3 1 MESSAGE FROM THE CHANCELLOR Originally established in 2001 to meet the emerging demands of education in the 21st century, the National University System has spent the past decade evolving, expanding, and adapting to the ever-growing needs of a diverse population of lifelong learners. Never has this been truer than during the past year. National University, the flagship institution of the System, experienced unprecedented heights in Already the second-largest, private nonprofit institution of higher education in California, National University now holds the distinction of being the 16th-largest private nonprofit in the United States. The University s leadership role in preparing qualified educators gained even greater recognition in 2010 when National prepared more California teachers for credentialing for an unrivaled tenth year in a row. National University housed the largest special education program in the state and the second-largest in the nation. The University enrolled more students in its pre-licensure nursing program than any single institution in the state. For the first time, National University was named to The Chronicle of Higher Education s Honor Roll in the prestigious Best Colleges to Work For program, validating the University s commitment to providing students and employees with the best possible environment for success. This distinction placed National University in elite company alongside such notable universities as Michigan, Southern California, and Notre Dame. John F. Kennedy University enjoyed many milestones in its first year as a System affiliate, beginning with the successful extension of its WASC accreditation for seven more years and followed by its best financial performance in the past 10 years. Two of the System s more established affiliates, the Division of Pre-College Programs and Spectrum Pacific Learning Company, continued to seek out innovative ways to continue their leadership roles in online learning. In the coming year, two exciting new initiatives Integrative Health Review and the Center for Performance Psychology will continue to leverage the System s resources to gain broader awareness of issues related to health and wellness in the communities our collective System affiliates serve. The commitment to community displayed by the National University System will be a running theme throughout this report, as we focus on the ways the various affiliates seek to improve the lives of the men and women they serve. I encourage you to learn more about the National University System s ongoing commitment to community and innovative 21st century educational offerings showcased in the following pages. Sincerely, Jerry C. Lee Chancellor, National University System The National University Golf Academy, which opened its doors less than 12 months ago, and the National University System Institute for Policy Research, also one of the System s younger entities, provided the National University System with more positive media exposure than at any time in its history. In response to a growing need for the System s offerings around the world, National University International expanded its role to include all international recruiting and student services for the National University System. Reflecting the System s ability to adapt to change, WestMed College and JFK University expanded their programs to National University s campus in Costa Mesa, marking the first time both affiliates have enjoyed a presence in Southern California.

4 3 THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY SYSTEM More than a decade into his tenure as President of National University, Dr. Jerry C. Lee envisioned the future of higher education as something no one had seen before. Twenty first century learners would require multiple, flexible pathways to educational opportunities in formats that complemented the competing demands on their already busy lives. The National University System was established in 2001 to meet the emerging challenges and demands of education in the 21st century. Today, the System has become a unique model in higher education: a multi-tiered alliance of independent institutions with shared focus on accessibility and student success. Headquartered in La Jolla, California, the affiliates of the National University System include National University; John F. Kennedy University; National University International; the Division of Pre-College Programs, consisting of National University Academy and National University Virtual High School; Spectrum Pacific Learning Company LLC; and WestMed College. The System also houses the National University Golf Academy, the Center for Integrative Health, the National University System Institute for Policy Research, and the Center for Performance Psychology. Through their complementary educational offerings, the affiliates of the System are uniquely aligned to connect a diverse population of students to a network of innovative educational programs that are relevant to their lives, careers, and the marketplace and are delivered in a format that respects a complexity of life priorities. With combined operating budgets of $222.8 million, real estate valued at $145 million, an unrestricted net asset value of $500 million, and no significant debt, the market value of the National University System has been estimated at as much as $1 billion. In demonstration of the hallmark symbiosis between System affiliates, John F. Kennedy University established a presence in 2010 at National University s campus in Costa Mesa. Future plans include the expansion of more JFK University programs to Costa Mesa. In the future, a third System affiliate, WestMed College, will expand its offerings to the Costa Mesa campus, creating a unique complex of related vocational and degree programs unlike any other. National University and WestMed College share a campus in San Jose and plans are underway for the establishment of WestMed programs at National University s campus in Fresno. AS THE SYSTEM CONTINUES TO EVOLVE, ITS AFFILIATES WILL REMAIN DEDICATED TO CHANCELLOR LEE S VISION OF IMPROVING THE COMMUNITIES THAT THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE EXPANDED NATIONAL UNIVERSITY SYSTEM COMMUNITY CALL HOME. A SYSTEM-WIDE COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY In addition to relevant educational offerings, the affiliates of the National University System are bound by a common thread: a deep commitment to enriching the communities they serve. Whether it is through sustaining an educated citizenry or improving the daily lives of the people who call their communities home, the affiliates of the System share an institutional mandate that the dual purposes of education are to develop individual minds and improve the larger society. The affiliates of the System turned this commitment into action over the past year. According to a survey conducted by the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment at National University, more than 57 percent of its employees volunteer at charitable organizations. Longstanding National University policy provides for up to 16 hours (two work days) of paid leave per employee each year for volunteer service. The top five areas where National employees volunteer include youth (44 percent), women (18 percent), homelessness (14 percent), literacy (13 percent) and animal support (12 percent). On average, employees volunteer 11 hours of their time each month to more than 272 different organizations in and around the communities where National has locations. A few of the notable organizations National employees volunteer for include the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, Humane Society, the Rock Church, Salvation Army, and Volunteer San Diego. During the past year, the National University Golf Academy, in conjunction with the United States Golf Association (USGA), hosted junior golf camps designed to provide underprivileged youths 10- to 17-years-old with the opportunity to learn and play golf. The National University Golf Academy also hosted free sport psychology athletics labs to assist high school coaches and athletes interested in improving their mental approach to athletic endeavors. John F. Kennedy University s community counseling centers in Pleasant Hill, Oakland, and Sunnyvale offer affordable, confidential mental health services to persons who would otherwise go unserved. The Pleasant Hill campus also houses the University s Housing Advocacy Clinic. With public agencies increasingly cutting In addition to relevant educational offerings, the affiliates of the National University System are bound by a common thread: a deep commitment to enriching the communities they serve.

6 7 back on their offerings, the services provided by the counseling centers are critical to meeting the needs of the citizens in the communities JFK University serves. National University International continues to expand the System s presence around the world through partnerships and Online Information Centers offering highly sought-after American university programs to previously untapped markets in Korea, Colombia, and Peru. Moving forward, in the coming year, NUI will expand National s presence throughout Latin America, India, and China. The Division of Pre-College Programs is strengthening our communities by providing quality programs for today s youth so that they can be the backbone of a highlyeducated future workforce. Through National University Academy s innovative Career Paths program, traditional and adult high school students gain knowledge based on their career interests and life goals, resulting in a more personally meaningful educational experience where they learn more about their interests, abilities, experiences, and values, and how these relate to the working world. This year, the Academy graduated 206 individuals, many of whom are the first in their families to receive a high school diploma. Few things are as important as contributing to the overall health and well-being of a community, which is the stated purpose of the National University System Center for Integrative Health and its latest offering, Integrative Health Review. Launched in 2010, Integrative Health Review is a free online resource offering articles, videos, forums, interactive tools and resources, and RSS feeds from a diverse range of expert contributors and renowned health organizations, all aimed at helping people live longer and healthier lives. As the System continues to evolve, its affiliates will remain dedicated to Chancellor Lee s vision of improving the communities that the individuals served by National University System call home. With combined operating budgets of $222.8 million, real estate valued at $145 million, an unrestricted net asset value of $500 million, and no significant debt, the market value of the National University System has been estimated at as much as $1 billion. Spectrum Pacific Learning Company LLC helped develop, maintain, and host a website for the David Green Memorial Scholarship Fund, which was created with the dual purposes of providing scholarship awards to Bowie High School students as well as making donations to NARASD (formerly known as the National Alliance on Schizophrenia and Depression), a leading national charity that sponsors research on the treatment, prevention, and causes of mental health disorders. SPL also continues to be an active supporter of Patrons of the Prado, a philanthropic organization that supports an extraordinary collection of arts and cultural institutions at Balboa Park in San Diego. By training emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and licensed vocational nurses, WestMed College helps safeguard the neighborhoods we call home. Over the last year, vocational nursing students in Merced volunteered for the University of California, Merced s flu clinic, assisted at Castle Community Hospital s flu clinic, and demonstrated medical and surgical skills at a Merced High School Career Day. In San Jose, students in WestMed s emergency medical technician program installed fire alarms in local community mobile home parks.

7 9 SPECIAL SECTION: NATIONAL UNIVERSITY SYSTEM CENTER FOR PERFORMANCE PSYCHOLOGY For years, world-class athletes and high-performing organizations have been fascinated by the concept of performance psychology and how it relates to personal and organizational achievement. By studying the habits and techniques employed by championship-level teams and athletes, organizations have searched for a direct correlation between excellence in sport and success in the field of business. As a result, numerous studies and a wide range of expert information related to performance psychology is now readily available in a variety of formats for individuals and organizations interested in performing at their highest levels. With a stated purpose of disseminating the latest research on performance psychology, the National University System Center for Performance Psychology was organized earlier this year under the direction of Chancellor Jerry C. Lee, who remains committed to expanding the System s offerings while simultaneously making the best possible use of all of the resources available to the System s collective affiliates. Based in San Diego, the Center will work collaboratively with coaches, parents, athletes, and organizations to foster coaching and performance excellence. The Center will utilize the most up-to-date technology and research in sports and psychology to assist athletes in achieving their performance goals and to help coaches improve their team building and communication skills. Through its conferences, workshops, speaker series, and certificate courses, the Center will advance the public s knowledge of performance psychology in both athletics and organizations. Through online resources, in-person seminars, certificates, and consulting services, the Center will have a significant community outreach component designed to reach performers with diverse interests and talents, including youth sports, coaching excellence, body-mind relationships in daily living, organizational behavior, and corporate leadership. The Center will host the inaugural Performance Psychology Conference in February 2011 at National University s Spectrum Business Park campus in San Diego. The conference will bring together coaches, athletes, sport psychologists, applied psychologists, and educators to share knowledge and advancements in sport psychology, applied research and interventions in psychology, peak performance, and coaching. 8 11 SPECIAL SECTION: THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY SYSTEM INSTITUTE FOR POLICY RESEARCH Since joining the System in January of 2009, the National University System Institute for Policy Research has played a vital role in offering unbiased, expert commentary on the key economic issues facing the San Diego region. Given the difficult economic climate over the past three years, there has never been a greater need for the Institute for Policy Research s stated goal: promoting high-quality economic, policy, and public opinion research aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of local governments. As a result, the Institute s efforts have had a direct impact on several major regional decisions that will affect the long-term health of San Diego s economy. The National University System Institute for Policy Research released an unprecedented and ground-breaking report in February of 2010 on the impact of the golf industry on the San Diego economy. The report outlined for the first time the four pillars of the golf industry located in San Diego, including equipment manufacturers, professional tournaments, golf-related tourism, and the retail sale of golf equipment and apparel. The Institute s report demonstrated that the golf industry had a total direct and indirect economic value of $3.7 billion and was responsible for 26,900 jobs in the region. Spending on golf-related supplies and services from those living outside of the county totaled $1.5 billion, which is equal to the region annually hosting 10 Super Bowls or 37 Comic-Con conventions. Golf-related enterprises realized more revenue than the region s aerospace ($1.8 billion), agriculture ($1.6 billion), or software ($1.6 billion) industries. The Institute s golf economic impact report gained wide media coverage for the System, including stories on three local television stations and six newspaper mentions, including one on the front page of the San Diego Union-Tribune. In addition to the golf economic impact report, the Institute for Policy Research published seven other policy briefs or reports during the past year. One such report on regional fire protection also garnered extensive media attention for the System from such outlets as the San Diego Union-Tribune, North County Times, and KPBS, KNX, and KOGO radio stations in San Diego. The Institute for Policy Research has been featured in numerous print and electronic outlets, garnering more than 110 separate and distinct media hits, resulting in increased awareness of the System and its offerings in the local community. Prominent media outlets that have covered the Institute during that timeframe include TIME magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, National Public Radio, San Diego Union-Tribune, and all of San Diego s television and news radio stations. The Institute also continues to publish The San Diego Economic Ledger, a quarterly update on the performance of the San Diego economy. In 2010, the Institute added another branch to its outreach by producing more than five months of programming for a weekly radio segment on KOGO radio featuring Erik Bruvold, the president of the Institute. And Kelly Cunningham, economist and senior fellow, has joined the San Diego Union-Tribune s panel for the U-T Econometer, a weekly feature that focuses on hot economic topics impacting the San Diego region. ABOUT The National University System Institute for Policy Research conducts research and publishes articles, briefs, and other materials related to regional issues, including municipal government, economic policy, housing, transportation, infrastructure, and fire preparedness. As new challenges emerge and new students demand accessible higher education, National University will rise to the occasion and meet the unprecedented needs for an educated global citizenry. In the process, National University will set the standard for lifelong learning in the 21st century. NATIONAL UNIVERSITY IN THE COMMUNITY As one of National University s core values, the word community means much more than just the neighborhoods in which the University s employees work, live, and play. Community is at the heart of National University; it is a commitment to improving the lives of the men and women who have graced the University s classrooms. Community is a deeply shared belief that anyone who pursues lifelong learning has by extension sought to improve their own lives and the lives of the men and women who are part of their collective communities. In short, they have decided to make the world a better place. This commitment is rooted in Dr. Lee s annual address to the University Community in 1997 where he outlined National s mandate for mutual respect, encouragement, challenge, and support within its classroom walls and an institutional directive to give back to the communities it serves. At his urging, community was established as one of National University s official core values. A commitment to community has been a hallmark of Dr. Lee s leadership of National University. In 1996, as an element of National University s 25th anniversary celebration, Chancellor Lee awarded 25 scholarships to women who had been victims of domestic abuse. In subsequent years, he has renewed National University s support of survivors of domestic violence through initiatives, including the awarding of grants This year s Eco Fair was part of National s community outreach effort to educate and demonstrate the concepts of environmental and economic sustainability and stewardship.

In 2005, he was the first recipient of the Angel Award from WomenTogether, a committee of volunteers who raise funds for agencies that assist battered women and their children in San Diego. Never has National University s commitment to community been stronger than the present. In early 2010, the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment gathered information related to employee volunteer activities through the National University Volunteering Survey. More than 346 employees started the survey, with 283 completing with an 82 percent completion rate. Of the respondents, 57 percent (160 of 346) currently volunteer. When given the opportunity for volunteering in the future, 93 percent of the respondents indicated Yes or Maybe. The top five areas where National University employees volunteer include youth (44 percent), women (18 percent), homelessness (14 percent), literacy (13 percent), and animal support (12 percent). On average, the respondents volunteer 11 hours of their time each month to more than 272 different organizations in and around the communities where National University has locations. A few of the notable organizations for which National University employees volunteer include the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, Humane Society, the Rock Church, Salvation Army, and Volunteer San Diego. In San Diego, National University sponsored a grant for the Council on Literacy to support an effort to develop video gaming software designed to help people learn how to read. Specifically, the grant was for the express use of the investigation and research of how video gaming technology and software can help make literacy instruction more effective and entertaining, and the research was carried out exclusively by National University s School of Media and Communications. honor places National University in the top 15 percent of all schools nationwide, marking the second year in a row that National University has been honored for its commitment to the military. Previously, G.I. Jobs and Military Advanced Education magazine both ranked National University among its Military Friendly Schools and one of America s Top Military Friendly Colleges and Universities. In 2010, the National University Golf Academy, in conjunction with the United States Golf Association (USGA), hosted junior golf camps designed to provide underprivileged youths 10- to 17-years-old with the opportunity to learn and play golf. The National University Golf Academy also hosted free sport psychology athletics labs to assist high school coaches and athletes interested in improving their mental approach to athletic endeavors. The Eco Fair featured information booths and demonstrations from more than 25 local companies, government agencies, and NGOs, plus environmentally friendly activities for families and children. In May, the University s Fresno campus held the 13th Annual Young Writers Competition, where local writers, grades 4 through 12, were ranked on poetry submissions related to the theme of Words of Inspiration. The writers provided poems based on a person who had been an inspiration in their lives, whether it was someone famous, an Olympic athlete, a teacher, a parent, or anyone who had made a difference in the writer s life. All participants were awarded a certificate for entering the competition, and cash prizes were awarded to the first-, second-, and third-place winners in three grade categories. A Great Place to Work National University was placed in elite company during the past year when it was named one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to a survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education. The results, released in July 2010 in The Chronicle s third annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of more than 42,000 employees at 277 colleges and universities. In all, only 97 of the 277 institutions achieved Great College to Work For recognition for specific best practices and policies. Results were reported for small, medium, and large institutions, with National University included among the large universities with 10,000 or more students alongside such notable institutions as Michigan, Southern California, and Notre Dame. National s employees rated the University highly enough to be recognized as a Great College to Work For in the following categories: Collaborative Governance; Professional/Career-Development Programs; Teaching Environment; Compensation and Benefits; Facilities, Workspaces, and Security; Job Satisfaction and Support; Work/Life Balance; Confidence in Senior Leadership; Supervisor or Department- Chair Relationship; and Respect and Appreciation. The survey results were based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback. For the first time in its history, National University was named to The Chronicle of Higher Education s prestigious Best Colleges to Work For program.

19 33 Given their shared educational vision and near mirror-image core values, John F. Kennedy University s affiliation with the National University System was a natural partnership. JOHN F. KENNEDY UNIVERSITY For more than 45 years, JFK University has been a pioneer in higher education, providing working adults with lifelong learning opportunities in the San Francisco Bay area and beyond. The University s students, many of whom balance full-time jobs and family responsibilities, embark on a learning pathway designed to positively impact their futures. Students are immersed in an educational experience that combines the benefit of an interactive, student-focused classroom with the convenience of evening and weekend schedules and easily accessible campus locations. JFK University s campuses in Pleasant Hill, Berkeley, and Campbell draw students predominantly from Alameda and Contra Costa counties, with the remaining students coming from San Francisco, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz counties. The Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.), Museum Studies, Sport Psychology and Holistic Health Education programs draw individuals from across the country, and the Integral Theory program attracts students from around the world. The average age of the student population ranges from 25- to 49-years-old. Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), JFK University offers undergraduate-completion programs, graduate and doctoral degrees, and continuing education certificates. All of the University s programs are delivered at affordable tuition rates that keep students career aspirations within reach. Graduates from the University s Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology - Holistic and Marriage and Family Therapy programs are highly sought after in the Bay Area for their practical knowledge and hands-on experience. With only a handful of similar programs available anywhere, the Master of Arts in Holistic Health Education is positioned to become a leading program for the University. Approval by the American Bar Association (ABA) of the University s legal studies and paralegal programs make them among the most coveted in the region. True to the vision and forethought of its namesake, John F. Kennedy University is focused on providing an atmosphere in which students can expand their intellectual and professional horizons. The University s adaptable, forward-thinking academic programs offer new possibilities to individuals who share a commitment to continuously improving their lives through education. The benefits of affiliation with the System were immediate for JFK University, beginning with the University receiving a successful seven-year reaffirmation of its accreditation from WASC.

20 35 SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY HAS BEEN A HALLMARK OF THE JFK UNIVERSITY SINCE ITS FOUNDATION. John F. Kennedy University is focused on providing an atmosphere in which students can expand their intellectual and professional horizons. Given their shared educational vision and near mirror-image core values, John F. Kennedy University s affiliation with the National University System, which was approved by WASC in 2009, was a natural partnership. The affiliation supports the University and the System in realizing their mutual goals of providing lifelong learners with access to a complete range of educational offerings, including K-12, technical programs, certificates, teaching credentials, and associate s, bachelor s, master s, and doctoral degrees. The benefits of affiliation with the System were immediate for JFK University, which experienced its best financial performance in the past 10 years, fueled in part by an almost 15 percent growth in its registrations from academic year to The University also received a seven-year reaffirmation of its accreditation from WASC. In cooperation with the National University System marketing group, the University s multichannel marketing efforts expanded outreach to include the launch earlier this year of a revamped website, successfully incorporating JFK University into the National University System brand. The improved site features interactive search capabilities using Google technology, enhanced navigation, prospective and current student-focused content, and new imagery. JFK University reorganized in FY10 from five schools (Education and Liberal Arts, Holistic Studies, Law, Management, and Professional Psychology) to three Colleges Undergraduate Studies, Professional Studies, and Law. For both the University and its students, this reorganization will enhance opportunities for linking between programs, as well as stimulate collaboration across the University s student service touch points. These newly created Colleges will continue to build on the University s mission to offer a rich and supportive learning environment and prepare students to reach their potential as successful professionals in their fields of study. The University s academic philosophy is rooted in a practical learning approach, so a field component is integrated into many of its programs. Graduate psychology students get first-hand experience in providing counseling services at one of the University s three community counseling centers. Students enjoy unique program outcomes through the University s dynamic, hands-on internships offered in the nationally-recognized sport psychology and museum studies programs. Psychology remains the largest overall discipline at John F. Kennedy University. After the Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology, the Doctorate of Psychology (Psy.D.), which is accredited by the American Psychiatric Association, and the Juris Doctor are the University s second- and third-largest programs, respectively. For fall 2010, the University is offering new programs at its main campus in Pleasant Hill, including a joint JD/MBA program, which provides graduates with two valuable degrees: a Juris Doctor from the College of Law and a Master of Business Administration from the College of Professional Studies. The joint degree emphasizes the values of social justice and community service with a focus on socially responsible business practices and sustainable organizational development and operations. Other new programs added this fall include graduate certificates in Ecotherapy (hybrid format) and Leadership and Sustainable Change (online). Looking toward the winter and spring quarters, the University is planning to launch new MBA specializations in Public Administration and Entrepreneurial Leadership and a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts. Leveraging the online expertise of its fellow affiliates of the National University System, JFK University is expanding the number of its online programs starting with a certificate in Exercise and Sport Performance. Moving forward, pending WASC approval, the University is looking to offer its Master of Sport Psychology online, along with a Bachelor of Science in Law Enforcement Leadership and a Master of Laws (LLM). In addition to the academic reorganization and new program offerings, John F. Kennedy University s students, faculty, and administration will benefit from physical improvements to the University s campuses and facilities. Earlier this year, the computer lab at the main Pleasant Hill campus was renovated to include an additional 28 new computers and a private area for students in the Doctorate of Psychology program. At the Berkeley and Pleasant Hill campuses, state-of-theart service lines were installed to provide across-the-board higher speed data retrieval from the Internet, and more than 155 of the University s 205 PCs were updated with newer software packages. Students are immersed in an educational experience that combines the benefit of an interactive, student-focused classroom with the convenience of evening and weekend schedules and easily accessible campus locations.

21 37 John F. Kennedy University is focused on providing an atmosphere in which students can expand their intellectual and professional horizons. Connected for Life JFK University alumni, a community now more than 12,000 strong and growing, are involved in both the private and public sectors in the United States and abroad, doing their part to transform the world. The lifelong bond with its alumni begins with a unique one-to-one connection between the University s students and its dedicated faculty. What initially starts as a teacher-student relationship inevitably evolves into a union between individuals bound by mutual membership in the fraternity of educated men and women. The mission of LEAP is to help at-risk children and adolescents to succeed in school and life empowering them to make sound, thoughtful decisions. The unique aspect of the LEAP program is its use of participation in non-traditional games, as well as organized sports, as a catalyst to help youth learn more effective life skills and coping techniques. Through the LEAP program, youth learn sport psychology techniques, such as positive self-talk, anger management, goal setting, motivation and team building, in a supportive environment of positive reinforcement. The youth learn and practice these and other tools they need to recognize and evaluate their choices and develop respect for themselves and others. COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY Service to the community has been a hallmark of the JFK University since its foundation. The University s community counseling centers in Pleasant Hill, Oakland, and Sunnyvale offer affordable, confidential mental health services. With public agencies increasingly cutting back on their offerings, the services provided by the counseling centers are critical to meeting the needs of the citizens in the communities JFK University serves. In response to concern about the explosion of violence in neighborhoods across the country, JFK University partnered with the American Psychological Association (APA) in its Adults and Children Together (ACT) Against Violence initiative. The mission of ACT is to educate and mobilize families, professionals, and communities to prevent violence before it occurs. As the APA s Western-region training base for the ACT program, JFK University offers the Train-the-Trainer Workshops for individuals seeking certification to teach the ACT Parents Raising Safe Kids (PRSK) program, an eight-week, anti-violence education program for parents and other The Career Development Center at JFK University s Pleasant Hill campus is a resource not only for students, staff, and alumni, but also for the public. JFK University s commitment to helping disadvantaged youth extends to the Life Enhancement through Athletic & Academic Participation (LEAP) program, which is run under the guidance of the Sport Psychology program in the College of Professional Studies.

The majority of students are enrolled in the University Preparation Program, an intensive program designed for high school graduates, university students, or professionals who plan to attend a U.S. college or university and want to improve their academic skills or advance in their career. The instructors who teach NUI s English language programs are thoroughly prepared to help students conquer the challenges of learning a new language and culture. Over the last year and in response to student feedback, NUI began offering Business English, Accent Reduction, Academic Preparation, Conversation and American Culture. NUI also continued to offer a University Preparation Program and a TOEFL Preparation Workshop. NUI manages National University s Online Information Centers outside of California. NUI is in a unique position to meet the emerging needs of students around the globe. In response to demand for multilingual professionals, NUI offers language and cultural awareness programs. The programs available as certificates or seminars promote and provide increased understanding of multiculturalism and languages. NUI s foreign language programs fit the schedule of busy professionals, offering students the option of self-paced seminars or certificate courses. Interactive software optimizes the learning experience, and the programs follow an accelerated pace, allowing students to finish more quickly so they can take advantage of their new skills.

The six-week intensive Persian language program is open to students in grades K-16, and qualified students can earn high school credit for successfully completing the program. NUVHS has also developed a continuing education program geared toward adult learners, providing them with the opportunity to obtain an important high school diploma. During the last academic year NUVHS recorded strong growth in student admissions and enrollments. More than 1,501 new students enrolled in the last year, raising the school s total student number to 2,294 an increase of more than 70 percent over the previous year. NUVHS national presence also continues to increase with the school providing service to online students in more than 37 states. The continued growth is a result of the school s ongoing commitment to fostering successful relationships with schools and districts, through which NUVHS provides supplemental online coursework. These partnerships have also greatly expanded NUVHS part-time student enrollment. NUVHS increased transfer agreements to more than 440 schools and districts across 41 California counties and in 37 other states. 35 65 WESTMED COLLEGE As the U.S. population continues to grow and age, so has the need for the healthcare industry to fill skilled, hands-on positions in the critical fields of licensed vocational nursing (LVN), paramedic, and emergency medical technician (EMT). Through classroom, field, and independent instruction guided by experienced instructors, WestMed College provides students with the skills necessary to pursue exciting and stable careers in these three critical areas of need. Since 1991, WestMed College has been preparing students for careers in allied health by providing quality, affordable training and non-degree education programs. WestMed s format is designed to accommodate working students by offering convenient schedules and online resources that provide students with unprecedented focus and flexibility to learn more effectively while balancing life s demands. WestMed nursing students are provided with the education and training they need for a career as a licensed vocational nurse. WestMed s vocational nursing graduates are trained to become ethical and technical professionals capable of taking the California State Examination for Vocational Nurses. An increasing proportion of sophisticated procedures, which once were performed only in hospitals, are being performed in physicians offices and in outpatient care centers, such as ambulatory surgical and emergency medical centers, due largely to advances in technology. Consequently, employment of licensed vocational nurses is projected to grow faster than average in these sectors as healthcare expands outside the traditional hospital setting. Since becoming an affiliate of the National University System in 2007, WestMed College has seen a continuous expansion of its locations and improvement of its programs. WestMed College prepares students for careers in allied health by providing quality, affordable training and non-degree education programs. Similar to vocational nurses, first-responders, especially paramedics, also are in high demand. Fire departments, ambulance companies, and hospitals are looking for dedicated men and women interested in a rewarding career. Students in WestMed s comprehensive paramedic program learn in both the classroom and in the field as they prepare to apply for state licensure. Upon successful completion of all phases of training, students are awarded a completion certificate, allowing them to apply for National Registry Certification and subsequent state licensure as a paramedic. WestMed s paramedic program meets or exceeds the requirements set forth in the State of California and Safety Code, Title 22, and conforms to the National Standard Paramedic Curriculum formulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

36 67 WestMed College opened a new location in Costa Mesa in 2010, and future plans include a campus in Fresno. Taught by experienced instructors in the field of emergency medicine and services, WestMed s Emergency Medical Technician program offers students the classroom and hands-on training they need to be eligible for National Certification. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment for paramedics and EMTs is projected to grow faster than average. Population growth and urbanization will increase the demand for full-time paid EMTs and paramedics. In addition, a large segment of the population the aging baby boomers will further spur demand for emergency medical services, as they become more likely to have medical emergencies. Since becoming an affiliate of the National University System in 2007, WestMed College has seen a continuous expansion of its locations and improvement of its programs. Originally based in San Jose with a satellite location near Merced, WestMed has since moved into National University s campus in San Jose and a new location in Merced. The growth trend will continue in 2010 with WestMed seeking expansion into Southern California. In addition to National University, WestMed will be occupying the joint campus in Costa Mesa with faculty and staff from fellow System affiliate John F. Kennedy University, which also will have its first-ever Southern California presence. Future plans also include a location for WestMed at National University s campus in Fresno, which will serve to strengthen the College s presence in California s vibrant Central Valley. COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND SERVICE WestMed students and staff spend considerable time and effort in service to their communities. Vocational Nursing students in Merced volunteered for the University of California, Merced s flu clinic, assisted at Castle Community Hospital s flu clinic, and demonstrated medical and surgical skills at a recent Merced High School Career Day. In San Jose, students in WestMed s Emergency Medical Technician program installed fire alarms in local community mobile home parks. WestMed seeks to improve student success by offering many tools to preparedness. The College has scheduled four courses to be offered to current students, graduates, and the public. These courses offer instruction in the areas of business writing, drafting résumés, interviewing, and using the Internet in the job search process. In an effort to increase community involvement and awareness, Community Health Fairs have been scheduled for Merced and San Jose to highlight the expertise of the College s Vocational Nursing and Paramedic programs. The Department of Homeland Security contacted WestMed to offer a two-day training program on Weapons of Mass Destruction in October. The program was offered to professionals in the fields of Emergency Medical Services, Law Enforcement, and Fire Service Agencies. The event was fully funded by the federal government. WestMed emphasized the importance of faculty, staff, students, and community members enhancing knowledge and preparedness in emergency scenarios. WESTMED S EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN PROGRAM OFFERS STUDENTS THE CLASSROOM AND HANDS-ON TRAINING THEY NEED TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR NATIONAL CERTIFICATION. Two San Jose Area fire departments have requested EMT-B training for their respective fire houses. Current EMT faculty have agreed to teach the courses on a volunteer basis, and the college is preparing a financial proposal to provide discounted tuition to the organizations. WestMed College s EMT graduates volunteer as first responders at Little League games, broadening community awareness of WestMed s EMT programs. WestMed students and staff spend considerable time and effort in service to their communities.

38 71 CENTER FOR INTEGRATIVE HEALTH Since its inception, the National University System has remained dedicated to finding new and innovative ways to share the most up-to-date information related to how people can live longer and healthier lives. Over the years, this commitment has taken many forms, including: health and wellness programs for employees; health-focused academic programs at numerous System affiliates; the introduction of the School of Health and Human Services at National University; and the creation of the Center for Integrative Health and its electronic magazine, ithrive. The vision for the National University System Center for Integrative Health is clear: improving the quality of health and wellness care in the United States by providing education to individuals about integrative health and to help people lead healthier lives. This vision took on its newest and most robust form yet when the Center launched the Integrative Health Review website in September. In 2010, the Center for Integrative Health launched Integrative Health Review, a free online resource dedicated to disseminating information about how people can live longer, healthier lives. Under the direction of Chancellor Jerry C. Lee, who has long been the driving force behind the System s health-focused offerings, Integrative Health Review is a collection point for articles, experts corner and subject-specific videos, forums, interactive tools and resources, and RSS feeds from a diverse range of expert contributors and renowned health organizations. Integrative Health Review explores numerous topics, including integrative health, alternative medicine, eating and nutrition, exercise and lifestyle, workplace wellness, the human body, peak performance, preventive medicine, sports medicine, stress management, vitamins and supplements, and weight control. An entire section of the site is devoted to disease prevention and management, with more than 20 distinct diseases covered. Since its inception, the National University System has remained dedicated to finding new and innovative ways to share the most up-to-date information related to how people can live longer and healthier lives.
