1 MICROSCOPY MARKETING GUIDE This guide contains marketing and competitive information comparing the Aven Microscope Line to the following products: 1. Scienscope 2. Luxo Note: This guide is accurate to the best of Aven s knowledge. This guide is written for the exclusive use of Aven personnel and field sales force only. This guide is not to be distributed or shared with any person or persons not affiliated with Aven without the written approval of Aven Inc.
2 Microscopy Basics Key Terms: 1. Working Distance: The working distance is from the bottom of the microscope to the viewing surface when properly focused. The ONLY thing that changes the working distance of a microscope is the auxiliary lens that screws onto the bottom of the microscope. 2. Magnification: The magnification is the multiplication of all lenses. There are 3 numbers involved: eyepiece power, zoom power of the body and auxiliary lens power. Example: For a microscope with 10X Eyepiece, Zoom Value of 1.5 (As shown on the zoom knob scale) and a.5x auxiliary lens. Magnification: 10 x 1.5 x 0.5 = 7.5x If you want to change the overall magnification without changing the working distance, you must either change the zoom knob setting or the eyepieces. REMEMBER: Changing the Auxiliary Lens will always change the working distance. 3. Field of View (FOV): The working diameter you can see through the microscope. Dependent on magnification, lower the magnification the larger the field of view and vice-versa. HOW TO SELECT THE CORRECT AVEN MICROSCOPE When selecting a microscope you need to know at least 2 of the 3 following items: 1. Magnification Range 2. Minimum Working Distance 3. Field of View Range From this data you can use the tables to find the scope body, eyepieces and aux. lens required to meet your requirements.

4 HOW TO READ THE OPTICAL DATA CHART OPTICAL DATA FOR DSZ-70 / DSZT-70 (1) (2) Eyepiece (2) DSW15X (F.N. 15) (2) DSW20X (F.N. 11.4) Auxiliary Lens (3) Nil w/0.5x w/0.75x w/1.6x Nil w/0.5x w/0.75x w/1.6x Magnifications 30x-105x 15x-52.5x 22.5x x 48x-168x 40x-140x 20x-70x 30x-105x 64x-224x Working Distance 80mm 120mm 85mm 41mm 80mm 120mm 85mm 41mm Field of View mm mm mm mm mm mm mm 3.5-1mm Section (1) Type This section shows the microscope body type. With the Aven line you have 3 choices in either binocular or tri-nocular. DSZ/DSZT-44, DSZ/DSZT-70 or SPZ/SPZT-50. Section (2) Eyepiece Magnification This section shows the selected eyepieces. Depending on the body type selected different eyepieces are available from 5x to 20x. The standard eyepieces that come with each body type is 10x. That is the eyepiece standard used to rate the scopes magnification range. So when we say the scope has a nominal magnification range of 20x-70x, we assume that is with 10x eyepieces and no auxiliary lens. Remember: Changing the eyepieces changes only the magnification range and not the working distance. Section (3) Auxiliary Lens This section shows the aux lens selected. The Aux lens is used to change the working distance of the scope. It also changes the magnification range as well. An Aux lens less than 1 increases the working distance, and aux lens greater than 1 reduces the working distance. EXAMPLE: A customer needs a microscope with a minimum working distance of 100mm and a magnification range from 3x-8x. What scope and accessories would we recommend? Answer: Looking at the charts we can see the DSZ/DSZT-44 with a.5x aux lens and 5x eyepieces will fit the specification: OPTICAL DATA FOR DSZ-44 / DSZT-44 Eyepiece DSW5X (F.N. 22.5) DSW10X (F.N. 23) Auxiliary Lens Nil w/0.5x w/0.75x w/1.6x Nil w/0.5x w/0.75x w/1.6x Magnifications 5x-22x 2.5x-11x 3.75x- 16.5x 8x-35.2x 10x-44x 5x-22x 7.5x-33x 16x-70.4x Working Distance 90mm 150mm 105mm 45mm 90mm 150mm 105mm 45mm Field of View mm mm mm mm mm mm mm mm
5 The Aven Advantage: What sets an Aven Micoscope apart from its Chinese competitors? One word: Quality. Aven imports its microscopes from Carton Optical of Japan. Unlike its Chinese competitors, Carton has had over 30 years of experience in the microscope industry. Below are just a few of the differences in quality that make an Aven microscope superior: Aven microscopes utilize optical resolution glass, most Chinese scopes do not. Chinese factories are constantly changing their design and do not make spare parts. So, if you need to repair a scope from China that is over 6 months old, chances are spare parts will not be available. That is not the case with an Aven scope. Carton manufactures to strict tolerances whereas Chinese factories do not. To make up for this variation they use an inexpensive grease not easily available in the US to make up for variations. Once this grease breaks down, the inner workings of the microscope cannot be fixed without remanufacturing its internal workings, which is very costly. Aven offers 3 different microscope bodies. Most of the competitions have one maybe two body types. Stands and Lighting accessories: Aven offers a complete line of stands from the popular PRM stand (unique to Aven) to a full range of boom stands. Only Aven offers a complete lighting range from fluorescent to fiber optic to LED. Create your own system: Unlike the competition that have only packaged systems. Aven understands that each application is unique which is why on the Aven website you can configure and price the right system for the application. Cross Reference Charts Attached are cross reference charts to help you easily find a replacement microscope for either a Scienscope or Luxo product. Given the competitors body, eyepieces and aux lens, it is now easy to find the comparable Aven scope.
