Development of proficiency of grammar and language usage. Continued exploration of current topics and cultures of Spain, Latin America and Hispanic cultures of the US as reflected in the language and literature. II. COURSE OUTCOMES: (Specify the learning skills the student demonstrates through completing the course and link critical thinking skills to specific course content and objectives.) Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

2 I. recognize and comprehend spoken Spanish at the high intermediate level of competency. II. orally produce fluent and clear comprehensible Spanish to respond appropriately to questions, initiate and sustain conversations, present ideas, paraphrase, or describe and discuss topics and themes at the high intermediate level of comptency. III. read, identify and summarize specific information from selected readings and authentic texts such as ads, magazine or newspaper articles, song lyrics, poems and short stories or literary excerpts. IV. construct sentences, compose paragraphs and create compositions applying correct usage of grammatical structures and appropriate vocabulary to express ideas at the high intermediate level of competency. V. demonstrate knowledge and appreciation of the diversity of Hispanic cultures and the products of these cultures. Compare and contrast Hispanic cultures with other non-hispanic cultures and distinguish simple behavioral patterns that represent these cultures. III. COURSE OBJECTIVES: (Specify major objectives in terms of the observable knowledge and/or skills to be attained.) In the process of completing this course, students will: I. review, recall and employ vocabulary and grammatical structures from Spanish 1, 2 and 3. II. recognize and employ new vocabulary and grammatical structures in order to communicate and express ideas in the present, past, future and perfect tenses, including both the indicative and subjunctive moods. III. interact with others and engage in discourse in spoken Spanish within the range of vocabulary topics and structures covered in IV. comprehend intermediate level written texts, including literary selections. V. compose essays, creative narrations and brief responses in clear and coherent sentences, paragraphs and compositions. VI. compare and contrast the language and cultures of Spanish-speaking people with the language and cultures of the U.S. and other countries, and gain understanding through exposure to authentic products of these cultures, such as film, literature, and art. VII. demonstrate a high-intermediate level of competency in the five skills as mandated by the proficiency guidelines of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL): listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing, and knowledge and appreciation of the people and cultures of Spanish-speaking countries. IV. COURSE OUTLINE: Lecture Content: A. Oral 1. Listening comprehension: understand questions, follow instructions, comprehend classroom discourse as well as authentic materials, such as recorded conversations, interviews, video clips, excerpts from films, and commercials, incorporating, with increasing frequency and complexity, the vocabulary and grammatical structures outlined in B and C, below. 2. Speaking: read aloud, request information, respond to questions, interview, report information, create dialogues, deliver oral presentations, incorporating, with increasing frequency and complexity, the vocabulary and grammatical structures outlined in B and C, below. B. Vocabulary Spanish 4 vocabulary consists of a review and expansion of vocabulary themes covered in levels 1 through 3 as well as the addition of new topics. Following is a list of vocabulary themes covered in one of the selected textbooks: 1. The arts, movies and television 2. Current events, politics and the media 3. Natural phenomena and natural disasters 4. Uses and abuses of nature 5. Beliefs and ideologies 6. Laws and rights 7. Work and finance 8. Technology and science 9. The universe and astronomy 10. Linguistic diversity within the Spanish language Lab Content: Course lab content closely parallels course lecture content. The difference lies primarly in the type of activities carried out. Lab activities tend to focus heavily on listening comprehension and may include computer-mediated interactive exercises. V. Students continue to explore the culture and linguistic diversity of the Hispanic world and the geography of Spanish-speaking countries. Readings present customs and traditions as well as history, economic and political organization, music, art, popular culture and current affairs, and these topics are often the subject of class discussions, research, and writing assignments. VI. METHODS TO MEASURE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND DETERMINE GRADES: Students in this course will be graded in at least one of the following four categories. Please check those appropriate. Objective examinations including: a) multiple choice d) completion b) true/false e) other (specify): c) matching items COURSE GRADE DETERMINATION: Description/explanation: Based on the categories checked in A-D, it is the recommendation of the department that the instructor's grading methods fall within the following departmental guidelines; however, the final method of grading is still at the discretion of the individual instructor. The instructor's syllabus must reflect the criteria by which the student's grade has been determined. (A minimum of five (5) grades must be recorded on the final roster.) If several methods to measure student achievement are used, indicate here the approximate weight or percentage each has in determining student final grades.
