4 HEALTH SCIENCES 2016 SCHOOL OF MEDICINE Selection procedure All applications for admission to MBChB and BMedSc are subject to selection. Due to the limited number of openings available, only 140 candidates are admitted to the first year of study in the MBChB programme and 15 to the BMedSc (Radiation Sciences) programme. All prospective students must submit their applications to the University of the Free State, together with the selection form. The closing date for all MBChB and BMedSc applications to reach the Faculty of Health Sciences is 29 May No late applications will be considered. All prospective students for the above courses must write a National Benchmark Test (NBT). The results of this compulsory admission test will be used as an additional guideline to the selection process. More information regarding this test may be obtained from ac.za or Method of selection Preliminary selection, of which the school average and NBT comprise the largest part, will take place as set out in the selection policy. Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, language of instruction and any other two highest subjects will be taken into consideration for MBChB (Life Orientation excluded, as it is calculated separately). Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences (recommended only, not a prerequisite), language of instruction and any other two highest subjects will be taken into consideration for BMedSc (Life Orientation is excluded as it is calculated separately). English or Afrikaans is compulsory. A minimum achievement level 5 (60%) is required for each of the three compulsory science subjects (i.e. Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Life Sciences) to calculate the selection mark. A minimum admission point (AP) of 36 is required. This is calculated based on achievement in the above six subjects together with one mark for Life Orientation above achievement level 5. Extramural activities and achievements in Grade 12 are also considered. Final selection will take place only in January, after the National Senior Certificate (NSC) results have been obtained. The choice of study must be completed exactly the same on both forms. Application forms for admission to the university, together with a fully completed selection form, must be submitted to the University of the Free State. The application form, selection form, application fee, medical report, health questionnaire, photographs and certified copies of ID and results must reach the university simultaneously, should you apply in hard copy. Should you apply online, the selection form, application fee, medical report, health questionnaire, results, photos and certified copies of ID must be uploaded electronically. Only two choices of study are allowed within the School of Medicine.

The focus of the programme is the unique application of educational principles in health sciences. The programme has a solid foundation in health sciences. Although higher education does play a major role, the professional, unique character of education and training in health professions, the character of the contents, as well as the role of professional boards and relevant councils, makes this a specialist area. The master s programme offers a dissertation option and a modular (structured) option.
9 SCHOOL FOR ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONS Selection procedure All applications for admission to B Occupational Therapy, BSc (Dietetics), BSc (Physiotherapy), B Optometry and B Biokinetics are subject to selection. Due to the limited availability of places, only a limited number of applicants are admitted annually to the first study year. Prospective students must submit application forms for admission to the university, together with a fully completed selection form. Students who intend to follow a degree in Occupational Therapy, must provide proof of having visited an occupational therapy practice. The closing date by which the selection forms must reach the Faculty of Health Sciences is 29 May No late applications will be considered. The application form, selection form, application fee, medical report, health questionnaire, photographs and certified copies of ID and results must reach the university simultaneously. Only two choices of study are allowed within the Faculty of Health Sciences. All prospective students for the above courses must write a National Benchmark Test (NBT). The results of this compulsory admission test will be used as an additional guideline to the selection process. An occupational therapist s knowledge is thus grounded in die science of activity. All activities (play, training, work, recreation and interpersonal relations) in which a person participates in daily life will fall within the scope of the occupational therapist. An occupational therapist treats a client or group according to their individual and unique needs by means of activities that can be therapeutically adapted and graded by means of specific techniques, as well as therapeutic apparatus, splints and assistive devices. The context and environment in which people function, form an important part of the occupational therapist s evaluation and intervention. Occupational therapists work, among others, in hospitals, private practice, schools, pre-primary schools, clinics and old-age homes. Dieticians work in hospitals, clinics, private practice, government institutions, the media and journalism, catering firms, the food industry and as researchers. Dieticians specialise in clinical nutrition, community nutrition, sports nutrition, quantity nutrition and nutrition research. Dietetics as a career has infinite possibilities in a broad spectrum from healthy individuals to critically ill patients in hospital.

Sight problems are addressed by prescribing glasses, contact lenses or visual therapy. Optometrists work in private practices, hospitals, eye clinics or at universities as academics and researchers.
