2 1 INTRODUCTION The University of Johannesburg offers a comprehensive range of programmes from vocational to traditional, academic to professional as well as postgraduate qualifications and a host of high performance, competitive and recreational sports, arts and cultural activities. FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES Recognised nationally and internationally, the University of Johannesburg s Faculty of Health Sciences is one of the few Health Sciences Faculties in South Africa that collectively offers courses traditionally associated with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, the South African Nursing Council, the Allied Health Professions Council, other complementary health disciplines, as well as Sport and Movement Studies. The Faculty offers a preferred experience: innovative methods of training with a focus on problem-based complemented by appropriate facilities including a well-equipped dissection facility and laboratories. An on-site Health Training Centre ensures that students receive a wide range of relevant experience under the supervision of qualified practitioners, complemented by placements in relevant service-rendering facilities. PROGRAMME OFFERINGS The Faculty s specialised and highly trained lecturers prepare students for careers in Biomedical Technology, Chiropractic, Emergency Medical Care, Environmental Health, Homoeopathy, Nursing, Optometry, Podiatry, Radiography, Somatology and Sport and Movement Studies. APS Scale % Note: The mark for Life Orientation must be divided by 2 in the calculation of the APS.
3 BIOMEDICAL TECHNOLOGY A Biomedical Technologist works in a laboratory, and analyses specimens from the human body. These specimens may include blood, body fluids and tissue. The specimens are analysed in the four major disciplines; for example, Microbiology which involves the impact of microorganisms on or in the human body; Chemical Pathology which examines the normal and abnormal blood chemistry of the body, for example, cholesterol, blood glucose and hormonal levels; Cellular Pathology which determines abnormal changes in cells and tissues, for example, in cancer; and Haematology which examines white and red blood cells and clotting factors and ensures safe blood transfusion. The results of these tests assist doctors to diagnose and treat patients. Job opportunities are available in state and provincial laboratories, private pathology laboratories, higher education institutions, medical and pharmaceutical companies as well as research organisations. 5 CHIROPRACTIC Chiropractic is the science and art that is primarily concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and management of almost all conditions that are nerve, muscle, or joint related. The primary area of interest lies in the adjustment or manipulation of spinal and extremity joints to maintain a healthy body. Most newly qualified Chiropractors will go into private practice on their own or into partnership with existing practitioners or professionals from other health disciplines. Some may prefer to enter into an academic career. International work opportunities for Chiropractors also exist. 6 5 EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE (EMC) An Emergency Medical Care Practitioner treats patients that need urgent medical care by performing advanced medical procedures in the pre-hospital emergency care environment. Practitioners are also trained to participate in technical rescue operations such as extrication, water rescue, urban and wilderness search and rescue. Career opportunities exist in provincial and local authority emergency services, private emergency services and hospital groups, SANDF and SAPS, mining industry, civil defence agencies and emergency medical services abroad. 9 ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH An Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP) focusses on aspects of health, safety and environment related risks that people in the general and specific environment could be exposed to. These EHPs are responsible for researching, identifying, evaluating, monitoring and controlling the possible sources opposing direct or indirect risks, hazards, dangers or threat towards human health. Career opportunities are available in the National Department of Health, the Department of Labour, the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, the Department of Agriculture (Technical Services), the Department Mineral and Energy, Transnet, SA Medical Services, Public Service, Local Authorities and the private sector. 10 9 HOMOEOPATHY Homoeopathy is a method of health care that focuses on using natural principles in the treatment of disease. The approach is holistic, whereby all aspects of the individual are considered before selecting treatment. The programme aims to prepare students as homoeopathic doctors and primary contact practitioners within a clinical setting. Students are trained to diagnose disease, formulate treatment and management protocols for patients, as well as prepare and dispense remedies according to homoeopathic principles. 11 NURSING Nursing is an interactive process where the nursing practitioner acts as a sensitive therapeutic professional to promote health, prevent illness and maintain the wellbeing of individuals, families, groups and communities. In the BCur undergraduate programme, the learners actively participate in General and Community Nursing Science, Midwifery and Psychiatric Nursing Science. This qualification serves as a foundation for further. After completion of the Bachelor s degree, the registered practitioner can enrol for various academic programmes on diploma and degree level. 12 11 OPTOMETRY Optometrists examine people s eyes to measure eyesight and associated visual function and to detect eye diseases. Optometrists prescribe glasses and contact lenses and provide vision therapy and low-vision rehabilitation. They can also analyse test results and develop therapy and training plans for patients. 14 13 PODIATRY A Podiatrist is a health-care professional concerned with the assessment and management of foot and related lower-limb disorders. The role of a Podiatrist is to prevent or correct deformity and maintain normal mobility and function. Podiatrists provide the basis for the ideal walking style and posture, and identify any medical or surgical condition that may require further referral and management. Podiatrists play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of systemic and local conditions, which may affect the feet and lower limbs such as general foot problems, growth and development, diabetes, arthritis and sports injuries. Podiatrists are members of the multidisciplinary health care team. Podiatry is a medical discipline that focuses on the assessment and management of foot and related lower-limb disorders. Podiatrists contribute to the overall health and wellness of patients through the identification, diagnosis, management and referral of patients within public and private health sectors. Through their clinical interventions, Podiatrists play an important role in the prevention and correction of deformity whilst assisting to maintain and restore normal mobility and function. 15 RADIOGRAPHY Diagnostic radiography is a branch of medicine that uses x-rays to produce images of the human body for diagnosis of disease. Diagnostic radiographers, nuclear medicine radiographers and ultrasonographers use their expertise and knowledge of patient care, physics, anatomy, physiology, pathology and imaging techniques to produce optimal radiographic images. Radiation therapy radiographers use high-energy radiation such as x-rays and gamma rays to treat cancer patients by destroying cancer cells. 16 15 SOMATOLOGY Somatologists treat a variety of skin and body conditions in a holistic, healthrelated manner. Treatments include skin and body care, massage techniques, aromatherapy, reflexology and manual lymph drainage. A comprehensive selection of slimming and anti-ageing treatments are also taught including diamond tip microdermabrasion, IPL hair reduction and IPL skin rejuvenation, Photizo LED light therapy and microcurrent. Aesthetic aspects of the skin and body are also included, i.e. make-up, permanent and temporary hair removal, and hand and foot treatments. Job opportunities exist in health and skincare clinics, on cruise ships and airlines, laser and IPL clinics, day spas, destination spas, medi spas, cosmetic companies and self-employment. 18 17 SPT AND MOVEMENT STUDIES The Department of Sport and Movement Studies offers a variety of career options all related to sport. Fields of study include Sport Management, Sport Science, Biokinetics, Sport Communication, Sport Psychology and Sport Development. To follow an honours degree in Biokinetics, Sport Science and Sport Management, a student should successfully complete their three years in Sport and Movement Studies.
