Four lecture; one lab. Courses in the core curriculum have been identified as Writing Across the Curriculum courses. Suggested minimum standards for the Writing Across the Curriculum component are as follows: 1. The writing assignments should total words. For example, a single report which is 1500 words in length could fulfill the requirement, or a series of essay questions and short papers (example: four -375 word assignments) which total 1500 words could meet the requirement. 2. The writing component will represent at least 10% of a student s final grade in the course.

Primary goal: To communicate in Spanish (given a highly sympathetic audience) at a beginning survival level of proficiency as defined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL) and in compliance with the basic communication competencies set for Spanish 101 by the Arizona Languages Articulation Task Force (LATF) and NAU (Northern Arizona University) 2. Communicate in Spanish by: A. Responding to formulaic questions on familiar material, utilizing and recognizing frequently used expressions to describe self and others, writing simple sentences using formulaic expressions and learned vocabulary in the writing system of the Spanish language and formulating questions to satisfy basic needs. 3. Identify, recognize and use basic grammatical features of Spanish with a minimum of 70 percent accuracy in the areas of grammar, vocabulary, verb tense conjugations and cultural knowledge.
