School of Arts and Humanities PSYC620 Substance Abuse and Addiction 3 Graduate Credit Hours 8 Week Course Prerequisites: None Table of Contents Course Description Course Scope Course Objectives Course Delivery Method Text and Course Materials Evaluation Procedures Grading Scale Course Outline Policies Academic Services Course Description (Catalog) This course guides graduate learners in advanced level study of the history and most scientifically supported methods of diagnosing and treating substance use disorders and other addictive behavior problems with an emphasis on theory and practice. Course foci include in-patient and out-patient treatment; traditional and nontraditional approaches; self-help and peer support groups; science-supported therapeutic modalities; the use of individual, group, and family psychotherapy interventions; and co-occurring mental and addictive disorders. Course Scope This course is a comprehensive study of substance abuse and addiction. It is designed to familiarize students with the biological, psychological, and social components of the addictive process, including coverage of the major substances of abuse as well as the foundation, assessment, and treatment of addiction.

2 Course Objectives Students successfully completing this course will: 1. Investigate seminal and contemporary theories of addiction and treatment models 2. Assess the magnitude of substance abuse and dependence problems in the U.S., including issues related to substance use assessment. 3. Articulate characteristics of the major substances of abuse. 4. Examine issues experienced by special populations of substance users, including behavioral addictions such as problem gambling and sex addiction. 5. Evaluate current trends and related issues in the field of substance abuse and addiction intervention and treatment. 6. Apply to case studies key concepts in treatment plan development and intervention for clients. 7. Critically analyze peer-reviewed publications from the body of literature focused on substance abuse and addiction. 8. Demonstrate APA style and writing skills commensurate with graduate level studies. Course Delivery Method This 8-week graduate course delivered via distance learning will enable students to complete academic work completely online. Course materials and access to an online learning management system will be made available to each student. Online assignments include interactive dialogs accomplished in groups through threaded forums and assignments completed and graded individually. 3 Evaluation Procedures GENERAL COURSEWORK EXPECTATIONS It is expected that graduate students will exhibit advanced level critical thinking, the ability to synthesize multiple sources of information, writing skills, and academic integrity in all course activities. With the exception of forum posts, assignment submissions completed in a narrative essay or composition format may not be written in first or second person ( I or you ). All writing must follow the citation and reference style established by APA the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6 th ed. (2009, Washington, D.C.: American Psychological Association), in size 12 Times New Roman or Arial font, double-spaced with 1 margins on all sides of the page and include a cover page with the following centered vertically and horizontally: Student Name, Date of Submission, Assignment Title, Course Name and Professor Name. With the rare exception of briefly quoting specific statistical research findings, in which case the publication s author and year date of publication must be properly cited with quoted material placed inside quotation marks, all submitted content MUST be paraphrased (summarized in the student s own words) with correct source citations properly formatted in APA style. ANY copying of any kind and/or failure to include source citations in the paper body and in the assignment s attached References page will result in an assignment score of zero with any repeat instances causing a failing course grade. The website is an excellent, easy to understand resource for APA style formatting and source citation. Unless otherwise instructed for individual assignments, students may not use commercial websites as the basis for completion of any assignments. Encyclopedia websites, such as Wikipedia or Encarta, dictionaries, blogs, or opinion slanted news media outlets, and commercial Internet sources such as Web MD or About.com may not be used for any writing assignment. Scholarly, peer-reviewed journals from the APUS Online Library must be used for assignment completion. TIMELY SUBMISSION OF COURSEWORK Students are expected to submit classroom assignments by the posted due date and to complete the course according to the published class schedule. As adults, and, in many cases, working professionals, students must manage competing time demands. Should a student need additional time to complete an assignment he or she must contact his or her professor before the due date so the situation can be reviewed and a resolution determined. Not all delayed assignment request will be approved; cruises and planned leisure trips to areas without Internet access are examples of requests that will be declined with the rationale being that graduate students should not enroll in courses in which they expect to not be in attendance for the full term. Work may not be completed early to accommodate anticipated absences later in the term nor can it be submitted late for partial credit. The University has an extension system and a set of policies (see links on the left classroom screen blue menu column) for managing unavoidable course work extension needs.

4 COURSEWORK FORUMS: Due each week of the course This course includes weekly forums requiring participation in interactive dialogs with classmates and the professor about course-relevant topics. Forums are graded scholarly dialogs with both general posting and topic focused requirements, located on the classroom Forums page. EXAMS: Due Weeks 4 and 8 Students will complete two open-book, non-proctored, untimed essay examinations, a midterm exam covering the first four weeks of the course, and a final exam covering Weeks 5 through 8. Specific instructions for this assignment are located in the classroom Assignment page. CASE STUDY ANALYSIS: Due Week 7 This course includes a Case Study Analysis, an assignment which provides the opportunity to read and conceptualize a clinically-based case, using information from the course text and the scholarly literature. The Case Study Analysis is completed in three phases which include (1) selection of a case (from the supplied list) and submission of a relevant area of interest from the scholarly literature (due by end of Week 1); an annotated bibliography (due by end of Week 3); and the final analysis (due by end of Week 7). Turnitin.com provides resources on developing topics and assignments that encourage and guide students in producing papers that are intellectually honest, original in thought, clear in expression and correctly source documented. This tool helps ensure a culture of adherence to the University's standards for intellectual honesty. Turnitin.com also reviews students' papers for matches with Internet materials and with thousands of like-sourced student papers in its database, and returns an Originality Report to instructors and/or students.
