The purpose of this Directory, which has been produced on behalf of the East Sussex Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT), is to help professionals and individuals to find the relevant service to meet their special needs. The Directory is split into two geographic areas (for those services in Eastbourne, Wealden and Lewes, and Hastings and Rother) and a third section for countywide services. There are further sections on national services, useful websites, helplines and training. If you know the name of a service, then you can use the alphabetical index to find it. Alternatively, the subject index helps find all the services which provide a specific type of service. The information has been provided by the services and was correct at the time of going to print. While care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of information, we cannot accept responsibility for any errors or omissions. The inclusion of any service does not necessarily mean it has the endorsement of the DAAT. An up-to-date version can be found on the DAAT website: 4 5
4 How to Refer to Services Important Information Before making a referral to a service, please check the information provided concerning eligibility, age, catchment area and referral criteria. You should always contact the service to check that details have not changed since this Directory was published. TIER 4 Residential drug and alcohol misuse specific services These services are for individuals with a high level of need including inpatient drug and alcohol detoxification or stabilisation services, drug and alcohol residential rehabilitation units, and residential crisis intervention centres. Tier 4 services usually require a higher level of commitment from clients than is required by services in the lower tiers. They are rarely accessed by clients directly as referral is usually through tiers 2 and 3 or via community care assessment. Service Tiers The National Treatment Agency for the Treatment of Drug Misusers (NTA) has a national framework for the treatment of drug and alcohol misusers in England. This can be found on their website Services are defined within 4 Tiers: TIER 1 TIER 2 TIER 3 Non-substance misuse specific services requiring interface with drug and alcohol treatment These services work with a wide range of clients including drug and alcohol misusers but their purpose is not solely drug or alcohol treatment. They include primary care or general medical services, social workers, teachers, community pharmacists, probation officers, housing officers and homeless persons services. Open access drug and alcohol treatment services These services provide accessible drug and alcohol specialist services for a wide range of people referred from a variety of sources, including self referral. They include needle exchanges, drug and alcohol advice and information services, and planned support not delivered in the context of a care plan. They may also provide access to social work advice, childcare/parenting assessment and assessment of social care needs. Structured community-based drug treatment services These are provided solely for drug and alcohol misusers and include cognitive-behavioural therapy, motivational interventions, structured counselling, substitute prescribing programmes (including those described as low threshold community detoxification), or day-care provided either as a drug/alcohol-free programme or in addition to substitute prescribing. Community-based aftercare programmes for drug and alcohol misusers leaving residential rehabilitation or prison are also included. Access to Services Across East Sussex The gateway to adult drug treatment services in East Sussex is via the CRI Open Access Services based in Eastbourne and Hastings. For young people referral should be to the Under 19 Substance misuse Service. For adult alcohol problems initial contact should be with Action for Change. INITIAL REFERRAL SHOULD ALWAYS BE TO THESE SERVICES. They will carry out an initial assessment, the purpose of which is to help an individual explore their motivation to reduce their use of substances, help facilitate access to a range of appropriate services including Tier 3 substitute prescribing and offer ongoing support. Individuals using Tier 2 Open Access will also receive harm minimisation advice and be able to access needle exchange. The Tier 2 Open Access Services will also be able to arrange for assessments to be conducted in hospital and home settings for those unable to access the locality sites. Feedback about this Directory We hope you will find this Directory useful. If you have any comments or amendments to recommend for future editions, then please contact the editors on or or via [email protected] or [email protected] 6 7
