentioned above, searches based on meaning and not matching words, something that allows us to identify the most burning topics in an organisation at a glance and answer the questions we asked at the beginning. continues The Tecnalia Infotech Unit is the only Spanish participant in the European RACE network RFID thematic network, which aims to promote the use of RFID in Europe and raise it to the levels of use seen in the USA, Japan and Korea. Tecnalia is supporting the EC with aspects related to the privacy directive dealing with the use of RFID, development of the Internet of Things and the identification of the Lighthouse Project between the USA and Europe in this field. 32
ACK also integrates with business management systems and Web 2.0 applications. For example, it can be complemented with a number of semantic wikis that allow innovation and project management to be carried out in collaboration and integrated with resources from different sources: technology watch services, bids, etc., as well as with all other information already existing in the organisation, even when it is distributed. ACK adapts to the current business and future modifications of the same without having to develop and implant new modules. Who knows about what? Tecnalia proposes organising the knowledge of organisations to achieve optimum results 33
Latex Made in Europe We are seeking alternatives to the Asian monopoly of natural latex production High lights Humanising the farm The new industrial premises built at the Arkaute centre have been designed for carrying out research projects focusing on poultry behaviour, health, production and welfare. The studies carried out will allow the poultry sector to be better prepared to satisfy new European regulations concerning production and welfare. The premises have been designed to allow us to work with all kinds of species in both intensive and extensive systems, as they have access to parks covering 2,800m2 around the main premises and a 320m2 experimental unit with a computerised environmental control system. All the natural latex used in Europe is imported and is largely extracted from the Hevea brasiliensis tree. The leading producers are Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, who have a practical monopoly of this resource. In order to find alternatives to the commercial dependency and promote the cultivation of latex producing plants in the Old Continent, the European union, as part of the 7th Framework Programme, is carrying out a research project in which the Tecnalia Agricultural Innovation Unit is taking part. The project is made up of 11 technological centres, universities and companies from eight countries and studies the potential of two species: Guayule (Parthenium argentatum ) and Russian Dandelion (Taraxacum kok-saghyz). We are looking into selecting and obtaining new germplasm from the two species producing natural latex, their biochemistry and molecular genetics, traditional genetic improvement by crossing, agronomy and the acquisition of specific products using their rubber. Genetic study of the two plants will allow us to generate specimens that produce more latex and are commercially viable. continues Certain natural latexes are the main ingredient for the extraction of natural rubber. Although most rubber is synthetic, the natural variety is an essential raw material for all kinds of industries and vital for the manufacture of surgical gloves, condoms and high quality tyres. The increased demand for natural rubber in the emerging countries has led to its price doubling in the last two years. 34
The world production of natural rubber, largely associated with the Hevea brasiliensis tree, faces a number of threats. The rubber tree is very vulnerable to pests and illnesses and it is grown in areas with a highly specific climate, mainly in tropical areas of Asia and South America. Another fundamental problem with the rubber extracted from the tree is the allergy to latex it can cause, something that would be avoided with latex from Guayule or Russian Dandelion. Latex Made in Europe We are seeking alternatives to the Asian monopoly of natural latex production 35
Efficient vessels A system for measuring and managing the fuel consumption of boats High lights We know what you did last winter The rising price of fuel and its impact on the fishing sector has led the Tecnalia Marine Research Unit to take a number of initiatives designed to minimise the impact of high energy prices by improving the energy performance of the fishing fleet. To this end, we have developed a prototype fuel consumption measurement system for fishing vessels that has undergone trials with the commercial fishing fleet specialising in Inshore Trolling, Inshore Live Bait Purse Seining and High-sea Trawling and will be rolled out for the whole fleet during This hardware/software package has two flow meters, one at the main engine fuel inlet and another at the outlet. The system is tailored to each vessel and allows the captain/system user to instantly identify realtime fuel consumption and accumulated consumption by means of the control unit on the bridge. The system also calculates consumption for different engine operating regimes. Depending on the operation of the vessel and, especially, the part played by the course navigated, significant savings in diesel consumption can be made by small changes in engine regime that have a minor effect on the operating capacity of the fishing vessel. Red tuna can dive over 1,000 metres in search of other species to eat, a figure obtained by means of an electronic device attached to a fish by the Tecnalia Marine Research unit. Recovery of said device allowed us to discover that the fish migrated as far as the Azores and the Portuguese coast, where it overwintered, before returning to the Bay of Biscay in spring. 36
H2O and nothing else An innovative system for eliminating emerging pollutants from water using nanotechnologies High lights Portable silence The long experience of the Tecnalia Environmental Unit in the strategic management of sound quality and its recent efforts researching innovative solutions to mitigate acoustic impact in urban environments has led to a new product: a reusable, portable acoustic screen, for which a patent has already been applied for. One of the challenges to improving water quality in the 21st century is to control the presence of the so-called emerging pollutants, a very varied set off substances that are all found in low concentrations in the medium, are difficult to degrade with conventional technologies and the small concentrations needed to cause significant damage to human health and ecosystems. This group of substances includes remains of pesticides, antibiotics, hormones and cosmetics. Using nanomaterials can improve such processes as selectivity, robustness, stability and performance, while reducing energy requirements and the generation of by-products. Given the obvious need for specific solutions, other systems designed to resolve this problem have been identified. However, the patent applied for refers to a product that overcomes the drawbacks of the state of the art. The Tecnalia Environmental Unit is developing two of the most important nanotechnologies solar photocatalysis using titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles and the development of new absorbents using nanometric diameter fibres. The removal of pollutants from water by using heterogeneous catalysis with TiO2 as the catalyst has the advantage of being a non-selective technique that destroys practically all organic pollutants (including most emerging pollutants) by using UV light. The synthesis of nanofibres from different materials opens up an important research route in the environmental field regarding new continues Temporary, although frequently occurring, noise sources in our towns and cities (such as building and demolition work and events attracting large audiences) are a major nuisance. Until now there was no effective answer adapted to specific needs. It involves incorporating specific requirements to screening systems: the ability to install and remove them quickly and the option of using them in varying scenarios. 37
adsorption technologies that are ever more effective and selective, thanks to the increased adsorption surface obtained by reducing the diameter of the fibres. The possibilities of functionalising the nanofibres and manufacturing them from a wide range of materials means that the number of pollutants that can be treated is increased. The project aims to develop and implement methods that use these technologies or a combination of the two and are able to increase the efficiency of current technologies, reducing water pollution below the quality standards required, particularly regarding those substances regarded as a priority. H2O and nothing else An innovative system for eliminating emerging pollutants from water using nanotechnologies 38
Ready for the change Developing measures for adapting to climate change and dealing with its effects High lights living soils Climate change is one of the most disheartening environmental problems facing mankind today. However, the effects will vary from region to region and terrestrial ecosystems will be most affected by the change.adaptation to climate change has been recognised as a priority with regard to actions taken at international, European, country and regional levels, due to the extreme vulnerability of different regions of the world to the effects of climate change. The main aim of the Kegokitzen and Adaptaclima projects is to promote measures for adapting to the risks associated with climate change in such activities as agriculture and natural resources. The project also seeks to raise social awareness: to make citizens aware of the real consequences of climate change. This will allow us to soften the impact of the same in both the economic and social areas. valuing different geographical locations and timescales, in order to provide useful information when designing strategies for the usage, planning and management of territories. The main results expected are as follows: The project includes drawing up plans for adapting to climate change that take into account the integration of different sectors and systems, - A joint environmental management strategy that can be extended to other territories in the South West Europe space. - A high-resolution climate prediction system. - Regional climate models. - In-depth studies of the possible consequences of climate change on infrastructures and buildings. - Local directives designed to focus on adaptation to the consequences of climate change. Specialists in soil microbiology from the Tecnalia Environment and Natural Resources Unit have formed a group to study the microbial properties of soil as biomonitoring tools for evaluating the deterioration or improvement of soil health resulting from different practices. The recovery of quarries and agricultural soils are two of the priorities of the group. 39
Cells with good eyesight Personalised ophthalmology through research into new therapies based on cell systems High lights Biomimetic osseous structure The development of new materials for implants and osseous replacement aims to mimetise bone structure. The Tecnalia Health Unit is developing a whole new generation of porous foams based on metallic, ceramic and polymer materials whose mechanical properties and porosity allow bone structure to be biomimetised and achieve enhanced osseointegration. The Tecnalia Health Unit and Oculab, led by VISSUM Ophthalmologic Corporation, are the driving force behind the most ambitious Ophthalmologic research project in recent decades. In order to carry out the Project, a business consortium made up of medical bodies, pharmaceutical companies and other spanish companies in the sector, representing the whole range of activities associated with personalised Ophthalmology. It includes companies researching and developing therapeutic substrates, as well as researching and developing active ingredients and methods for the diagnosis and research of new therapies based on cell systems. The 12 members of the consortium are: VISSUM Ophthalmologic Corporation as project leader, BTI ImasD, AJL Ophtalmics, Bioftalmik, INDO, TSF-Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, IOFV (Fernández Vega Ophthalmologic Institute), Biolan, FAES FARMA, ROVI Pharmaceutical Laboratories, Sylentis and Progenika Biopharma. The project also enjoys the collaboration of 20 Public Research Centres and Bodies and 14 subcontracted companies. New bioresistant and biodegradable foams have been developed to aid bone repair and regeneration with a bioactive behaviour able to activate osseointegration cells, with mechanical and structural properties similar to those of healthy bone and able to reconstruct large bone defects. We have also developed implantable biomaterials with controlled porosity and biomimetic mechanical properties by using titanium microspheres, using powder metallurgy and rapid prototyping technologies, as well as implantable components coated with thin layers of porous metal that allow bone to regenerate so that it adheres firmly to the prosthesis. continues 40
