3 MUSIC AT RADFORD Music education at Radford College aims to instil a deep love of music in all students. It encourages each student to experience the joy of music, regardless of age or ability, as an integral part of the school curriculum. There is an emphasis on active participation, individual expression and knowledge and understanding of the musical elements. Music is an important element of the Radford community. It is an ingredient that both challenges and enriches students through performance and academic study. Music is a universal language that encompasses intellectual properties. However, it is the intrinsic value of music that is often neglected as a worthwhile pursuit. Music is a vehicle that enables the human spirit to flourish. It often gives a sense of well being, achievement, emotive connectedness and spiritual fulfilment. Radford College has an extensive and diverse Music Program. It offers students a broad musical experience by encompassing three pillars for successful music making. These pillars provide students with an educational experience that develops skills, knowledge, understanding and values. These pillars are: Classroom Music: Classroom music for Pre-Kinder to Year 8 is part of the core curriculum and classroom music as an elective for Years Classroom music focuses on developing sound perception, understanding of the musical elements and general musicianship. Classroom music is the foundation on which all music making is built. Instrumental Studies: There are two methods for instrumental studies lessons. These are Individual Lessons and the Beginner Instrumental Program (BIP). BIP is for entry level students in Year 5-7 who are learning a concert band instrument. Both individual lessons and BIP sessions are held weekly and conducted by visiting specialist instrumental tutors. These lessons build technical fluency, musical literacy and individual expression. Instrumental tuition is the practical application of knowledge and understanding built in classroom music. Co-curricular Music: Performance, production and theory groups conducted before or after school and at lunchtime. Students have the opportunity of joining instrumental and/or vocal ensembles, as well as production or theory groups. This is an important aspect of giving back to the school community and provides a crucial social dimension to music making. Each pillar supports and enhances the other two and are of equal importance in encouraging students to understand and enjoy music. The Music program at Radford strives to: Provide a developmentally appropriate and sequential introduction to the elements of music with an emphasis on creative music making Provide students with a wide range of quality musical experiences and opportunities in the classroom, cocurricular program and school community Develop individual student aural perception of sound by exploring the elements that make music Nurture individual student diversity and needs Foster opportunities for students to explore music as part of their life long learning This handbook contains further information about all aspects of the program and it is my hope that it will inform your decision making for your child s musical development. 5 CLASSROOM MUSIC In Music, students develop listening, literacy and musicianship skills through performance, composition and musicology. Students are introduced to a variety of traditional and contemporary music styles using the musical elements. They perform music individually on the instrument of their choice and use voice in class activities. Students create original compositions and arrangements using computer software and audio recording equipment. Students also have the opportunity to explore the social, historical and political context of a variety of musical styles. Years: Pre-Kinder - 6 Junior Music encourages each child to experience the joy of music regardless of age or ability. There is an emphasis on active participation, individual expression and the development of an understanding of musical concepts through singing, playing, movement, creating and listening. Students are taught by specialist Music teachers and have between 2 and 4 lessons per cycle, depending on their Year level. In Year 3, students participate in the Strings Program, giving them the opportunity to learn the violin, viola or cello. They are organised into small groups and are given specialist instruction for 30 minutes each week. This program is part of the overall classroom program and does not attract a participation fee. Year 7 & 8 Music: Australian Curriculum In Music, students develop listening, literacy and musicianship skills through performance, composition and musicology. Students are introduced to a variety of traditional and contemporary music styles using the musical elements. They perform music using the voice and a range of tuned percussion instruments and keyboards. Students create original compositions and have the opportunity to use computer notation software. Year 9 Australian Curriculum: Music In Music, students develop listening, literacy and musicianship skills through performance, composition and musicology. Students are introduced to a variety of traditional and contemporary music styles using the musical elements. They perform music individually and in ensembles on the instrument of their choice and use voice in a range of class activities. Students create original compositions and arrangements and have the opportunity to use computer notation and sequencing software. Semester 1 Musical Theatre How can music transport the listener through story? Years: MUSIC (T) - This course is designed for students who have a strong background in music. Throughout this course, students will engage in a range of high-level performance, composition and musicology tasks. This course is also designed for students who wish to pursue the study of music at a tertiary level. The course provides explicit instruction, combined with individual and group experiences and provides scope for students to study a variety of musical styles. Two years of continuous music study in Years 9 and 10 is a pre-requiste for (T) Music. MUSIC (A) - This course is designed for students who wish to pursue music as a recreational subject. The course offers the opportunity to combine units from different areas and these units will be selected based on student interest. The course aims to foster values that will encourage active participation in music, leading to a continuing interest in later life. For full details of Music (A) and Music (T) please refer to the Senior School Handbook. Recitals As part of the overall practical performance experience and assessment, recitals are scheduled in Semesters 1 and 2 for students in years 9-12 studying elective curricular music. 5

6 INSTRUMENTAL STUDIES LESSONS There are two options for participation in Instrumental Studies Lessons. These are individual lessons and the Beginner Instrumental Program (BIP). INDIVIDUAL LESSONS Visiting Instrumental Studies Tutors provide weekly half hour lessons for the following instruments/academic years. Years 3-4: String: cello, double bass, viola, violin and guitar Keyboard: Piano Vocal: Voice Years 5-7: String: cello, double bass, viola, violin and guitar Keyboard: Piano Vocal: Voice Wind and Brass instruments (Concert Band Instruments): Beginner Instrumental Program (BIP) is the starting point for Year 5-7 students on concert band instrument Concert Band Instruments include: bassoon, clarinet, double bass, euphonium, flute, French horn, oboe, percussion (includes drum kit), saxophone (alto, tenor, baritone), trombone, trumpet, tuba, bass clarinet. Years 8-12: String: cello, viola, violin and guitar Keyboard: piano Vocal: voice Wind and Brass instruments (Concert Band Instruments): bassoon, clarinet, double bass, euphonium, flute, french horn, oboe, percussion (includes drum kit), saxophone (alto, tenor, baritone), trombone, trumpet, tuba, bass clarinet. The Music Department arranges instrumental lessons and timetables teaching studios. The specific scheduling of lessons is made between the Instrumental Studies Tutor, the student and their parents/caregivers. Participation Requirements The majority of lessons for students in Years 3-10 take place during class time on a weekly basis. Students in Years 3-4 have their lessons in the Junior School and students in Years 5-12 have their lessons in the Performing Arts Centre. On occasions, there may be unavoidable cross over. Students in Years 3-4 have their lessons on a fortnightly rotational basis so as not to miss the same academic lesson. Students in Years 5-10 have their lessons on a Term rotational basis. Students in Years 11 and 12 are not permitted to have lessons during class time and are given priority for sessions before / after school and during lunchtime. Students having individual instrumental or voice lessons at the College are required to participate in at least one relevant co-curricular music group (e.g. if voice lessons then choir group; if saxophone lessons then concert band group). Students cannot have more than one half hour lesson per week during class time. Extended lessons and or additional lessons must not occur during class, tutor or assembly time. Recitals As part of the overall practical performance experience, recitals are scheduled in Semester 1 and 2. Dates for recitals are on the Performing Arts Calendar available on the Music Co-curricular Space on Radford Online. All students undertaking instrumental lessons at Radford are expected to take part in the recital program where appropriate. Tutors advise if it is appropriate for students to participate in recitals. Instrumental Studies Tutors All of the Tutors who provide Instrumental Studies Lessons at Radford College are professional musicians and are not employed by Radford College. Parents are advised that the Music Department acts only as an intermediary, and that there is a legal obligation associated with any Tuition Contract they enter into with their child s Tutor. 6

7 Reporting Reporting back to parents on a student s progress is an essential aspect of our Instrumental Studies Program. Reporting procedures include the following: A Radford College Instrumental Studies Lesson Diary is used by the Instrumental Tutor as a record of the lesson and as a means of communication with parents. It is also to be shown to the class teacher when leaving a class for an instrumental studies lesson. Semester 1 - Participation in our Recital Program and Co-curricular Concert Series Semester 2 - Instrumental Studies Tutor provides a written report. Enrolment and Pre-requisites Students in years 5-12 undertaking individual lessons at the College are expected to belong to at least one relevant co-curricular music group and participate in the Music Recital program, where appropriate. Students in their first year of individual lessons on an instrument will be placed in a suitable co-curricular group once a satisfactory standard is met. Students in years 3-4 undertaking individual lessons can participate in a suitable group at the discretion of the appropriate Director. Lessons are a full academic year commitment. For each new academic year both new students to the music program and continuing students need to complete the Instrumental Studies & Co-curricular Music Program Entry/Continuation Form (see Appendix). Terms and Conditions It is expected that all Individual Lessons Students meet the following requirements: Participation/Absence Procedures Students are issued with a Radford College Instrumental Studies Lesson Diary by their Tutor and must have this with them in order to be excused from class. Students leave class no earlier than 5 minutes before the start of their music lesson and return to class no later than 5 minutes of the lesson finishing and must show their classroom teacher their Radford College Instrumental Studies Lesson Diary. Students in Years 7-10 must sign in upon arrival and then sign out at the completion of their music lesson. This is an electronic log in method located at the Music Administration Office in the Performing Arts Centre. Students are not permitted to leave class for a music lesson when they have assessable tasks, exams or excursions scheduled. Because these are scheduled in advance, students are responsible for notifying their Tutor at least 48 hours in advance of their lesson. Students may have multiple/extended lessons each week, however, they cannot have more than one half hour lesson per week during class time. Year 11 & 12 students are not allowed to have their lessons during class, tutor or assembly times. They are however permitted to attend lessons during FLEX periods. Year 7-10 students are not allowed to have their lessons during tutor or assembly times. Year 3-6 students are not allowed to have their lessons during tutor or assembly times. If a lesson is not attended for any reason the fee is still applicable. The only circumstance under which a tutor will reschedule a lesson is when it coincides with a scheduled assessment task or other compulsory school event and the student has given at least 48 hours notice. If an Instrumental Tutor is unable to attend, every effort will be made to reschedule the lesson. If this is not possible, the fee for that lesson will be credited to the following term. Payment/Discontinuation Instrumental studies lesson charges are approximately $41 (ex.gst) per half hour. Lessons are based on a calendar year, paid for on a term-by-term basis, one term in advance and payable to the Tutor by the due date as indicated on issued Tutor Fee Accounts. If you decide not to proceed with pre-arranged lessons in 2016 you must advise the Music Administrator via as soon as possible and prior to signing the Tutor Contract. If you decide to withdraw your child from lessons after signing the Tutor Contract and at any other time throughout the academic year, notice must be provided in writing to the Instrumental Tutor and Head of Cocurricular Music and Instrumental Studies, no later than the end of week seven of the term prior to discontinuation. Failure to do so will result in the following term's fee being payable. 7

8 BEGINNER INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAM (BIP) The Beginner Instrumental Program (BIP) is designed for students in Years 5, 6 and 7 who would like to join a concert band but as yet, have not played a concert band instrument. It is comparable with the ACT Instrumental Music Program. At the commencement of the program, students take part in a BIP Introduction Session where they are given the opportunity to try concert band instruments. Students are then assigned an instrument based on the recommendation of a qualified tutor, instrument availability and future band needs. The BIP is a full academic year commitment. Students participating in the BIP have a group lesson once a week and the use of an instrument for the duration of their involvement. As the standard of play improves, students are then brought together to play as a group (Beginner Band). Beginner Instrumental Program instruments - bassoon, clarinet, double bass, euphonium, flute, French horn, oboe, percussion, saxophone (alto, tenor, baritone), trombone, trumpet and tuba. Please note that at Radford College, the BIP is the only avenue for beginner students in Years 5-7 to learn these instruments for the first time. Progression After BIP After completing the BIP program, students will be able to progress to instrumental lessons and the appropriate Concert Band for their playing level as determined through the continuing student audition process. This will usually be the Sousa Concert Band. Levy $360 per annum (charged to the student s account in two instalments of $180 each Semester) The levy covers lessons, instrument hire and music book. It supplements running costs for the program such as, purchasing music and instruments, copyright fees, paying specialist music tutors and conductors. Terms and Conditions It is expected that all members of the BIP meet the following requirements: Participation Attend all lessons and performances as scheduled. Arrive 5 minutes before the start of lesson. Bring music, instrument, Instrumental Studies Lesson Diary to each lesson. Practise instrument regularly at home. Consult with the relevant tutor should there be a clash with other co-curricular or family obligations. Provide written notice via to the Director of Bands of absence from a lesson, in advance when possible. Commit to the chosen group for the duration of a whole academic year. Levy Payment/Discontinuation Only in extenuating circumstances and after consultation with the Head of Co-curricular Music and Instrumental Studies can students discontinue BIP participation mid-year. Consult with and provide notice in writing to the Head of Co-curricular Music and Instrumental Studies before discontinuing BIP membership. Students who withdraw from the BIP mid semester are not entitled to a levy refund unless extenuating circumstances exist. Cancelled rehearsals From time to time rehearsals will be cancelled due to other school activities that take priority. Notification about these cancellations will be provided via , Radford Online and the Bulletin when time allows. 8

9 CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC PROGRAM A diverse variety of co-curricular music groups are offered at Radford. Throughout the year, groups participate in Eisteddfods, music festivals and school concerts. Groups also regularly provide musical support for community events, school functions and ceremonies. For rehearsal details please refer to the Music Rehearsal Schedule 2016 (Years 1-12), available on Radford Online. CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC GROUPS Co-curricular music groups at Radford are formed based upon industry standards for concert bands, string orchestras, choirs and various style ensembles and music production groups. At Radford, these groups are divided into musical instrument and style related categories. These are: Brass Woodwind and Percussion; Strings; Choirs; Keyboard; Ensembles; and Production and Theory. 10 Description of Co-curricular Music Groups Brass, Woodwind and Percussion Concert Bands: A concert band is a performing ensemble consisting of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Concert bands have the flexibility to cover many different genres of music making them engaging and exciting for students. Radford concert bands are all auditioned groups and musicians are strongly encouraged to take individual lessons for the selected instrument. Instruments bassoon, clarinet (B flat/bass), electric bass, euphonium, flute, French horn, oboe, percussion, saxophone (alto, tenor, baritone), trombone, trumpet and tuba Jazz Band: A jazz band is a musical ensemble that plays many different styles of jazz both vocal and instrumental. They include big bands and smaller groups such as trios or quartets. Jazz performers can play with personal interpretation and improvisation is encouraged. Instruments saxophone (alto, tenor, baritone), trombone, trumpet, electric bass, electric guitar, piano/keyboard, percussion, and drum kit Please note - The jazz program is an extension of the Concert Band Program. There is an expectation that students who want to play in a jazz band/ensemble are already a member of a concert band. Percussion Ensemble: A percussion ensemble is a musical ensemble consisting of tuned and non-tuned percussion instruments. Many styles of music are covered ranging from classical to contemporary. Instruments concert percussion, drum kit, auxiliary percussion and tuned percussion. All members of brass, woodwind and concert band groups are expected to practice repertoire regularly and will perform at significant college events and services throughout the year. Strings String Orchestras: A string orchestra is a group of bowed stringed instrumentalists playing five different parts together: Violin section, which is divided in to 1 st and 2 nd sections purely to allow for two different parts; viola section, cello section, and a double bass section (which sometimes doubles the cello part in a lower octave). String orchestras can play a wide variety of styles, from the traditional classical music, to more contemporary jazz/rock influenced pieces. Instruments violin, viola, cello and double bass Guitar Ensembles: A guitar ensemble is a group of guitarists playing together, sometimes with the addition of percussion or bass guitar, depending on the repertoire. Division of parts can be varied depending on how many musicians are in the ensemble. Usually there are two or more parts. Guitar ensembles can cover a wide range of music, from classical to contemporary. All members of strings groups groups are expected to practice repertoire regularly and will perform at significant college events and services throughout the year. Choirs Choirs are musical ensembles for singers. At Radford there are currently eight choirs. Two of these choirs are auditioned groups and the other six are open to students of all singing experiences and abilities. The emphasise is on fun and enjoyment and Radford choirs sing a wide range of styles and genres. Both Camerata and Vox are auditioned choirs and singers are strongly encouraged to undertake vocal lessons and must also belong to another Radford choir. Members of choirs are expected to practice repertoire regularly and will perform at significant college events and services throughout the year. 10

11 Ensembles Chamber: A Chamber Ensemble consists of a small group of players with usually only one player on each part. Traditionally, such a group could fit into a small palace chamber or room but today the music for chamber groups is wide and varied. At Radford we have a number of different chamber groups and these can change each year. Examples may include, but are not restricted, to String Quartets, Flute Ensembles, Wind Quintets, Piano Trios, Clarinet Choirs and Brass Ensembles. Students who are members of such groups are expected to practise their repertoire regularly and be available for ensemble performances. Instruments: violin, viola, cello, bass, piano, recorder, voice, clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone and tuba Rock/Pop: A rock/pop ensemble is a group of two or more players. There are usually vocals, guitars, keyboards (piano, electric piano, Hammond organ, synthesizer, etc.) and a rhythm section consisting of a bass guitar and drum kit. These groups may also include acoustic instruments that are amplified. Students who are members of such groups are expected to practice and develop repertoire and be available for performances. Instruments: Guitar (electric/acoustic), electric bass, drum kit, keyboard, voice Ensemble participants are expected to practice repertoire regularly and perform at scheduled events through the year. Production/Theory Theory: These sessions cover the theoretical elements of music and can be tailored to individual students standards. Composition: This is a group class that explores more traditional forms of music composition. It develops the students notation skills and can be tailored to individual students. Audio Production: Explores the possibilities of digital audio workstation (DAW) software such as Ableton Live and Pro Tools. Students develop their own works in the digital realm. Enrolment, Pre-requisites and Terms And Conditions Both new students to the music program and continuing students need to submit an enrolment form annually by completing the Enrolment/Continuation Form for Instrumental Studies & Co-curricular Music Program (Appendix 1). Students enrolled in a co-curricular music group are strongly encouraged to have individual lessons. Participation in music co-curricular groups is a full academic year commitment. A non-committal 2 week trial period at the commencement of joining a group is allowed, after which time a firm commitment is expected. Some co-curricular music groups require audition and others do not. Concert Bands / String Orchestras: Auditions are held during Term 4. Details about the audition date/time will be advertised in the school s communications tools such as the Bulletin and Radford Online. New students to the music program are required to attend an audition during the year prior to participation. (The date for this audition is available in the music performance calendar). Precision Percussion Ensemble / Jazz Ensembles / Little Big Band / Big Band / Camerata Choir: Auditions are held during Term 4. Details about the audition date/time will be advertised in the school s communications tools such as the Bulletin and Radford Online. New students to Radford please contact the Music Administrator. Vox Choir: Auditions for the Vox Choir continuing members will be held in Term 4 and at the beginning of Term 1 of each year for new students to the choir. 11

12 Terms and Conditions It is expected that all members of Co-curricular Music groups meet the following requirements: Participation/Absence Procedures Attend all rehearsals, performances and workshops as scheduled. This includes students in Years 11 and 12 who have rehearsals and performances scheduled after their academic classes and exams. Arrive at least 5 minutes before the start of rehearsals. Bring music, instrument, Radford College Instrumental Studies Lesson Diary and pencil to every rehearsal. Practise their instrument regularly at home. Consult with the relevant groups managers should there be a clash with other co-curricular activities or family obligations. Provide a written apology via to the group manager when absent from a rehearsal or performance. Commit to the chosen group for the duration of a whole academic year. Levy Payment/Discontinuation Only in extenuating circumstances and after consultation with the Head of Co-curricular Music and Instrumental Studies can students discontinue group membership mid-year. Notifice of discontinuation must then be provided in writing to the Head of Co-curricular Music and Instrumental Studies. Students who withdraw mid-semester are not entitled to a levy refund unless extenuating circumstances exist. Progression Through Groups Progression is subject to audition at the end of each year. On the recommendation of the relevant Director or Head of Co-curricular Music and Instrumental Studies, progression to the next band or orchestra may be considered in the course of the year under special circumstances. Students join the Sousa Concert Band after completing the Beginner Instrumental Program (BIP). Co-curricular Music Group Levy Levies supplement costs incurred in the running of the Co-curricular Music Program. These costs cover purchasing music and instruments, copyright fees, paying of specialist music tutors and conductors, entry into Eisteddfods and end of year functions. The levy does not cover costs such as transport and accommodation associated with tours. Co-curricular Music Group Levy $130 per semester for one co-curricular music group $185 per semester for two co-curricular music groups $240 per semester for three or more co-curricular music groups Keyboard Performers Program $50 per semester if this is the only co-curricular music group Students enrolled in Keyboard Performers Program as well as another co-curricular music group will be will be charged as per co-curricular music group levy. 12

13 PERFORMANCE UNIFORM The performance uniform is as outlined below. All group members are required to wear the specified uniform for each performance. Music Performance Uniform The Radford Music Performance shirt (available from the Uniform Shop), trousers, shoes and socks, all black in colour to be worn by: Concert Bands Jazz Bands String Orchestras Choirs (Camerata and Vox Choirs) Precision, Cross Rhythm and Velocity Percussion Ensembles Chamber Music Ensembles Radford School Uniform to be worn by the following groups at all concerts/performances: Beginner Band (Beginner Instrumental Program group) Choirs (Chorale, Choristers, Vocalettes, Songsters, Warblers, Class Notes Barbershop Choir) Hit Percussion Ensemble Little Strings Guitar Ensemble Rock and Pop (lunchtime) ensemble groups INSTRUMENT HIRE Radford College has a wide variety of instruments for hire to students during the first two years of their tuition. After the initial two years, students are encouraged to purchase their own instruments. Radford Music Staff will be happy to offer advice about suitable instruments and suppliers. The following instruments are available for hire (subject to demand): bassoon, clarinet, euphonium, flute, oboe, saxophone (alto, tenor, baritone), trombone, tuba, trumpet, cello, double bass and viola. Drum kits, guitars, keyboards and violins are NOT available for hire. Hire Application and Terms andconditions The Radford College Musical Instrument Hire Form found on the back of the 2016 Music Enrolment/Continuation form for Instrumental Studies and Co-curricular Music Program must be completed before an instrument is hired. There are specific terms and conditions related to instrument hire and these are clearly outlined on the hire form. Hiring of instruments is done through the office of the Music Administrator. Instruments are hired on a yearly basis and must be returned during Term 4 on the date advised by the Music Department. These dates will be dependent on end of year performances and instrument service requirements. Students wishing to re-hire an instrument for the following year will need to complete the Radford College Musical Instrument Hire Form. Instrument Hire Levy The levy for Instrument Hire is $115 per semester and included on the student s account each semester. 13

14 COMMUNICATION Music program opportunities and how to enrol is available in the music handbook and flyer. This information is available at all times and is renewed annually in Term 4 each year, for implementation in the next consecutive year. Information relating to the music program at Radford College is announced via the Bulletin, Radford Online, and at rehearsals. Information relating to co-curricular groups such as performances, expectations and uniform will be sent to group participants at the beginning of the year. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that they are aware of their relevant commitments. The current music performance calendar and rehearsal schedule can be accessed via Radford Online and should be regularly checked for amendments. Many insurance companies offer an extension of the usual household contents policy to cover items that are not always within the home. There are specialist companies that comprehensively insure musical instruments, such as those listed below: Marsh Pty Ltd 45 Pirie Street, Adelaide SA AON Insurance Brokers, Sydney While the instrument is at school, it should be kept in the instrument storeroom in the Performing Art Centre or in the student s own personal locker (Middle, High and Senior Schools) or classroom (Junior School Students). A label with the student s contact details should be affixed to the inside the instrument case. A ribbon or other identifying device should also be attached to the outside of the instrument case, as many of them are identical. PARENT/CAREGIVER DECLARATION instrument hire I agree to take full responsibility for the safe custody, care and maintenance of the above instrument while it is on hire. I undertake to return the instrument in good working order at the end of the period of hire.
