Formal learning, Non-formal learning Informal learning Schools are designed for formal learning We learn in three ways (Lombardo & Eichinger 1996) 10 % Passive learning 20 % Active, reflective 70 % Learning by doing Active collaborative learning needs new solutions Sound Corridors are learning environments 5-10 min cv cv Future Learning Environment - Olli Niemi 16
Our best demo: UBIKO Ubiquitous learning University of Oulu, training school Multi space, interactive learning, self regulated learning, team teaching, use of ICT Oulu UBIKO demo was one of the finalist of The EAPRIL Best Research & Practice Project Award. EAPRIL =European Association for Practitioner Research on Improving Learning Future Learning Environment - Olli Niemi 17
Future UBIQO classroom in Oulu University Multi space, interactive learning, self regulated, team teaching, use of ICT Teacher can start the lesson in front of the classroom After the start the pupils spread out in the classroom and corridor to work in groups The most popular place is the glass box in the corridor Soft floor carpet and acoustic ceiling create a good acoustic environment Movable cupboards can be used to create quiet study corners Sliding doors are finally open and make teaching in teams possible Classroom: Flexible, multiplace private space Team corridor: Semi privat, Independet studies Future Learning Environment - Olli Niemi 18
New inspiring, collaborative learning and team teaching is possible because of the new, flexible spaces The lesson starts together Smart board Pictures: Heikki Kontturi / OY, UBIKO And continues in smaller study groups If needed, the teacher can support Most popular place Future Learning Environment - Olli Niemi 19
Teacher's multi place working environment From moveable bookshelves you can make safe study corners Also shared moments are easy to arrange, Teachers table is movable Teacher can have his own corner Future Learning Environment - Olli Niemi 20
From tables you can form different kind of settings Future Learning Environment - Olli Niemi 21
From movable auditoriums it is easy to arrange even large happenings Some boys have noticed: Inside the box it is easy concentrate Future Learning Environment - Olli Niemi 22
The ship in the lobby is multifunctional A place for wrestling and relaxing It is a stage or studying It very common to work on the floor Future Learning Environment - Olli Niemi 23

Whiteboard is better than Smart board Caveman's innovation Every student has his own whiteboard Students retain information at a higher level when actively engaged in their own learning. Passive learning takes a back seat. Transitions from standup to sit down and the freedom to move and engage is required in all active learning settings Steelcasen Verb classroom Source: Steelcase Future Learning Environment - Olli Niemi 25
Designed for Team-based Learning Group tables and Show and Tell Technology Polling (audience response system) Dori and Belcher (2004) performance of physics students taught in media rich TEAL classrooms significantly better than control groups Improved conceptual understanding Improved course performance The technology-rich engagement atmosphere and the group interactions enabled the high achievers to blossom while teaching their peers. This setting also facilitated upward mobility of the intermediate and low achievers, thereby reducing failure rate and obtaining overall better results.
