1 Karana Line at a Glance Established on April 25, 1967, PT. KARANA LINE began with a staff of fewer than 20 members. At that time near-sea operations were limited to Japan, Taiwan and Singapore. In the late 80 s many Asian countries recovering from world inflation, including Japan, Taiwan, and Indonesia, strived to re-establish their trade relations with the European and American continents. PT. KARANA LINE viewed this time as a great opportunity to expand its business, and targeted the Middle East as its next destination. It is predicted that by the year 2030 Indonesia will be ranked the world s 7th biggest economy, and South East Asia, a region of 650 million people in which Indonesia is the largest economy, will be the new Europe of Asia. Whatever the eventual ranking, the development of the economy and of trade will be massive. To support that growth in this the largest archipelago in the world, shipping services of all kinds will need to grow strongly and quickly. PT. 4 Ship Owning Karana Line have had experience of owning and operating 9 vessels. At present, Karana Line owns and operates one cargo vessel. It plans to purchase few more vessels in the near future. As Indonesia rapidly develops it s economy the Chartering requirements of both Indonesian importers and exporters is expected to increase substantially. This is not just an increase in activity, but a shift in the way trade is conducted. The experience of other countries going through similar economic development shows that companies will elect to control their own shipping requirements, be-it through Ship-Owning or Chartering. 9 Logistic - Demand on Services A great deal has been written about the dramatic increase in consumer spending in Indonesia, partly resulting from the growth of a large middle class in this a nation of 250 million people. This growth means the provision of Logistical services will also need to expand to meet demand services in warehousing, distribution, forwarding, agency, and computer services which track and inform customers, will all come under pressure.
