3 Overall Survey: How do I make filling out this survey easier? The easiest way to fill out this survey is to use the "Printable Worksheet" found at The "Printable Worksheet" is created directly from this survey and will allow you to gather all of your responses before starting the online survey. What time frame does this survey cover? Please only include data is for Fall 2014 through Summer Which students should be included in the survey? Include only U.S. citizens and permanent residents* enrolled for a degree (and/or General Education students at community colleges) at your institution's U.S. campus who received academic credit for study abroad, regardless of who sponsored the program (your institution, another institution or an outside organization), or who awarded the initial credit.** Include your institution s students who went on another institution s or organization s study abroad programs and received transfer credit toward their degree from your institution, even if you don t have detailed breakdowns for all sections of the survey. *With the exception of Question 1B, which asks for separate data on international students **With the exception of Question 10, which asks for separate data on students engaged in non-credit education abroad. Which students should not be included in the survey? Do not include non-degree students, life-long learning students, continuing education students, or certificate students, since they are not degree-seeking students. Do not include students from other institutions or consortia who studied abroad on your institution s programs, to avoid double-counting. These students should be reported by their home institution. Do not include international students (those studying in the U.S. on non-immigrant, temporary visas) enrolled at your institution who received credit for study abroad - except for in question 1B. Do not include students who studied in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands or any other part of the U.S. Do not include internships or study programs that take place within the U.S., regardless of whether or not they are administered by your office. You will be able to save your responses and return to the survey at a later time if you are not able to complete the entire survey in one sitting. Please keep track of your Unit ID and password, as you will need them to re-enter the survey. When you click Save, the survey will automatically generate a unique link that you can use to easily log back into the survey. What are the auto-sums? The survey will automatically fill in the totals for each section. Please ensure that your total reported study abroad students is the same in each section, or you will receive an error message upon submission (please count students for whom you do not have detailed data in the "Do not know" row, so that the numbers add up in each section). What should I do if I do not know detailed information about the students? Please count students for whom you do not have detailed data in the "Do not know" row. Question 1A.: Total Number of U.S. Study Abroad Students How should I count U.S. students who studied abroad multiple times? Each student should only be counted once in this section, even if they studied abroad more than once during this time period. Should I count U.S. students that attended an orientation course abroad? Count only if the course included an academic, credit-bearing study abroad component to it. Should I count U.S. students that went on an overseas field trip? Count only if the overseas component was a required part of the course or if the trip itself was credit-bearing (e.g., if an additional unit of credit was awarded for participation, etc.). Should I count U.S. students that conducted dissertation research abroad? Count only if the student is registered specifically for a dissertation course and received credit for the research abroad.

5 Question 5: Major Field of Study What do I do if a student has a double or triple major? If a student has a double (or triple) major, count each major separately (e.g. a double major in French and Business would be counted once under 16 Foreign Languages, Literature and Linguistics and once under 52 Business, Management, Marketing and Related Support Services ). If you have students with more than one major, your total for this section will not add up to the total from Question 1A. What do I do if I cannot find the correct field of study? If you are unsure of the category for a particular major, include it in the Other Fields of Study text box. Then at the bottom, write in the field or study/major and how many students in this field studied abroad. What do I do if I do not know a student's field of study? If you do not know a student s field of study, count the students under CIP Code 97 - Unknown Field of Study. Question 6: Destinations Is there an easy way to find specific countries in this long list? Please use CTRL-F (CMD-F for Mac users) on your keyboard to find specific countries. Where should I classify students who studied in England, Scotland, or Northern Ireland? Please count students who studied in England, Scotland or Northern Ireland under "3290 United Kingdom." Where should I classify students who studied in the Gaza Strip or West Bank? Please count students who studied in the Gaza Strip or West Bank under "2443 Palestinian Territories." What should I do if the country I am looking for is not listed? If you had students that studied abroad in destinations that are not listed, count them under 9900 OTHER and specify the destination and number of students bottom of this page. What should I do if I do not know where the students studied? Please count students for whom you do not have detailed data under "9901 DO NOT KNOW"

6 Question 7: Duration of Study Abroad What is the difference between an academic year and two semesters? Students who participated in a single study abroad program or experience lasting one academic year should be counted under I. Academic Year. Students who participated in two separate semester-long programs should be counted twice under H. One Semester. For the long-term "K. Calendar Year" category, what calendar year should I use since this survey covers Fall 2014 through Summer 2015? If you had students that studied abroad for a calendar year (January-December), these students should be counted in the category of "K. Calendar Year." Students should only be counted in the year in which their program began, so they are not counted twice. Only students that began their calendar year of study in 2015 should be counted. Where should I include students with other durations of study abroad? Other durations of study abroad are any programs that do not fit into the categories listed, for example, a two-month medical rotation throughout the year. Please specify both the duration and the total number of students for each duration in the K Other" category and in the "Other Durations text box.
