1 Washington D.C. Map and Walking Tour ~Map Creation and Brochure~ Introduction: Congratulations! You have been selected to participate in this exciting project. Your job is to create a brochure and map of Washington DC for people to use as a guide through the wonderful city of Washington DC. Walking Tour Samples: The National Mall stands at the heart of monumental Washington, embodying the ideals of democracy in its gleaming white marble structures, pools, fountains, and perfect greensward. The Mall honors this country's most hallowed heroes in memorials and monuments, and its many museums celebrate the arts, histories, and cultures of the world. The Smithsonian Institution exerts the most powerful influence here, with nine different buildings, but other stellar institutions such as the National Gallery of Art, the National Archives, and the United States Holocaust Memorial make up the essence of Washington DC. Stand in awe before the world's tallest manmade stone structure as we reveal the story of our first President and the monumental obstacles he overcame. Ponder the incredible historical significance of the WWII Memorial. Understand the great sacrifice of the names on the Vietnam Wall as you look at your own reflection. Stand in the exact spot where MLK delivered his "I Have A Dream" speech. Learn about the President who guided the nation through the Civil War and ended slavery. Hear Dwight Eisenhower speak on the meaning of the Korean War, and gain the knowledge of how the "Forgotten War" was in fact the beginning of one of the longest. The National Mall is the single greatest attraction in Washington DC, don't miss out on any of these icons of American democracy. The walk starts at the White House and continues through the National Mall, along the Reflecting Pool, around the Tidal Basin, and eventually ends at the US Capitol Building and Supreme Court. This tour will take you through many significant eras in the history of the United States, including the Revolutionary War, Vietnam War, Korean War, World War II, past several memories to inspiring presidents such as Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Jefferson, and past all three branches of government. 2 ~Outline Requirements~ First, you need a detailed outline for this assignment. You are going to outline information about the History and facts of Washington D.C. Your outline needs to contain THREE DIFFERENT RESOURCES and you must cite each of your resources on a separate sheet of paper. Your Glencoe textbook is a good starting point for your outline. Required Outline Components: - Minimum of Three Different Resources & Citations History, design and creation of Washington D.C. Facts and detailed information about specific monuments, memorials, Federal buildings, and museums. Sample Outline: I. History of Washington D.C. (page , Glencoe Text) Main Idea: Before 1790, the United States had no permanent capital city. Early Congresses met in various cities. A political compromise established the nation s capital along the Potomac River. A. Developing Washington D.C. 1. The location of the city was selected by George Washington. 2. It is believed that Washington selected this area for its natural beauty and/or belief that the Potomac would be a good navigable waterway. 3. Unfortunately, debris and silt were deposited into the shallow water from developing cities. The stagnant water created unhealthy conditions, a rotten smell, and water that was not deep enough for ships to utilize the full length of the river. 4. French architect Pierre L Enfant designed the plan for the city in Modern Washington DC still retains many of the elements of Pierre L Enfant s plan. B. Washington D.C. in 1801 C. The Tidal Basin

Who was instrumental in the design and layout of the city? When did construction begin? How did it get its name? Why is Washington DC not considered a state? Include a map of the city from the Internet. Your walking tour guide will suggest which stops to take first and where to go next. You need to indicate this on your map as well (see sample below). Your walking tour should be based on a two- day stay at Washington D.C. You DO NOT need to include everything there is to do in Washington D.C.

7 ~Map Activity~ For this activity, you are going to create a large- scale map (construction paper will be provided) of Washington D.C. Specific emphasis is going to be placed on the National Mall and the surrounding area. Next, you are going to create a VERY NEAT (pencil first) map of Washington DC. Your map is going to include a certain number of monuments/memorials, museums, and Federal buildings. Each item on the map needs to include a one paragraph description in your own words. The one paragraph description will go on the map using index cards or card stock (typed).
