The Mission of the Department is to: Use music to further the Lord s work. Promote music that is virtuous, lovely, of good report and praiseworthy. Prepare music majors for successful music-related careers. Teach musical excellence as a model for the pursuit of excellence in life. Help students use their musical gifts to serve the Lord, their families, and their communities. The Department is housed in the Eliza R. Snow Center for the Performing Arts, a beautiful and well-equipped facility. The faculty and facilities provide a superior environment for the serious student of music. In addition, the Department offers a diversity of opportunities for the non-music major to develop musical skills. The BYU-Idaho Department of offers four types of degrees: Bachelor of Arts (687), Bachelor of al Arts (690), Bachelor of in Education (890) and Bachelor of in Performance (693). The Bachelor of Arts in degree (B.A.) is a liberal arts degree designed to give students a broad education with an emphasis in music. Students use this degree to prepare for career tracks requiring a broad education or for preparation for graduate studies in other areas such as medical, dental, law, business, or other professional studies. The Bachelor of al Arts (B.M.A.) provides a concentrated emphasis in music for students to pursue studies in string pedagogy, composition, and music history. The Bachelor of (B.M.) is the professional degree in music and is available with either education or performance emphases. Students interested in a Therapy degree should contact the Advising Office for assistance in planning options. therapy degrees are not offered at BYU-Idaho, but course planning is offered to assist students in transferring after two years to accredited music therapy programs. Ensembles BYU Idaho has outstanding orchestras, bands, and choirs (auditioned and non-auditioned) whose membership includes music majors and non-music majors. In addition to class requirements, fulltime music majors must register for an ensemble every semester. See for more information. Auditions Auditions for ensembles each semester are typically held one to two days before classes begin. Consult Department webpage for more details. Lessons Fifty-two music faculty provide training for both music majors and non-music majors. Information for Majors Major Status BYU Idaho Department of has an open enrollment policy for all freshmen and transfer students desiring to pursue a degree in music. All are initially considered Prospective Majors. Admission as a Major and clearance for subsequent courses is contingent upon a Department review of the student s abilities and grades in the following classes: 101 (Introduction to History), 149 ( Explorations), 256 (Piano Skills to gain piano proficiency), 161 (Applied ), 172 (ianship 1), 209 ( Technology), and ensemble participation. Additional courses, depending upon area of study, will also be reviewed. The number of sophomores admitted each year as Majors is limited by course and faculty resources. Students will be notified of their music major status following the semester of their application and certification of required course work and competencies. Transfer students are subject to the same review as freshmen. Credit Requirements Baccalaureate degrees at BYU-Idaho require 120 completed credit hours. Due to the comprehensive nature of the Bachelor of degrees (890 and 693) there is no minor requirement. The Bachelor of al Arts (690) and the Bachelor of Arts (687) degrees both require completion of a minor or two clusters. The Bachelor of al Jazz Studies (693-90) degree is only offered for the following instruments: string bass, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, percussion, and jazz piano. The Associate in Piano Pedagogy (358) is a specialized two-year degree. Students wishing to use this degree for transfer purposes should visit with an academic advisor to review additional requirements. Ensemble credit is required each semester of full-time registration regardless of accumulated total except the semester of student teaching. It is important that freshmen and transfer students meet in an advising session to set up an academic plan. After the academic plan is set, general advising is done in the freshman through sophomore years by the advising office. Instruments Acceptable for Majors The following instruments may be chosen for those pursuing a degree in music: euphonium, bassoon, cello, clarinet, flute, French horn, oboe, organ, percussion, piano, saxophone, string bass, trombone, trumpet, tuba, viola, violin, voice. 331

2 Advising For assistance with course planning, general academic advising, and answers to any other questions, visit the Advising Office in Manwaring Center 376 or contact or (208) or (208) Transfer Students All transfer students who have had coursework in music theory and ear training must demonstrate their proficiency in these areas in order to determine whether their prior coursework will apply towards their BYU I music degree. The exam is administered before the beginning of each semester, after which students will be advised as to which courses in the BYU I musicianship sequence they still need to complete. The dates of the exam are as follows: Fall 2010: Wednesday, September 8, 2010 Winter 2011: Tuesday, January 4, 2011 Summer 2011: Monday, April 18, 2011 All exams will begin at 10:00 a.m. in Snow 185. A study guide for this exam is available at byui.edu/music. Course Sequence See Department home page for recommended sequence of courses at Prerequisites It is assumed that all students pursuing a music degree will have developed skills in the following areas prior to their initial enrollment at BYU Idaho. Deficiencies in any area may be remedied through successful completion of appropriate courses. 1) a significant degree of technical mastery and musicianship on a primary instrument 2) the ability to read music and a basic understanding of theory fundamentals (key signatures, scales, intervals, chord identification) 3) rudimentary technical skills on the piano, including the ability to play simple four-part hymns and simple two-part pieces such as the March in D Major from the Anna Magdalena Bach Book Juries Each semester all music majors enrolled in 155, 160, 161, 260, 261, 360, 361, 460 must stand a jury exam to determine final grades and achievement levels. Students will perform before faculty in their area and must successfully pass all juries as required in order to advance to the next level. Lower Division Performance Requirement Majors are required to perform solo or chamber music in public performance for a minimum of 25 minutes during their first two years. Regularly scheduled afternoon recitals and other approved performance opportunities are available. Recital time is monitored by the private instructor. Concert Attendance majors must attend eight live concerts for six semesters. This is reported through various music courses. Piano Profi ciency Requirement A basic level of piano skills is required of all music majors. All students are required to pass 256. Consult the Department Handbook for details. Special Fees Applied Instruction: $ , $ , 161, 260, 261, 360, 361, 365, 460, $396 No deductions in fees will be made for lessons missed by students. In case of serious illness instructor should be notified before the lesson so that make up lessons may be arranged. Refund for Applied Instruction: In the event a student withdraws from applied lessons before the end of the semester. The course prepares students for further study in specifi c music periods. (Fall, Winter) MUSIC 319 Collegiate Singers ( :0:6) Fee: $12.00 Collegiate Singers is a choral ensemble of mixed voices specializing in the study and performance of a wide variety of music styles from Renaissance to Broadway. MUSIC 324 Jazz Combo (1.0:0:2) The small jazz ensemble or combo is the medium that carries the core curriculum of jazz education. Combo participation provides solo improvisation, style application, and a link to the jazz heritage beyond any other ensemble. The democracy and soul requisite for this type of communication brings a remarkable kinship indicative of true music making. The Jazz Combo enrollment includes 5-8 chamber groups that meet twice weekly for rehearsal, once with a coach and once without, and one time per week as part of the Jazz Master Class. Combos perform each semester in a joint concert with additional opportunities provided. MUSIC 325 RixStix Percussion Group ( :0:5) Prerequisite: Percussion background is desirable, but not required. Students should be able to read music and be willing to practice assigned parts outside of class as necessary. The RixStix Percussion Group is the major chamber performance venue at BYU-Idaho for percussionists and together with applied lessons and master classes forms the core of the percussion education. This is where you will master performance techniques, learn repertoire, and learn how to play contemporary chamber music, with and without a conductor. MUSIC 326 Viking Drumline (1.0:0:4) Fee: $12.00 The Viking Drumline is a one credit course functioning as a lab experience for music education majors with a band emphasis. The course offers the potential band director valuable experience in marching techniques, drill design, rehearsal strategies, repertoire, and instrument care/maintenance in a drumline setting. The drumline consists of battery and frontline instrumentation including: 5 snares, 5 basses, 3 tenors, 5 cymbals bells, xylophone, marimba, vibes, timpani, and other accessory instruments (Fall, Spring)) MUSIC 327 RixStix Drumline (1.0:0:3) Fee: $12.00 The RixStix Drumline is a one credit course functioning as the premiere drumline for students seeking a rudimental drumming experience at BYU-Idaho. Guest artists often perform with the group, giving students the opportunity to collaborate with professionals of the highest caliber.
