2 How to use the guide This guide is intended to give seafarers useful information on facilities in ports. The guide is divided into main port areas, while smaller ports are described under the port area where they belong. When you know the name of the port or the dock your ship is calling at, please check the index on the last pages of the guide. The guide does not give a complete survey of the area you are visiting. The intention is to give you some basic information, and tell you where to pick up more detailed knowledge about what s on. Calling your home country: Telephone charges in Norway are among the cheapest in the world. When calling to a foreign country dial 00 and then the country code and the telephone number. Public telephone boxes accept 1, 5, 10, 20 kroner coins, or telephone cards that can be purchased locally. Consulates and Embassies Embassies are listed under Oslo.The embassy can always give information of the nearest consulate to where you are. Many consulates are also listed under the town/city. You have to pay a small fee. Norwegian Maritime Authority Please note that in this booklet the Norwegian Maritime Authority is abbreviated to NMA. Office hours Banks: Most banks open at am and close at 3.30 pm, Monday - Friday. Closed Saturday. Thursday is normally late closing day. During the summer, from 15 May to 15 September, the opening hours are normally from or am to 3.00 pm. All banks operate a cash dispenser (ATM) where it is possible to withdraw cash using your credit-card. Shops Opening hours for shops vary a lot. Small shops may close as early as 4 pm, while department stores may close as late as 6 or 8 pm. Saturdays: The usual closing time is 3 pm or 6 pm (dept. stores). 4 Oslo Oslo county Oslo is the capital of Norway, and has approx. 605,000 inhabitants. It is situated at the end of the 100 km long Oslo fjord and the city was founded in The King s Palace and the Parliament (165 representatives) are situated in the centre of the city. 6 Halden Østfold county The city of Halden is situated 116 km southeast of Oslo, and has approx. 29,300 inhabitants. The port was built up around the export of timber in the 16th century. Halden has played an important part in the defence of Norway. The city has burnt down four times since the 16th century, but due to large trade and shipping industries it was quickly rebuilt. 7 Fredrikstad Østfold county Fredrikstad is situated 91 km southeast of Oslo at the outlet of the river Glomma. The city has approx. 74,800 inhabitants. After its foundation in 1567 it has been burnt down and rebuilt several times. The main industry was originally related to the timber trade and agriculture. The main port is situated at the outlet of the Drammen river, close to the city centre. 9 Holmestrand Vestfold county Holmestrand is situated 70 km south of Oslo and has approx. 10,100 inhabitants. The city has been known for its timber trade since the 16th century. 12 Grenland (Bamble, Porsgrunn and Skien) Telemark county The district is situated 140 km south of Oslo and has approx. 103,000 inhabitants. It had originally lumber and pure ice as its main industries. Today it is one of the largest heavy industry areas in Norway, with the petrochemical and cement industry as its cornerstones. 13 Arendal Aust-Agder county Arendal is situated 253 km south of Oslo and has approx. 42,400 inhabitants. It is the oldest city in southern Norway, and was called Venice of Scandinavia due to the city being built on several small islands. The lumber trade with the Netherlands was the most important industry in the early days, and Arendal was at that point the largest maritime city in Norway.
