9 Our disciplines 09 Our disciplines Accounting The University of Melbourne has taught accounting since 1925 and has built a strong reputation as a premier educator in the field. Today, the Department of Accounting proudly maintains and enhances that reputation. As Australia s leading accounting department, it attracts high calibre academic staff and students. Accounting in today s business world is extremely sophisticated. An accountant is a strategic adviser and business partner who must have an in-depth understanding of business issues and processes, as well as the skills necessary for sound decision-making. Accounting studies will equip you with the skills to produce and interpret financial information that reflects how organisations operate and perform. You will learn how to produce this information for a wide range of users, including external firm stakeholders like shareholders and creditors, and also for managers within an organisation. Actuarial Studies Actuarial Studies is a discipline well-known for its quantitative aspects and mathematical rigour. A graduate qualification in this area provides a natural pathway to working in the insurance sector and can offer real competitive advantages in today s financial services industry. An Actuary s work is based upon a multi-disciplinary background of mathematics, statistics, demography, finance and economics. The Centre for Actuarial Studies is located within the Department of Economics. The Centre is one of the six teaching units in Australia that are fully accredited by the Actuaries Institute. Members of the Centre undertake research in insurance, superannuation, financial mathematics and related areas. Our actuarial programs are firmly established and conducted by academics respected in their fields. Economics Economics provides skills in problem solving for business and government. It examines ways to understand what happens in markets, the performance of national economies and approaches for analysing and interpreting data. Ultimately, economics facilitates better decision making about the myriad of problems you will confront in the commercial world or in government. Economics students at MBS reap the benefits of studying with the leading economics department in Australia. Subjects are taught by some of the world s best economists scholars whose research places them at the forefront of their discipline and who regularly advise government and international agencies. The Department of Economics has several dedicated research units attracting local and overseas academics, and continually pushes the boundaries of knowledge in the fields of economics and econometrics. The Faculty of Business and Economics is also home to the Melbourne Institute, Australia s leading and longest standing research institute in the field of economics. Finance Financial markets, products and practices are fast-evolving, posing challenges for practitioners who must keep pace with increasingly complex products. Finance programs at MBS have been designed to prepare students for these professional demands by blending the best of academic knowledge and professional practice. Finance programs at MBS are developed and taught by academics from the Department of Finance, one of the few Australian university departments exclusively committed to this discipline. The Department is internationally recognised for its world standard research, research training, and undergraduate and postgraduate education in the discipline. The global relevance of its curriculum is evidenced by its program partnership with the CFA Institute. In addition to a solid grounding in finance theory, students can gain practical knowledge from industry professionals engaged by the department to teach in selected subjects. Marketing Marketing is about identifying and understanding customers and giving them what they want. Effective marketing is everything that needs to be done in order to deliver the products and services to the customer, including research, planning, pricing, packaging, promotion, selling and distribution. 10 Melbourne Business School Master of Management Programs Our Master of Management suite is designed for recent graduates from all disciplines, those with minimal or no work experience and early career changers. The degrees are designed to give you a sound business foundation and perspective, and specialised knowledge in your area of choice. 11 Master of Management Programs 11 I realised that if I wanted to grow fast in my career, technical skills were not enough and I needed to develop management skills to gain a holistic view of business. I chose the Master of Management which has made me realise I have a passion toward leadership roles. The program covers a broad spectrum of management activities including all the key areas needed to become a successful manager and leader, such as managing innovation and change, motivating and leading people, developing strategies for national and global markets, and developing customer-oriented organisations. Who is it for? This program is ideal for students holding an undergraduate degree in an area outside of business/ commerce whose goal may be to assume a managerial position in their particular field of expertise. The program is also suited to business/commerce students who wish to add a specialisation in management to their portfolio. Entry requirements*: An undergraduate degree in any discipline, or equivalent; and a statement of intent outlining why they wish to be considered for the course. In ranking applications, the Selection Committee will consider: prior academic performance; and the statement of intent. The Selection Committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application. 14 Melbourne Business School Master of Management (Accounting) The Master of Management (Accounting) provides specialist training in accounting and enables students to develop their knowledge and skills in financial accounting, managerial accounting, auditing, taxation, corporate finance and accounting information systems. Who is it for? The Master of Management (Accounting) is suited to students who have an undergraduate degree in areas outside of business/ commerce who wish to practice accountancy. The program is also suited to business/commerce students who wish to add accounting to their portfolio. Professional accreditation This degree is certified by CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. Successful completion of the Master of Management (Accounting) prepares students to apply for entry to the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) or Certified Practising Accountant (CPA Australia) professional studies program. 15 Master of Management (Accounting) 15 Master of Management (Accounting) program outline: The Master of Management (Accounting) degree usually comprises a 200-point program, however you may be eligible to earn your degree with 150 points depending on previous studies. The Master of Management (Accounting) has complimented my undergraduate engineering degree by giving me greater business acumen, that can often be lacking for technical professionals, and puts me in a better position to rise to a management-focussed position in the engineering field. Advanced levels of knowledge and skill in the two disciplines of accounting and finance are developed through a combination of core and elective subjects. Through the appropriate selection of subjects students are able to meet the professional requirements of CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. The program also provides advanced competencies, professional skills and knowledge in the finance discipline that will prepare graduates for entry into the finance profession. Who is it for? The Master of Management (Accounting and Finance) is suited to business/commerce students who wish to add accounting and finance to their portfolio.
