Any revisions have to be manually amended which impose constraints on resources (specifically time). The emergence of Computer Aided Design (CAD) packages has revolutionised the way designs are transformed into reality, significantly improving efficiency in term of editing and revising drawings. This module invites you to prepare, modify and enhance designs using CAD software as the principal platform. You will be able to explore various features and functions of CAD software and apply them in the design process. It provides you with an introduction to the knowledge and skills required to use appropriate computer software as an aid to design in the built environment industry. Module Learning Outcomes Module Content On successful completion of the module, you will be able to: 1. Transfer traditional drawing and detailing skills to the CAD environment and use CAD software to produce drawings and construction details. 2. Recognise the various features and functions of CAD software and explore their potential in the design process within the computer aided environment. Introduction Principles of CAD environments; similarities, differences and

2 advantages compared to the traditional design and drafting environment. Systems Requirements, Configuration, Drawing Set-up & Drawing Aids File management, systems initialisation, creating and saving drawings, drawing set-up, activating commands, drawing methods, co-ordinate entry. Operational Efficiency, Drawing and Editing Layers, aids to operational efficiency, drawing, text, editing, blocks, inquiry commands. Dimensioning, Cross-hatching, Drawing Display and Plotting Dimensioning, cross-hatching, drawing display, plotters and plotting. Printing/plotting of rendered images, model and layout space in 3D environment. Isometric and Perspective views Creating, manipulating saving and restoring. 3D pan, zoom, orbit and continuous orbit. Camera swivel and distance adjusting. Standardisation and improving CAD productivity Standard approaches to drawing setup, layers and plotting preparation. Use of design centre. Use of external referencing, drawing template arrangements and CAD protocols. Network collaborative date sharing and design, Intranet/Internet facilities. Introduction to 3D architectural CAD environment Introduction to 3D environment and co-ordinate system. Drawing, modifying and display techniques. Overview of 3D computer modelling; generic and architecture specific BIM systems and environments. Introduction and principles of object-orientated computer aided design. Object definitions of basic elements, such as walls, floors, columns, stairs and roofs. Principles of creating light sources, material properties, setting up cameras. Tutorials Integrated design and drafting group tutorials. Module Learning and Teaching Methods Learning & Teaching Methods: The development of 3D CAD knowledge and skills in architecture specific CAD environments is proportional to the time spent gaining hands-on experience. In this module, there is no substitute for practical application of skills and the cumulative benefits of student centred learning. The formal time will be spent in the computer laboratory with the

3 tutor guiding you through a series of structured lectures and tutorial exercises. As the module develops, you will be expected to take greater control of their learning environment and the role of the tutor will be one of facilitator and design mentor. Summative Assessment Method: CW1:100% Weighting: Learning Outcome 1 and 2 to be assessed. An individual portfolio-based assignment requiring you to analyse a posed brief and propose the design for a simple building solution. Upon agreement of a proposal with your module leader acting on behalf of the client, you are expected to produce appropriate drawings and construction details. You are expected to demonstrate competent computer drafting skills and a high level of understanding and control of CAD commands. Furthermore, you are expected to report on the rationale, regulatory framework and design considerations regarding the design and level of drawing production, showing an awareness of the wider context. 5 Use of AutoCAD software: There are many CAD dedicated computers available for you to use. The labs are MS101, MS213a and the workshop mezzanine level lab at Markeaton Street and B222, B224 and B225 at Kedleston Road. They are all loaded with same image and have all the software you need, so please do not put the pressure on one lab alone. Obviously, for your free reign work you do need to find the one where there are no lectures. AutoCAD 2010 on-line resources You can gain access to the Autodesk Student Community and download the newest software and on-lint tutorials as well.
