We will be holding the event on the synthetic grassed oval near the school assembly hall from 5.00pm to 6.30pm. Bring a rug or chairs and your picnic dinner and we will have areas marked with grade levels. The students will be able to paint a large puzzle piece which will be hung on the hall wall in the coming weeks. This will symbolise each person is part of our Glenferrie a community of learners. We look forward to seeing you on Friday. Pupil free day Teachers worked all day Monday, in teams, planning the teaching and learning for the term. All students had input into the Inquiry unit Community. The students will be investigating what a community is, at their level of understanding. The literacy and numeracy is planned with each students needs catered for. Students work with the teacher in small groups as needed and with other students when they can drive their own learning. The students are at the centre of all our planning. Year 5/6 camp to Canberra The students, teachers and parent volunteers are heading off to Canberra on Monday 23 rd February for a week. The students are asked to be at school between 7.00am and 7.30am so they can hand in medication and load bags etc. The students are exploring Canberra and will be visiting many interesting places. Thank you to the teachers and parents who are attending. Camp is an extra curricula activity which can only happen with dedicated staff and willing parents. Dance classes and end of term Disco Classes in year 1 to 6 are participating in weekly dance classes. Sally and Shannon are working with the students to learn dance moves. On Wednesday 25 th March we will be holding a Disco. Prep students may attend if they wish. The disco will be free and the times are Prep to year 2; 6.00pm 7.00pm and years 3 to 6; 7.00pm to 8.00pm. The windows will be blacked out at the request of the students. We ask parents to drop their child off and return to pick them up from the aftercare area adjacent to the hall. We will be asking for parent volunteers to help supervise closer to the time. Speaking with teachers Please make an appointment to speak to your child s teachers if you have information to pass on about your child s needs. Teachers addresses were included in last week s Gazette for you to contact them as you need. If you are working and would like to have a phone conversation it is a good idea to make an appointment so the teacher is available to chat.

2 Meet the Staff My name is Joanne Mejia and this year I am currently teaching Prep M at Glenferrie Primary School. I love being a Prep teacher here at GPS because I get to meet new families, learning from other teachers and students and seeing the growth in my students. I am newly engaged, living in Richmond with my fiance James and our ginger cat, Ninja. I come from a large family where both my grandparents had 9 children each. My family consists of my Mum, Dad and Sister Margarita. Some of my interests include dancing, working out, travelling, creating and tasting new foods, spending time with my family and friends. Part of my bucket list includes learning how to surf, learning another language, volunteering as a teacher overseas and completing a half marathon. One of my favourite places is Italy because of the beautiful sceneries and delicious flavours. My next travel destination is Jordan, Turkey and the UK. Come and say hello! Would be great to meet you! School Matters Class Reps The Parents and Friends Association (P&F) are looking for parents who would like to be representatives of their class for This would entail being a central point of contact between the (P&F) and other parents in your child s class; to keep the other parents of your class informed of what P&F events and activities are coming up and how parents can be involved. Class Reps also organise a few get-togethers for your class so they can get to know each other. (ie: a coffee morning, play in the park, dinner out ) If you have any questions ask or Sarah Gilder sarah@gilder.me. Thank you to those parents who have already offered to be class coordinators this year for PrepM, PrepR, PrepF, 1/2P, 1/2B, 1/2M and 3M. Contact List As the classes all change each year; we have to re-ask everyone to submit their details and approval for the contact list at the start of each new year. We are only permitted to distribute the Class List to those who have submitted the contact details of their children. The list can assist parents with organising school and social activities and to enable ready contact between parents as and when the need arises. Please note this is not intended as an emergency contact list, the school office carries emergency contact information. You can submit your details online by logging onto and entering the event code: R32NH. If you need a paper form to fill in this information; see the office for a copy and return it there once completed. If you have any issues with the Class Lists; ask or Sarah on sarah@gilder.me Icy Pole Fridays Icy Poles will be available for sale every Friday lunch time during Term cents per Icy Pole. Helpers wanted for one or more Fridays during term 1. If you can help with Icy pole sales from 12.45pm -1.10pm on Fridays please put your name on the roster at the office. You may wish to send money along in an envelope marked with your child s name on a Friday. 3 THE GPS GARDEN There will be a notice going home tomorrow Community Matters OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program Program Update Warm Greetings, OSH Club Community! Last week the children enjoyed our board game bonanza and lots of fun was had in the space playing chess, monopoly, hungry hippos and more. Some of the older children even enjoyed creating their own variations of games. Our Curriculum Day on Monday was very busy and the children spent the day playing games, arts and crafts, and participating in two cooking activities. For the rest of this week we are celebrating Chinese New Year. Our OSH Clubbers have created fans and posters that are displayed within the space. We are also celebrating with making cupcakes on Thursday, as the children have been requesting more cooking activities. We love hearing their suggestions and always look to honour child-initiated ideas. It is wonderful to continue to see some of our older children taking a lot of initiative and engaging in leadership of our younger OSH Clubbers. So many of our regulars are finding OSH Club to be a nurturing space and our helpers are assisting in making it a supportive and caring environment for children to spend their time in outside o school hours. Have a wonderful week! : ) Next Week s Activities Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Before Care Activities *Drawing *Handball *Pancakes *Helicopter skipping game *Paper plane flying *Indoor cricket *Recycle crafts *Leadership Development *Air hockey tournament *Magic leaf drawing After Care Activities *Leadership: setting up afternoon tea *Skipping contest *Leadership development: peer support *Drawing *Watering and weeding our garden *Making and flying paper planes *Air hockey tournament *Paper plane flying *Construction: recycled materials *Indoor cricket
