1 Biography! Recognized for his inspired performances and beautiful tone, Hungarian musician Balázs Rumy (pronounced Ba-laash Roomy) has served as principal of both the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra in Vienna, Austria and the Verbier Festival Orchestra in Switzerland. He has performed with these orchestras in many of the best concert halls in Europe, including Amsterdam s Concertgebouw, Vienna s Musikverein and Milan s La Scala. An accomplished chamber musician, Mr. Rumy has performed in chamber music concerts throughout Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland and Hungary, and has played in several international music festivals, including Spain s Santander International Festival, Germany s Collegium Musicum in Pommersfelden and Hungary s Budapest Autumn Festival. A prizewinner of numerous international competitions, including the 62nd Geneva Competition (2007 Concours de Geneve), the 2009 Carl Nielsen International Competition (Denmark) and the 2010 Giuseppe Tassis Competition (Italy), he participated (through invitation) in the annual conference of the International Clarinet Association in both Japan and in the United States, for three consecutive years. $ Mr. Rumy s season includes six appearances in New York City. Of his September 25 performance with the New Juilliard Ensemble of Carmen Moore s Concerto for Ornette, Steve Smith of The New York Times wrote, Within the ensemble, another saxophonist, Balazs Rumy, played sweetly in written material; one gorgeous passage that paired Mr. Rumy with Lauren Williams on English horn suggested what could have been the homegrown American sound Dvorak imagined. Also of note is Balazs s collaboration with pianist Allegra Chapman, violinist Justyna Jara and cellist Avery Waite in five consecutive performances (December 14-18, 2011) of choreographer Pam Tanowitz s piece (featuring Charles Wuorinen s Fortune), opening the Juilliard Dance Division s season in the Peter Jay Sharp Theater. Mr. Rumy presents two solo recitals at Juilliard: December 7 at the Willson Theater, and April 25, 2012 at Paul Hall. He ushers in the New Year with a performance at Juilliard s Chamberfest on January 21. February 8 he performs in an afternoon concert with other Artist Diploma students violinist Itamar Zorman, pianist Jie Yuan and double bassist Rémi Yulzari in Alice Tully Hall. Other U.S. engagements include concerts on November 16 and 17, 2011, in Iowa city with pianist Liza Stepanova and cellist Michael Katz. Recent performances include Stive Reich s Music for 18 Musicians with Axiom and Mozart s Quintet with Angela Hewitt in the Verbier Festival, Switzerland. In November, 2010, Mr. Rumy traveled to Japan as a SYLFF Fellow to play Mozart s Kegelstatt Trio at the Ritsumeikau Asia Pacific University in Beppu City, presented by the Tokyo Foundation, with pianist Rachel Kudo and violist Luke Fleming. $ In addition to his competition honors, Balázs Rumy is the recipient of several scholarships, including a Juilliard scholarship, a Loránd Eötvös Scholarship from the Hungarian Government, a Gustav Mahler Orchestra Academy Scholarship, a Scholarship from the Swiss Government and a Róbert Kovács Scholarship (Budapest, Hungary). Most recently he was awarded (September 2011) Juilliard s MAP and IMP Fellowships. He will teach clarinet both in individual and group lessons at Juilliard and at New York City s Public School 46 throughout the school year. $ Mr. Rumy was born in Székesféhervár (pronounced say-cash-fe-hear-var), Hungary in 1983, and studied piano before turning to the clarinet. He holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and a Masters degree in performance from the Conservatory of Geneva, Switzerland. His main professors were Béla Kovács, Thomas Friedli, Romain Guyot and Jean-Michel Bertelli. Additional studies have been at the Tibor Varga Academy in Sion, Switzerland and master classes with Charles Neidich in Weimar, Germany. Fluent in both Hungarian and English, Mr. Rumy moved to New York City in fall 2010 as one of only two artists accepted that year into the prestigious Artist Diploma program at The Juilliard School, where he continues his musical studies under the guidance of Charles Neidich while pursuing his musical career. When his schedule permits, Mr. Rumy indulges in his hobbies: traveling, cooking, photographing and playing the bass clarinet and the saxophone.
