(Core C) Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to: solve equations and application problems. graph and identify characteristics of algebraic and transcendental function. perform function operations. graphically and verbally describe trigonometric functions, their inverses, and their relationships to one another. determine angle measures and side lengths for any triangle. verify and use appropriate trigonometric identities. solve trigonometric equations and application problems. illustrate knowledge of vector properties, parametric equations, trigonometric form of complex numbers and polar equations. identify and manipulate conic sections. prove statements using mathematical induction. use properties of sequences and series to determine their convergence. evaluate limits graphically, algebraically and numerically. use definition of continuity find the derivative and use it in applications. Prerequisite Course(s) Required: Placement through the College Testing and Placement Program or completion of MATH 103 AND MATH 104 with a grade of C or better. Required Materials: Text: PRECALCULUS, Blitzer, PEARSON Prentice Hall, 5 th Edition, with accompanying MyMathLab Student Access kit. OR Online access to MyMathLab which can be purchased at
2 Methods of Evaluation: 12 Online Homework Assignments: 10% 6 Online Quizzes: 25% 2 Paper Tests: 40% 1 Paper Final: 25% Grading System: = A = B = C = D 59 0 = F Assignments: Each student will be responsible for completing graded assignments online throughout the semester. Assignments submitted after the due date will only receive 50% credit. The lowest assignment grade will be dropped at the end of the semester. Quizzes &Examinations: Six online quizzes, two proctored pencil-and-paper examinations and a comprehensive final examination will be given. The material covered for each test is posted in the syllabus. If a student fails to take an online quiz a zero will be recorded. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped at the end of the semester. If a student fails to take a proctored exam by the end of the time it is available, they may take a make-up exam provided that they qualify based upon the following guidelines. Only one make up per student per semester will be given. It is the student s responsibility to contact the instructor in order to arrange a make-up exam. Tutoring: Tutoring is available in the Learning Center at each campus. In addition, online tutoring is available through SMARTHINKING. Go to the Virtual Campus website for registration information. Other Information: 1. No retests will be given. Test scores will NOT be dropped from the calculation of the course grade. Once the test is taken, that is the grade that will be counted. 2. I expect the highest level of academic honesty from all of my students. Any incident of academic dishonesty will result in a zero on the work in question and/or a grade of an F in the course. 3. In order to succeed in this course, students will need to log onto the course website on a regular basis. Announcements concerning graded homework assignments and tests, as well as material to supplement the text and discussions will be posted on the website. It is the student s responsibility to keep pace with the class and to adhere to all posted deadlines. I recommend spending at least hours a week on this class to be successful. 4. s from students will normally receive a response within 24 hours. Response time may be longer on weekends and college holidays and breaks.
3 5. Withdrawal Information: *Registered students need to log into the course website on the first day of classes, May 26 th. *Students who have registered for the course but have not logged into the course website by May 29 th will be dropped from the course as never attended. *No withdrawals will be processed after noon on August 3 rd.
