1 Abnormal Child Psychology PSYC Spring 2015 Wednesday 6:00-8:50pm, LANG 310 University of North Texas Instructor: Daniel Steinberg, M.A. Teaching Assistant: Vivian Lam danielsteinberg@my.unt.edu vivianlam@my.unt.edu Office: Terrill Hall 215, Cubicle #37 Office: Terrill Hall 215, Cubicle #13 Office Hours: Wednesday 8am - 11am Office Hours: Monday 10am - 1pm or by appointment or by appointment Required Text Parritz, R. H. & Troy, M. F. (2014). Disorders of Childhood: Development and Psychopathology. Belmont: Cengage. Course Description: A survey of the symptomatology, theoretical perspectives and treatment approaches of psychological disorders seen in infants, children and adolescents. Prerequisites: PSYC 3620 or PSYC Objectives: 1. Demonstrate ability to critically examine the medical model used in much of traditional psychology, especially focusing on how such assessment, diagnosis, and treatment may be neglectful of contextual-developmental factors that are relevant to youth 2. Demonstrate moderate knowledge of theory and research relevant to psychology of youth 3. Demonstrate familiarity with diagnostic criteria associated with common psychological disorders experienced in childhood and adolescence 4. Demonstrate understanding of the intellectual, emotional, and behavioral deviations associated with youth psychopathology, including epidemiology and etiology 5. Demonstrate initial acquisition of a framework from which to approach assessment and treatment of youth psychopathology Expectancies: You will do best in this course if you attend class on a regular basis for two reasons. Attendance, in and of itself, will not be counted toward your grade. However, (1) there will be several times throughout the semester that class participation in exercises will be recorded. These class exercises may take a variety of forms, including: written quizzes, small group projects, role-plays, or oral question and answer sessions. The dates of these exercises will not be announced prior to the class period in which they occur. Further, although PowerPoint slides will be provided to you before the class in which they are covered, (2) additional information that you will be tested on will be included in lectures. Having the slides (and even having the slides and the book material) will not be enough to do well on the exams. I provide the basic material ahead of time so you can participate attentively in class! Please silence all cell phones, laptops, and all other electronic devices at the beginning of class! In addition, please, do not silently text, read unrelated materials, or conduct other non-related activity (e.g., movie watching, checking social media, etc.) in this class. You do not have to be here, but I ask that, if you 1

2 are here, that you are respectful of the classroom environment, that you pay attention, and do not distract others. If you are distracting others (including me), I will ask you to leave. You should read the assigned material prior to the lecture in which the readings will be covered, so that you may participate in an informed manner. There may be occasions in which an additional reading or two (i.e., a case-study, chapter, article, or blog) is added to your book chapter. You will be notified of this addition at least one class period ahead of time, and you will be given the material or instructed on how to obtain it. You should check the Blackboard site (and your corresponding ) for this class on a regular basis. While this is not an online course, I will use online services. Prior to each new lecture topic, I will post my lecture slides in the course content section. I will also use the site to post grades. In addition, I will frequently post messages about class related material on Blackboard and, sometimes, I will post assignments and extra-credit opportunities there too! Discussions of child and adolescent psychopathology may be emotionally charged. In many treatment models, the clinician s awareness of personal reactions is crucial to effective assessment and treatment. Therefore, you are encouraged to consider your own reactions to the material covered in this class. At times, I may ask you to think about something specific to facilitate this awareness. Although you will not be required to disclose personal reactions, I request that you allow yourselves to experience your reactions fully. In addition, you must allow other students the opportunity to experience - and, if they so choose, to discuss - relevant reactions without expressing judgment or telling others of their experiences. Class Policies Communication: Please do not me through Blackboard. I do not check that inbox and will not see your . Please use danielsteinberg@my.unt.edu. Academic Integrity: Academic Integrity is defined in the UNT Policy on Student Standards for Academic Integrity. Academic Dishonesty includes cheating, plagiarism, forgery, fabrication, facilitating academic dishonesty, and sabotage. Any suspected case of Academic Dishonesty will be handled in accordance with the University Policy and procedures. Possible academic penalties range from a verbal or written admonition to a grade of F in the course. Plagiarism is the use of another author s ideas or work without crediting (citing) the author for that idea, or copying work from other students. When in doubt, ask me. Electronic Devices: Cell phones and any other electronic or noise-making devices are not allowed in this class; do NOT text while in-class. If you have an emergency or are expecting an important call, please leave the classroom to take care of your situation. Laptops are permissible for the purposes of taking class notes as long as they are not used in such a way as to cause distractions to the rest of the class. 2

3 How You Earn Points: In-Class Exercises: These may take a variety of forms, including: written (fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, and/or short-answer essay) quizzes, small group projects, role-plays, or question and answer sessions. Sometimes, these exercises will be graded for accuracy. Sometimes, though, there will not be right or wrong answers, and thus points will be awarded based on participation. Most exercises will be worth 10 points. Some will be more or less. I will always make clear to you what the total available points are, as well as what you have earned. On rare occasions, depending on time constraints, some part of an exercise may be done via Blackboard. The dates of these exercises will not typically be announced. A total of 100 in-class exercise points will be figured into the course calculation. Exams: In addition to participation exercises, you will have 4 exams. Exams will be comprised of multiple choice, true-false, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and short-essay questions. The exams will require some memorization; however, evidence of critical thinking and assimilation of information will be essential to satisfactory performance. Exams are not intended to be cumulative. However, as material presented in one class may build from previous lectures, some prior knowledge may be required as you progress on exams throughout the course. You will need to bring a Scantron form 882 ES (the green one) and a #2 pencil for the exams. Make-up Exams: All make-up exams will be given on only one day - at the end of the semester, May 8 th. You may take only one test on make-up day and you must have prior approval from me to do so. A valid excuse such as written notice of illness or emergency will be required. Grading: Final grades will be calculated as a percentage of the points earned in the class divided by the total number of possible points (500). Exam points A = % ( ) Exam points B = 80-89% ( ) Exam points C = 70-79% ( ) Exam points D = 60-69% ( ) Participation Exercises 100 Points F = 0-59% ( < 300) Total 500 points Extra Credit: You may earn up to 15 points of extra credit by participating in research experiments in the psychology department OR doing some equivalent, such as writing summaries of articles, chapters, books, movies, or volunteer/work experiences RELEVANT to our class. You have until the last day of lecture to turn this in, but the earlier the better! The first can be done through SONA systems or by providing the professor or instructor with an extracredit receipt card signed by a researcher. The latter must be approved by me BEFORE you participate. The SONA systems website can be found at: Reading, Movie, or Volunteer Experience Summary: Include (a) a general synopsis, (b) how the content relates to class material like childhood disorders, (c) your personal reactions to the 3

4 material, (d) your critique of the experience and/or how the material was conducted or presented, and (e) specifically what you learned. These formatting of these assignments must conform to the guidelines set forth in the APA Publication Manual, 6 th Ed. (2009). 5 This syllabus is not a contract and should be considered tentative. The instructor reserves the right to alter this syllabus as deemed appropriate to advance the learning needs of the class. Adequate advanced notice will be given for any date or requirement changes. University Policies: Disability Accommodation: The University of North Texas makes reasonable academic accommodations for students with disabilities. Students seeking accommodations must first register with the Office of Disability Accommodation (ODA) to verify their eligibility. If a disability is verified, the ODA will provide you with an accommodation letter to be delivered to faculty to begin a private discussion regarding your specific needs in a course. You may request accommodations at any time; however, ODA notices of accommodation should be provided as early as possible in the semester to avoid any delay in implementation. Note that students must obtain a new letter of accommodation for every semester and must meet with each faculty member prior to implementation in each class. Students are strongly encouraged to deliver letters of accommodation during faculty office hours or by appointment. Faculty members have the authority to ask students to discuss such letters during their designated office hours to protect the privacy of the student. For additional information see the Office of Disability Accommodation website at You may also contact them by phone at Reporting Grades: It is against University policy for me to divulge grade information via or telephone. If you have concerns about your grade at any point in the semester, please schedule an appointment to meet with me. It is also against University policy for me to discuss your grades with anyone other than you, the student, unless a signed waiver is on file. University Policy on Student Behavior in the Classroom Student behavior that interferes with an instructor s ability to conduct a class or other students opportunity to learn is unacceptable and disruptive and will not be tolerated in any instructional forum at UNT. Students engaging in unacceptable behavior will be directed to leave the classroom and the instructor may refer the student to the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities to consider whether the student s conduct violated the Code of Student Conduct. The University s expectations for student conduct apply to all instructional forums, including university and electronic classroom, labs, discussion groups, field trips, etc. The Code of Student Conduct can be found at Sexual Harassment/Discrimination: The Department of Psychology complies with the University s policies regarding discrimination and sexual harassment. Complaints may be directed to the departmental chairperson or UNT s Equal Opportunity Office. Incompletes: If, for some reason, you find you are unable to complete the course, you may request an I from me and I will consider each student s situation on a case-by-case basis. Students who take an I must complete the work and have the I removed within one year or the student must enroll in the class again. An I may be given after the student has completed the first last three-fourths of a semester and only if a student (1) is passing the course and (2) has a justifiable and documented reason, beyond the control of the student (such as serious illness or military service), for not completing the work on schedule. 5
