1 Overview This sub-discipline is about the competencies required to manage the capacity of IT/technology services, systems and assets that support an organisation. Capacity management covers a range of activities that ensure that current and future business needs are met by resources in the most effective manner; that current performance of the systems and services and assets are optimised and that changes to can be justified, planned and implemented in advance of the expected changes to business demand. Typical capacity management activities may include: monitoring of IT/technology throughput and performance analysing measurement data and information assessing and modelling the impact of new services on existing tuning and balancing the performance of existing capacity future workload planning assessment of demand for IT/technology resources planning how and when to introduce new Capacity management activities take place as part of the day-to-day management of IT/technology systems, services and assets. They are also required during the development lifecycle of new and/or enhanced IT/technology systems, services and assets. ESKITP7074 1
2 Performance criteria You must be able to: Manage and implement capacity management activities P1 Correctly implement and maintain the plan(s) and any relevant metrics to measure the performance of IT/technology capacity, as directed P2 Effectively manage the routine/ongoing provision of IT/technology capacity to meet demand, ensuring change control mechanisms are followed correctly, where required P3 Routinely tune and balance the performance of existing IT/technology capacity, analysing and reporting the impact of action taken, as directed and in line with procedures# ESKITP7074 2
3 Knowledge and understanding You need to know and understand: K1 Identify and select the results from monitoring utilisation K2 Verify the accuracy, currency, completeness and relevance of information used during capacity management activities K3 Use and apply: K3.1 The metrics to measure the performance of K3.2 The procedures, tools and techniques to monitor the quality and effectiveness of capacity management activities and their deliverables K4 Record and store: K4.1 the procedures, tools and techniques to monitor the quality and effectiveness of capacity management activities and their deliverables K4.2 change requests that may need to be raised for capacity upgrades K4.3 The procedures, tools, techniques and plans to monitor the alignment of capacity management activities and their deliverables with any relevant legislation, regulations and external standards K4.4 The metrics that are used to measure the performance of K4.5 The results from monitoring the quality and effectiveness of capacity management activities and their deliverables K4.6 Routine and intermittent spikes, peaks and troughs in the utilisation of K4.7 the progress of any authorised capacity changes K5 Analyse and interpret all relevant information about the throughput and performance of current K6 Analyse the findings from: K6.1 Monitoring utilisation K6.2 The findings from tuning and balancing activities on IT/technology capacity management K6.3 The procedures, tools, techniques and plans to monitor the alignment of capacity management activities and their deliverables with any relevant legislation, regulations and external standards K6.4 the metrics that are used to measure the performance of IT/technology capacity K6.5 the results from monitoring the quality and effectiveness of capacity management activities and their deliverables K7 Implement and maintain metrics to measure the performance of K8 Report: K8.1 the results from tuning and balancing activities on IT/technology capacity/resources K8.2 routine and intermittent spikes, peaks and troughs in the utilisation of K8.3 the progress of any authorised capacity changes K9 Analyse and interpret all relevant information about the throughput and performance of current K9.1 Analyse the findings from: K9.2 monitoring utilisation the findings from tuning and balancing activities on ESKITP7074 3
4 K10 Competent performance requires Understanding ( U) of: K10.1 What is involved in the monitoring of IT/technology throughput and performance K10.2 Why capacity plans need to be regularly reviewed and revised K10.3 The importance of: K10.4 metrics to measure the performance of capacity management activities K10.5 verifying the accuracy, currency, completeness and relevance of information used during capacity management activities K11 The need for monitoring of: K11.1 the quality and effectiveness of capacity management activities K11.2 the alignment of capacity management activities and their deliverables with business needs, service operation objectives and service strategy K12 The procedures, tools and techniques that can be used to monitor: K12.1 the alignment of capacity management activities and their deliverables with business needs, service operation objectives and service strategy K12.2 the quality and effectiveness of capacity management activities and their deliverables K13 Competence ( ): Assess and propose future capacity management provision requirements This competence will be demonstrated by the following Performance Criteria ( C): K14 Correctly model and forecast the impact of new services on existing K14.1 Accurately conduct future workload planning on, as directed K14.2 Correctly consider when may need to be upgraded and what type of upgrades to consider, making accurate assessments of the associated costs as directed K14.3 Produce clear and concise justification for the acquisition of incremental capacity where required, using metrics about performance, throughput and future demand to support any proposals and plans K14.4 Clearly present specific and timely proposals and plans for upgrades to relevant people for assessment and review Competent performance requires Knowledge ( K) of how to: K15 Identify and select: K15.1 lessons learned from previous capacity management activities and experiences K15.2 when to consider upgrades K15.3 what type of /resource upgrades to consider K15.4 when and how change, configuration and release management procedures may be required to introduce new K15.5 when and how to source, use and apply best practice in capacity management K16 Source, gather and collate: K16.1 information in order to cost and plan capacity upgrades K16.2 best practice in capacity management activities ESKITP7074 4
