2 Why is this important? Said by industry representatives: The same processes and the same raw materials are available at the same price all over the world. Transport is cheap. We have higher salaries. What we do have is better availability and better resource efficiency.

3 What's the potential? Despite much IT, the potential is huge! Because of much IT, the potential is huge! Very clear in the industrial projects carried out by SICS. Gains are magnitudes bigger than the investments. Studies * show that the potential is around 10 procent of the net margin, corresponding to 100 billion SEK per year for the Swedish industry. * Hans Ahlmann Lunds Tekniska Högskola 1999; AT Kearney Benchmark Data 2005 International Study; ABB Robotics Internal Study of the car industry.

4 Example 1: Siemens SICS has built an optimizing maintenance planning system for gas turbines for Siemens Turbomachinery in Finspång. The cost of the system was approximately 1.5 MSEK. The return of investment in direct savings was estimated by Siemens to be approximately 6 months. Siemens expects to earn several hundred times the investment on the system.

5 Exemple 2: Green Cargo SICS optimizes Green Cargo's use of engines to haul freight. The key is shifting transports ±45minutes and then cleverly allocate engines to transports, so that better loops are created. Green Cargo saves at least 7 MSEK / year from this.

6 Why here and now? Sweden is in a good position. There are: Good researchers with an interest in industrial needs, Established systems integrators, who can turn this into exports, Industrial end users with a pressing need and ability to make use of the results. This has become a fast moving area. We risk being left behind in this traditional Swedish area. (The fast pace also makes it OK to export knowledge in this area!) We have shown that we can do it! Real industrial use. Quality research.

7 What is needed? The area needs more attention! There are many successful industrial projects without context this message is still lost in noise. The needs and solutions cut across industrial sectors. We need a focused effort: Better visibility, easier to explain the benefits of these techniques. A portfolio of succuessful projects give credibility, especially when moving into new industrial sectors. A means to coherently and efficiently use government funding in this area. More interest from academia in real world industrial problems.

8 The Centre We are creating the Centre for Availability and Resource Efficiency. A place where good reseach meets active industry. A place where industry can share ideas across sectors. A place where you can find inspiration for the future or the solution the problem you have right now. At the end of today's programme we want to know if you are interested in taking part in this!
