(718) Section Number: Address: Instructor: Office Hours Program: Bachelor of Science in Human Services Course Code and Title: HUS 3602-Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment A presentation of a variety of multi-disciplinary approaches to the treatment of alcohol and substance abuse. Course will acquaint students with the impact of substance abuse on systems in human services and will enable students to understand the impact of substance abuse on the individual and the family. Students will learn to use a variety of resources for the prevention and treatment of alcohol and substance abuse. Prerequisites: HEA 103 and admissions into the Bachelors of Science (HS) Program Credits: 3 Hours: 3 Required Text: Perkinson, R., (2012). Chemical dependency counseling: A practical guide (4 th ). Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications. McNeece, A. & DiNitto, D., (2011). Chemical dependency: A systems approach (4 th ). Allyn & Bacon Minimum Course requirements: 1. Attendance and punctuality as described in the college catalogue 2. Class participation 3. Completion of all assignments given by instructor and described in the syllabus 4. Midterm exam with a minimum threshold grade of 70% or better 5. Final examination with a minimum threshold grade of 70% or better 6. Professional behavior indicative of a professional counselor. The student should silence or put cell phones on vibrate before they enter class. There should be no text messaging whatsoever during class time.

2 2 Grade Distribution: 5 th week exam 15% 10 th week exam 15% Final exam 30% Term project 20% and attendance 10% Attendance at (1) AA or NA meeting before 9 th week of class with short write up of experience 10%. Teaching Methods: Lectures, guest speakers, video presentations and role-playing. Passing Grade:: For HUS 3602, the passing grade is a C or better. Professors Please Note: Please make sure that you turn in your mid-term exam two weeks prior to administration of the exam to the course coordinator. Approximately, five weeks before the end of the semester you may turn in your final exam to the course coordinator. You are free to give extra assignments and readings, but you cannot change the course requirements. Please make sure that whatever you do it conforms to the learning objectives, assessment tools and learning activities for the course. Professors also note the following: The Human Service department strives to demonstrate and enhance the professionalism of our students. The faculty feels that this prepares them for their field placement and for the world of work. The tone is set on the very first day of class. Here is a list of things that you may want to briefly address to students to start the semester in a way that enhances student learning and maximizes chances for the student to get a good grade: 1. Attendance and lateness 2. Attitude toward learning 3. Good citizenship as demonstrated by how we deal with others and how we leave the classroom when we are finished with the class. 4. Food consumed in class 5. Cell phone use and texting should be discouraged at all times while class is in progress 6. If students stop attending at any time during the semester they should do it responsibly so as not to receive a WU grade or an F grade.

3 3 LEARNING OBJECTIVES ASSESSMENT TOOLS LEARNING ACTIVITIES Knowledge: Identify the current models of practice such as Motivational interviewing, Solution focused counseling Harm reduction approaches Cognitive therapy approaches, Psychoanalytic approaches Exam questions that demonstrate knowledge of these different counseling models. The 13 th week assignment due will demonstrate the students ability to apply models of counseling to the client. Knowledge & Skill: Identify relapse signs and triggers and how to address these issues using different therapeutic strategies Skill: Identify ways in which the counselor builds a therapeutic alliance with the client which is the hallmark of all substance abuse counseling Knowledge: Identify the rationale for groups in substance abuse counseling and the importance of using the self help model with clients Knowledge & Skill: The student will demonstrate that they know the stages of recovery and relapse issues and can move in with the appropriate therapeutic interventions. Doing a bio-psychosocial interview that looks to examine relapse issues. Exam questions that demonstrated the students ability to deal with relapse issues The student will be able to build a therapeutic alliance with the client through the therapeutic tools of relationship building, positive regard for the client as well as empathy and limit setting. Exam questions that demonstrate the students ability to form a relationship The student will attend at least one self help meeting during the semester and will journal experience demonstrating the importance of self help groups Exam questions that demonstrate knowledge of how clients utilize self help groups. This will be demonstrated by exam questions that specifically deal with relapse prevention strategies as well as knowledge of stages of recovery. The etiology of addiction. The moral model, psychological theories, cognitive behavioral theories, learning theories, psychodynamic theories, personality theories, biological theories, biochemical theories, genetic theories and sociocultural theories. Read: Chapter 1 in McNeece text. The first hours. How to greet clients, how to handle family members, beginning the therapeutic alliance, the importance of trust, dealing with denial, example of initial contact, the initial assessment, how to determine the level of care needed, the intoxicated client, the clients reaction to intoxication, what to do with the intoxicated client. Read: Chapter 1 in Perkinson text. The biopsychosocial interview. How to conduct the interview. Summary and impression, diagnosis, disposition and treatment plan, a sample biopsychosocial interview. The treatment plan. How to build a treatment plan, goals and objectives, the problem list, how to develop goals and objectives, how to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment, how to select goals and objectives, examples of goals and objectives. Read: Chapter 2 in Perkinson and chapter 3. Individual treatment. The therapeutic alliance, how to develop an alliance, how to be reinforcing, how to use empathy, transference and countertransference, examples of empathic statements, how to be confrontive, behavior therapy, how patients learn, the importance of reinforcement, how to use consequences (punishment). Read: Chapter 4 in Perkinson. Exam 1. Individual treatment continued. Cognitive therapy, how chemically dependent people think, applying cognitive therapy, how to correct inaccurate thoughts, interpersonal therapy, how to develop healthy relationships, how clients use feeling inappropriately, how clients learn relationship skills, how to change relationships, how to handle grief, how to choose the therapeutic modality. Read: Chapter 4 in Perkinson

Motivational interviewing, solution focused counseling, techniques of keeping it green, euphoric recall preferred defense structure of the chemically dependent client. Detoxification programs, intensive treatment, residential programs, outpatient services, education and psychoeducation, nontraditional treatments, stress management, assertiveness training. Read: Chapter 6 in McNeece. The use of groups in addictions counseling. Benefits of the group process, euphoric recall group, reading group, spirituality group, men/women group, community group and personal inventory group. Read: Chapter 5 in Perkinson. The use of self help groups: Alcoholics Anonymous, a spiritual awakening, two alcoholics talk to each other, the big book, twelve steps, meetings, feelings are adaptive, how to be assertive. Read: Perkinson, ppgs and discuss NA/AA meeting. Exam II Special problems in treating the chemically dependent. The concept of the mentally ill chemically dependent client (mica), depressed, angry homicidal, anxious, psychotic and other types of MICA clients. Read: Chapter 9 in Perkinson. The recovery process and relapse prevention. The four phases of recovery, PAW (post acute withdrawal), defining and preventing relapse. Handout (Gorski s model for relapse prevention). Family systems and chemical dependency. Theories on alcoholism and the family, family systems theory of alcoholism and the family, rituals and routines, shame, rules and roles. Read: McNeece ppgs Family systems and chemical dependency. Codependency and related constructs, children of the chemically dependent, assessment and treatment of the chemically dependent family, behavioral perspective, stress-coping perspective, family therapy perspective and treatment of the family. Treatment issues and concerns. Read: McNeece Chapter 9 and chapter 11, skip pages FINAL EXAM Term Paper (4-5 pages) Due Week Choose a specific type of counseling theory technique that can be used with substance abusers family members or population (cognitive, art, psychoeducational, psychodrama, motivational, psychoanalysis, Gorski s relapse prevention, various, screening instruments! MAST, ASI group, and individual counseling etc). 2. Describe the theory/technique in detail. 3. Explain the pros/cons of the theory/technique for counseling purposes within addictions. 4. Cite references using APA style. ASSIGNMENT DUE BY THE 5 TH WEEK OF CLASS: Rationale: It is not possible for a counselor to do effective substance abuse counseling without the help of a self help program such as AA, NA etc. In order to facilitate this you need to attend an open meeting. After you attend the meeting you will be asked to reflect the following in a short reflection paper: 1. How did you feel by attending this meeting? 2. What did you learn from attending? 3. Do you think everyone who is in recovery should join a self help group? 4. Did you have any negative reaction to the experience? 5. Why is attendance at a self help group useful when a client is in counseling? 6. What was the group dynamics involved with the self help meeting that you attended?

As a community of intellectual and professional workers, the College recognizes its responsibility for providing instruction in information literacy and academic integrity, offering models of good practice, and responding vigilantly and appropriately to infractions of academic integrity. Accordingly, academic dishonesty is prohibited in The City University of New York and at New York City College of Technology and is punishable by penalties, including failing grades, suspension, and expulsion. The complete text of the College policy on Academic Integrity may be found in the catalog. Definitions and Examples of Academic Dishonesty Cheating is the unauthorized use or attempted use of material, information, notes, study aids, devices or communication during an academic exercise. The following are some examples of cheating, but by no means is it an exhaustive list. Copying from another student during an examination or allowing another to copy your work. Unauthorized collaboration on a take-home assignment or examination. Using notes during a closed-book examination. Taking an examination for another student, or asking or allowing another student to take an examination for you. Changing a graded exam and returning it for more credit. Submitting substantial portions of the same paper to more than one course without consulting with each instructor. Preparing answers or writing notes in a blue book (exam booklet) before an examination. Allowing others to research and write assigned papers or do assigned projects, including use of commercial term paper services. Giving assistance to acts of academic misconduct/dishonesty. Fabricating data (all or in part). Submitting someone else s work as your own. Unauthorized use during an examination of electronic devices such as cell phones, palm pilots, computers or other technologies to retrieve or send information.

9 9 Plagiarism is the act of presenting another person s ideas, research or writings as your own. The following are some examples of plagiarism, but by no means is it an exhaustive list: Copying another person s actual words without the use of quotation marks and footnotes attributing the words to their source. Presenting another person s ideas or theories in your own words without acknowledging the source. Using information that is not common knowledge without acknowledging the source. Failing to acknowledge collaborators on homework and laboratory assignments. Internet plagiarism includes submitting downloaded term papers or parts of term papers, paraphrasing or copying information from the internet without citing the source, and cutting and pasting from various sources without proper attribution. Obtaining Unfair Advantage is any activity that intentionally or unintentionally gives a student an unfair advantage in his/her academic work over another student. The following are some examples of obtaining unfair advantage, but by no means is it an exhaustive list: Stealing, reproducing, circulating or otherwise gaining advance access to examination materials. Depriving other students of access to library materials by stealing, destroying, defacing, or concealing them. Retaining, using or circulating examination materials which clearly indicate that they should be returned at the end of the exam. Intentionally obstructing or interfering with another student s work. Falsification of Records and Official Documents The following are some examples of falsification, but by no means is it an exhaustive list: Forging signatures of authorization. Falsifying information on an official academic record. Falsifying information on an official document such as a grade report, letter of permission, drop/add form, ID card or other college document. 10/11
