5 Where do we get the know-how? There is very skilled labour available in Tampere due to the local environmental science education. Our personnel are 100% from Tampere! The Tampere Region s universities and other educational institutions provide high-level research and education, and are active cooperation partners for the Cleantech & Energy industry. - Pasi Mäkelä, CEO, Doranova TAMPERE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY Tampere University of Technology (TUT) is Finland s second-largest university of engineering sciences. The university s statutory duty is to provide the highest education in its field. Research collaboration with business and industry is at the heart of Tampere University of Technology. Research and development supporting the Cleantech & Energy cluster: Power plant and combustion technologies TProvides in-depth insight into thermal conversion processes Takes into account both experimental research and numerical modelling Works in close co-operation with the Finnish energy industry Finds solutions to the practical problems constantly faced by industry Distribution networks and Smart Grids Develops methods for electricity distribution network planning and operation and information system applications for future energy systems including renewables and other active resources Partners with domestic and international research institutions as well as industry Has extensive laboratories, equipment and simulation softwares, as well as competent and collaborative research staff Other related high-level research TAMPERE UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES FIMECC Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) offers Bachelors- FIMECC Ltd. (Finnish Metals and Engineering Competence Cluster) is an open innovation R&D company. The aim of FIMECC is to increase and deepen the cooperation between companies, universities and research institutes in R&D. From the cleantech point of view, FIMECC programmes have advanced industrial environmental impact, energy efficiency and low-energy consumption and emissions. and Masters-level studies for over 10,000 students in seven educational fields. There are more than 3,600 engineering students at TAMK. The oldest still functional international environmental engineering programme in Finland, thus very well-known and attractive for applicants, can be found at TAMK Areas of studies supporting the Cleantech & Energy cluster: Energy and Environmental Technology Mechanical and Production Engineering Intelligent machines Automation Technology Coming: Biohub, recycling and renewable energy based on bio Current programmes related to the Cleantech & Energy cluster: FIMECC DEMAPP: The programme will provide competitive environmentally sustainable solutions for the Finnish process, engineering and energy industries, leading to better performance by creating new high-performance materials. Over its 14-year history, cooperation with companies related to environmental engineering, consulting and cleantech have offered us hundreds of thesis topics, practical training placements, student projects and, most important of all, employment to graduates. Currently % (about 60-70) of the students are foreigners - Eeva-Liisa Viskari, Principal Lecturer FIMECC LIGHT: The programme provides the potential for saving raw materials and energy and decreasing CO2 emissions over the lifetime of cars and trucks, heavy-duty vehicles and other moving equipment and machinery. FIMECC EFFIMA: The target is to develop new technology and solutions that enable new machines, devices and systems with dramatically lower life-cycle costs compared to what is the international state-of-the-art today. We have very good cooperation with the TAMK environmental department. We are being introduced to the African market through the students whom we got to know in TAMK projects. We may open a waste collection business there. They are the decision-makers in the Africa of tomorrow!, - Hannu Jokinen, CEO, Molok Ltd CLEEN Cluster for Energy and Environment - CLEEN MMEA: The research programme objective is to develop new technologies, methods, tools and services in the area of measuring, environmental monitoring and EEA. 6 What about the business environment? The Tampere Region Fastest growing region in Finland Population places of business 2 nd largest airport in the country Up to 15% of Finland s national R&D budget is spent in Tampere In Tampere everything works Year after year, Tampere tops the list of the most attractive cities in Finland as chosen by people and companies. This is because all the pieces fall into place in the region. Here are just a few reasons why: Tampere Cleantech & Technology Region Energy Industry (total) Companies 35+ 2,700 Employees ,000 Turnover 700M 7,751M Optimal logistic location in Finland TThe Tampere Region is located at the crossroads of logistical routes. The Tampere Region is a hub of the most important motorways and railways in Finland, and Tampere-Pirkkala Airport is the second largest international airport in the country. 41% of foreign companies in the Tampere Region say that one of the most important reasons to stay there is its logistical location within Finland. Availability of competent manpower Students generate the impulse for the renewal of cities. One in five of the inhabitants of Tampere is a student in higher education. After they graduate, they stay in the region. 66% of foreign companies in the Tampere Region say that the most important reason to stay in the region is the availability of competent manpower and a low attrition rate. Growth center with a reasonable cost level The Tampere Region is the second largest growth centre in Finland. The population is expected to grow by 90,000 inhabitants by 2030, but the cost level is lower than in many other large economic areas. For example, wage costs in the Tampere Region are 20% lower than in the capital region of Finland. Regional cooperation The overall political will of the region and different city departments offer platforms for testing and piloting new solutions invented by cleantech companies. The central location of Tampere in Southern Finland is excellent. International connections also work well with direct flights. - Timo Sarlin, CEO, Wavin-Labko 10 11
