She graduated from the University of Redlands in April 2014 with her Bachelor of Music degree, and currently studies with Professor Louanne Long, Artist-in-Residence of Piano. Ms. Tait s musical achievements during her undergraduate career were manifold. In October 2011, she was featured in a master class with Polish pianist Krystian Tkaczewski, performing Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 14 by Mendelssohn. Ms. Tait is an advocate for music education and is credited with starting a youth choir at a local middle school. She currently teaches private piano lessons through the Community School of Music and the Arts, where she maintains a private studio of fifteen children. After completing her Master of Music degree, Ms. Tait plans to pursue doctoral studies in Piano Pedagogy and Performance, combining two of her greatest passions. Her ultimate goal is to teach piano at the collegiate level while continually seeking diverse solo and collaborative performance opportunities. Nicole Hans, flute Nicole Hans, a California native, is a senior majoring in flute performance at University of Redlands. Raised in Thousand Oaks, she started playing flute at age nine and began formal study with Ann Erwin (University of Wyoming, University of Tennessee) at fifteen. At Professor Erwin s recommendation, Nicole entered the Gold Medal Honor s Recital in 2010 and 2011 and was a finalist both years. In 2011, Nicole began her studies with a music scholarship at the University of Redlands under the tutelage of Artist Teacher of Flute Sara Andon. She has since played in many ensembles, theater productions, and recitals, alongside premiering innovative student compositions. Throughout her college career, she has performed for such respected musical personalities as Liisa Ruoho (Sibelius Academy, Finland) and Ransom Wilson (Yale University). In the fall of 2013, Nicole spent a semester abroad in Vienna, Austria giving concerts of chamber music and studying privately with Furugh Karimi-Jafar-Zadeh (University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna) and soloist Jasmine Choi. In 2014, Nicole qualified as a student musician for the Redlands Symphony Orchestra and was a finalist in both the University s annual Concerto Competition and the Diablo Symphony s Concerto Competition. She plans pursue a graduate degree and eventual PhD in music performance at a prominent European conservatory in Nicolai Gervasi-Monarrez, alto saxophone Inspired by his older brother and other family members with a musical background, Nicolai Gervasi-Monarrez decided to begin his musical career in middle school. Though his early interest was in trumpet, everything changed when he saw a saxophone for the first time. Nicolai continued playing through high school where Mr. Brent Levine, a University of Redlands alumnus with a Master s Degree in Saxophone Performance, quickly became a knowledgeable mentor for Nicolai. By his senior year, Nicolai had performed in numerous honor bands and as lead alto saxophonist in his school s top jazz and concert bands. Nicolai is currently a junior music performance major and has studied under the instruction of Dr. Eddie Smith for three years, evolving into an accomplished performer. He currently performs in the Studio Big Band, Wind Ensemble and the University Saxophone Quartet (which recently submitted an audition CD to the National Fischoff Chamber Music Competition to be held on the campus of Notre Dame). This will be his second consecutive President s Honor Recital performance. To hear the full Fuzzy Bird Sonata, you are invited to attend Nicolai s junior recital on April 2, 2015.
5 Additional Prize Winners Soloist with the Redlands Symphony Orchestra: Michael Malakouti, piano Pianist Michael Malakouti, whose playing is characterized by powerful technique and robust energy coupled with expressive sensitivity, has earned high praise for his performances in venues throughout Southern California and Western Europe. He regularly captivates audiences with eclectic programming, an enormous tonal palette, and his compelling presence in service to the music. Most recently Mr. Malakouti was named Grand Prize Winner of the University of Redlands Concerto Competition. As a result, he appeared as soloist with the Redlands Symphony Orchestra on February 14, 2015 in Memorial Chapel, under the baton of Boi Co Nguyen, in a performance of Chopin s Concerto No. 2 in F Minor. Mr. Malakouti is presently completing a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance at the University of Redlands under the tutelage of distinguished teacher and performer Louanne Long. Mr. Malakouti is a recipient of the Lehigh endowed piano scholarship, a past winner of the President s Honor Recital auditions, and a contestant in the International Liszt Competition. In 2013, he received a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Redlands. A native of Moreno Valley, Mr. Malakouti began studying music seriously at Riverside Community College (RCC) under the instruction of Jasminka Knecht and Judith Johansen. While at RCC, he was the recipient of the Carroll L. and Rose T. Quinn Scholarship and recognized as the Student of Distinction in Piano. In 2009, Mr. Malakouti received a scholarship to attend the Dartington College of Arts in England where he studied with renowned pianist, John Lill. During this period he met master harpsichord builder and performer Colin Booth. This was Mr. Malakouti s first introduction to the harpsichord, sparking a love for the instrument that has persisted. He continues to study and perform early music as well as contemporary music written for the harpsichord. Four years after his experiences in England, Mr. Malakouti returned to Europe for intense concentration in the culture and history of the masters of classical music. In the Spring of 2013, he was accepted as a student of artist teacher Cordelia Höfer-Teutsch at the Mozarteum Music Academy in Salzburg, Austria. In addition to performing, Mr. Malakouti teaches a full studio of students ranging in age from young to old. He was integral in the development of the successful San Bernardino CAPS music program, which offered free music lessons after school to disadvantaged children. Michael Malakouti finds his true passion is sharing music with others. And this he continues to do with utmost success through the channels of public performance, teaching, and charity work. Soloist with the University Orchestra: Justin Brunette, baritone Baritone Justin Brunette has sung many musical genres including opera, operetta, choral and musical theater.
