3 Storyline Since 1996 and 2002 respectively, the United States and Canada conduct a systematic policy of repatriation of all foreign residents who have committed crimes on their soil. These range from violent crimes to simple convictions for driving while intoxicated or petty theft. Deported follows these North American offenders as they return to their homeland: Haiti, a country they do not know and a hostile land for them. Synopsis Through a series of portraits, this film gives voice to offenders (sentenced to penalties of varying severity), who, at the end of their prison sentence in North America are deported to their home country, Haiti. Back in Port- au- Prince, a city they left as children, a new life begins for these "Americans" in an environment that is both completely unfamiliar and quite hostile. Caribbean and Latin American countries are experiencing the heavy burden associated with the forced "migration" of a population unprepared for its return (with no family ties in their "home" country nor mastery of the Creole language) and lack the means to manage any sort of re- integration. The film is built around trips between Haiti, where the deported now reside (and were followed for three years), and North America where their families, who know nothing of their loved one's new life, are torn with anxiety, blame and regret. After a one- year respite following the deadly earthquake of January 12, 2010, the deportations resumed in January /6

4 Biography Directors Rachèle Magloire Co- director /Producer Born in Port- au Prince, Haiti, Rachèle Magloire was raised in Montreal, Quebec where she graduated in Communications in Back to Haiti the same year, she worked as a reporter for the privately owned Télé Haiti and wrote for Haîti en Marche, a weekly published in Miami. In 1991 she had a brief stunt at Haiti National Television as chief editor and then news director. From 1991 to 1995, Rachèle Magloire was a stringer for the Montreal dailies La Presse and Le Devoir and collaborated to Le Point, a Radio Canada TV magazine. Since 1995, she directs documentaries within Fanal Productions, an audiovisual production company founded with director of photography and director Carl Lafontant. From January 2002 to January 2004, she worked in The Democratic Republic of Congo for Radio Okapi, a national radio network founded by the UN in collaboration with Fondation Hirondelle for Freedom of Speech. In February 2004, she is back in Haiti and resumes her work as director/producer with Fanal Productions. In addition, she is involved with Sinema Anba Zetwal/ Cinema Under the Stars, a dynamic audiovisual mobile structure that screens movies and social messages to large audiences all over the country. By the end of 2006 she engaged with Chantal Regnault in the direction of Deported, a documentary about Haitian legal immigrants with a criminal record being deported from the US to their homeland. In 2011, Vues D Afrique, a Montreal based Film Festival, awarded Rachèle and her sister Laurence Magloire, the CIRTEF Prize for services rendered to humanity. Chantal Regnault Author/ Co- director Born in France, Chantal Regnault moved to the United States in 1971 and settled in New York City where she completed her academic education at New York University. Primarily a photojournalist, her work has been published in numerous newspapers and magazines: The New York Times, The Village Voice, Libération, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, Aperture, Geo and Photo. She is associated with Getty Images and has exhibited her work in the United States, Europe and Haiti. It also belongs to the following collections, UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History, Los Angeles; The William Benton Museum of Arts, University of Connecticut; Museum fur Kunst Geschichte, Fribourg; La Maison Européenne de la Photo, Paris. She frequently visited Haiti between 1979 and 1983 and in 1993 established a residence there. Besides pursuing her photographic work, she has since then steadily collaborated with journalists from the international written and audiovisual press. Familiarized with the film medium, she worked in the preparation and production of a dozen documentaries, among those, Haiti, la fin des chimères by Charles Najman (2004); In the Mirror of Maya Deren by Martina Kudlàcek (2001) and a BBC series Zombies of Haiti (1996). By the end of 2006, she engaged with Rachèle Magloire in the direction of Deported, a documentary about Haitian legal immigrants with a criminal record being deported from the US to their homeland. 4/6
