1 News That RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES MARSHFIELD Spring 2013 BOARD OF DIRECTORS President Carol Adler Vice-President Pamela Acker Secretary Carol Willfahrt Treasurer Ron Fish Directors Patti Shafto-Carlson Heidi Giese Joe Dolezal Liz Kracht Lisa Roy Kevin Krautkramer Adrienne Cruz, MD Financial Advisor Jim Bartelt HOUSE STAFF House Director Sandra Zygarlicke Evening Managers Pat Passo Georgi Sartain Cindy Marks Kim Krueger Weekend Managers Marilyn McCann Mabel Luepke Patti Hildebrandt Ginger Orth Housekeeping Valorie Scottberg Dear Friends, Love Built The Ronald McDonald House Charities mission is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children. From the Director The Ronald McDonald House is a warm smile from a friendly volunteer, a home-cooked meal after a busy day at the hospital, a restful night s sleep in a caring environment and families helping each other through one of the toughest times in their lives. Costly medical bills, siblings back home and keeping up with their jobs are challenges that push families to the breaking point. Lengths of stay can vary from one night to several months, and although there is a nominal charge of $5 a night, many families are unable to pay due to the financial burden they are facing. This is why it is heartwarming to know that a caring community is there to guarantee that the Ronald McDonald House of will be here for those families who depend on us during one of life s most stressful and challenging of times. Sincerely, Sandra Zygarlicke, House Director

2 Book of Hope Book of Hope The impact of your support is revealed in the words of our guest families who have given us permission to share their stories. A thought, a prayer, an encouraging word A funny story that you have heard Anything to lighten the load or gloom Of the next family to stay in this room Just write it here so they may look And see it in this little book. Please leave this book here for the next family to read and add to Hello my name is Faith Dorsett and my 16 year old daughter, Jasmine was diagnosed with a choledochel cyst of her liver, biliary tree and reaching to her pancreas on October 9, This is a congenital condition that is formed in-utero as a fetus and is usually detected with prenatal ultrasound, but it is sometimes missed. Well, we were missed. At the time of diagnosis her cyst was 10 cm and crushing her gall bladder and portal vein. Thankfully, when I brought her to the ER for what I assumed was stomach flu, the doctor ordered a CAT scan and discovered the cyst. We then came to Saint Joseph s Children s Hospital for surgery. We have been here for 4 days but, at the RMH for 2, and have about 7 to go. My friend is the one that mentioned RMH to me. I had not considered it as an option. I imagined it was only for people with young children. I soon found out RMH cares for all children and their families. It doesn t matter what the age your child; nothing compares to the heartache you feel watching your child in pain EVER. Some days I don t know if I can bare it, and then I realize that when my child s body is at her weakest, her will is strongest. She strengthens my soul and carries my heart in her hand. This diagnosis is a life long one, but it will not burden us we won t be weighed down by it, because our Faith, Love, and Courage lift us up. Peace Love Faith Friendship, WI December 2012 I am here because my very stubborn 15-year old son thought that he could jump out of a moving vehicle. He was riding in a van with some friends, had an argument with the driver, and while the driver was turning around in a driveway, my son jumped out. According to his friends, he landed on his feet, but then slipped on an icy patch and fell with all of his weight onto the back of his head. The impact caused a seizure. He was taken by ambulance to the Mayo Clinic in Barron where he was intubated and sedated before being flown via med chopper to Luther/Mayo in Eau Claire. I arrived onto the accident scene as they were loading him into the ambulance, but they said I couldn t ride with him. They let me see him for a minute in Barron but told me I also couldn t ride in the helicopter with him. Both drives were the longest of my life. He spent a week in Eau Claire with massive bleeding inside his brain, and a sizeable mass of blood between his brain and skull, bleeding on the outside of his skull, and his skull was cracked. Doctors said he was extremely lucky. They said his injury and its results were comparable to a stroke. For the whole week in Eau Claire and the first few days here, he couldn t use or move his left arm or hand. Thankfully, now that he is here in receiving extensive rehabs, he has nearly regained full use of that arm and hand and is recovering nicely and quickly. He has now been here in for a week tomorrow, so it has been an amazing blessing to be able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House for little money and be with my son. If you are here, I am certain that your faith and strength are being challenged. However, you will be well-cared for here, and others in the house are going through a similar ordeal. Bless this house and bless you. Lynn Hancock Barron,WI

4 Board News Ronald McDonald House Charities of, Inc. is the corporation responsible for overseeing the operation of the Ronald McDonald House, the first House in Wisconsin. The Board of Directors is comprised of representatives from the central Wisconsin area, the medical complex, and McDonald s restaurant. Two new directors joined the board this past year: Adrienne Cruz, MD My husband and I have lived in Wisconsin for 17 years. In 2000 I graduated from UW Madison School of Medicine. As a medical student I rotated several times at the Clinic making a strong impression. I applied to complete my training here as a pediatric resident in 2000, confident that I would be working under some exceptional Pediatricians in a great community. I was very honored to be offered a part in Ronald McDonald House as it provides so much comfort to families. I look forward to providing any assistance that I can for such a wonderful organization. Kevin Krautkramer Hello, my name is Kevin Krautkramer, but people just call me Krauty. I was somewhat familiar with the Ronald McDonald House, but I really came to know how important their mission is through working with Sandra Zygarlicke, House Director and my good friend Tom Christensen; who after losing a brother to cancer founded a fundraiser called OPEN SEASON on Krauty, Ronald McDonald, Karlyn CANCER. Through his generosity, all proceeds raised are donated to the Ronald McDonald House. I am so touched and honored to be working with the giving and compassionate people involved in this organization. My vision and hope for the Ronald McDonald House is to see it continue helping families and individuals through difficult times that we, unfortunately, may face at some point in our lives. I hope I can make a difference. I ask everyone to please donate your time or money to the Ronald McDonald House. Collectively our efforts HELP so many. Thanks, Krauty

5 Aluminum Tab/Recycling Program Who can participate? People of all ages can participate in supporting the Ronald McDonald House by collecting aluminum tabs. Many schools support this project because it is easy and helps teach valuable math and recycling lessons. Families, churches, service organizations and businesses also participate as a way to show their support of the Ronald McDonald House and the families we serve. How do you get started? It's easy. There is no registration required. Simply remove the tab from the aluminum can and put them in your favorite collection container. We accept all kinds of containers and enjoy seeing the creative ways that people decorate their boxes, jugs and other tab collection containers. We do have 4-inch stickers you may request from us to place on your public collection containers. Where do I drop off my collected aluminum tabs? This House Office is open from 8 AM-9 PM daily. You can bring small amounts of tabs to the front desk inside the House, or you can drop off large amounts of them at 1st Choice Recycling in Spencer. You can also take them to your local recycler, cash them in, and send us the check from your recycling efforts. If possible, please bring your aluminum tabs in closed boxes, zip lock or sealed bags or closed WIDEmouth containers. Please avoid gallon milk jugs, water bottles and other narrow-necked containers, as they make the recycling process time-consuming and difficult. Are can tabs better to recycle than cans? No. Tabs are easier to collect and, because we have limited space at the Ronald McDonald House, they are easier to store. However, their value is no different to a recycler than the rest of the can. It's all the same aluminum. 1,280 pop tabs = 1 pound of metal In 2012, $9, was donated from your recycling efforts. Thank you!
