1 Level 2 Award in Speaking and Listening Generic Exemplar Assessments Guidance Notes for centres / tutors These examples should only be used as a guide. s may use them as practice assessments but they must not be used as assessments that are to be submitted for external moderation. The assessments must be internally devised and moderated by the centre. s may copy the format of these exemplars and simply replace the example assessments with their own internally devised assessments. Alternatively they may prefer to design their own style of assessments in order to meet the learning outcomes - innovative and unusual assessments are welcomed. It is essential that all tasks are labelled and referenced to the Level & Unit Title, Learning Outcome and Assessment Criteria for example: Level 2 Listening in (language), Learning Outcome 1, Assessment Criteria 1.2. The Brief must be presented in English and each assessment should clearly state if the learner may or may not use a dictionary or glossary. Speaking Unit learner may use a dictionary to prepare, Listening Unit learner may not use a dictionary. Dialogue Unit learner may use a dictionary to prepare. The examples shown have a defined topic(s) but tutors/centres may choose any topic(s) of their choice, taken from any area of study, but the choice of topic(s) should be appropriate to the level. It is advisable for tutors to design tasks that give learners the opportunity to produce more evidence than the required minimum. For example: the assessment criteria may ask for a minimum of 8 questions from the learner but if the task asks for say 10 or 11 questions then the learner has a better chance of obtaining the required assessment criteria. The examples presented demonstrate this. Centres must ensure that all of the assessment criteria have been met in order to award learners a Pass. As s complete the tasks the results must be noted on the corresponding Tracking Document. s should tick the learners work to show that the learners have fulfilled the assessment criteria but tutors must not correct the answers. s are permitted unlimited number of attempts at assessments. If learners are not successful at the first attempt, tutors may highlight mistakes and provide feedback. If tutors correct mistakes then the is not able to re-attempt that part of the task. A random sample of completed assessments from learners will be requested by ABC Awards for external moderation. Further details can be found in Guidance Notes for Centres on the ABC website.

Assessment Criteria 1.1: Speak for 1 2 minutes in the target language on a chosen topic which must include:- vocabulary in everyday use adjectives and adverbs past, present and future tenses/timeframes negative statements opinions or preferences compound sentences intonation and pronunciation to express meaning clearly routine numerical data Included EXAMPLE Brief Topic: General Give a short talk in (target language) on a topic of your choice. You must include all the assessment criteria in your talk. You may use a dictionary or a glossary to prepare but any notes made in the target language must be handed in to the tutor prior to the assessment. Notes/prompt cards in English are acceptable. This task does not need to be recorded Level 2 Speaking typical learner response (spoken in target language) I am going to talk about my recent visit to (town/city). It s my second visit there. Last month I visited (town/city) with my friends. The first day we decided to go on a tour of the city. The weather was wonderful. It didn t rain all day. We visited the cathedral. The mosaics were fantastic and we spent at least an hour there taking photographs. After a tour of all the sights we were starving. There are so many restaurants in (town/city) that it is difficult to choose one. I m a vegetarian but my friends eat everything so we

The prices were reasonable; no more than 25 Euros per person for a three course tasting menu with a bottle of wine, and we all managed to find something we liked. I wanted to try the local speciality it was really spicy and I couldn t eat it all and had to drink water all afternoon! Next time I will choose something different. We got back to the hotel at around five o clock exhausted but happy. I will definitely visit (city) again, next summer. Which of the two items does the customer choose and why?

I d like to buy a shirt for my son. It is his birthday tomorrow. What size do you want? I am not sure. I bought him medium last time, but I think I had better have a large one. What colour do you prefer? This green is very popular this season. He doesn t like green. I bought him a green shirt once, and he never wore it. His favourite colour is light blue. We ve got this one in cotton at 19 Euros and 99 cents or this designer one in silk at 89 Euros and 99 cents. I will take the cotton one at 19.99, it is very nice. It will go very well with his trousers. If it doesn t fit him/suit him, could I change it? Of course, just bring the receipt, please. Can I pay by credit card? Yes, or by cheque or cash. If you open a store account today you can save 10% on your purchase. No thank you. I am not interested in having a store account. I would like to pay with credit card please. Typical responses: 1. 7 Note to s: At Level 2 s are expected to listen to recorded material. s can choose to make their own recordings in order to ensure that all of the assessment criteria are included in the stimulus or may use recordings from textbooks etc There is no restriction as to the number of times a is permitted to listen to the recording. Please note that although the has to answer a minimum of 8 questions you must ensure that all the criteria has been achieved for example in order for the learner to demonstrate that they understand a negative structure then they must respond correctly to either questions 4 or 10.

ABC Course ID: :. name: Date: Dialogue in.(language) Learning Outcome 1: Be able to maintain a dialogue in the target language and clarify meaning Assessment Criteria 1.1 : Maintain a dialogue in the target language with a minimum of 16 exchanges (at least 8 produced by the learner) which must include the following relevant everyday vocabulary simple adjectives a negative structure the simplest ways of expressing at least 2 tenses/timeframes simple link words a question from the learner a response to at least 1 unknown open question intonation and pronunciation to express meaning clearly simple numbers (at least ) Included EXAMPLE Brief Topic: Accommodation You are at a hotel reception in (town/city) enquiring about your room booking. Prepare the following phrases/questions in (target language) and respond to any questions when required. Your tutor will play the part of a receptionist and start the conversation.. You may use a dictionary to prepare for the assessment but any notes made in the target language must be handed in to the tutor prior to the assessment. The dialogue must be recorded (audio or video) and should be tutor led. The restaurant is open until (give suitable time) No thank you, I don t want lunch but can I book a table in the restaurant for 8.30 in the evening for two people? Of course. Would you like a table inside or on the terrace? On the terrace/inside please. I will be in the bar/lounge before dinner. Very well we will book a table for you. What time would you like breakfast in the morning? Tomorrow, I am going to go to the market in the morning, so I will have breakfast early at 7:30 am. Very well. Your key Mr/Mrs (name) Note to s: The dialogue must be recorded (audio or video) for every learner and should be tutor led. s may have unlimited attempts. If you feel the learner has not covered all of the assessment criteria in their first attempt, then schedule a second attempt. As the dialogue must contain at least 1 unknown open question you must ask a different unknown question on each attempt. If the learner has covered virtually all of the assessment criteria but for example has not achieved one criterion (e.g. demonstrated the use of a negative structure) then you can get the learner to re-attempt that section of the task only. s should use their judgement as to whether the whole dialogue should be re-attempted or just a section of it. Please refer to the ABC document Guidelines for conducting role plays for the Dialogue tasks for further information.
