Filing Category: ROOF COVERING AND ROOF DECK CONSTRUCTION Roof Covering (202) Issued July 1, 2000 MALARKEY ASPHALT SHINGLES HERBERT MALARKEY ROOFING COMPANY 3131 NORTH COLUMBIA BLVD. PORTLAND, OREGON SUBJECT Malarkey #230-Alaskan, #240-Hurricane, #272-Legacy-35 and #204 Dura-Seal 25 Asphalt Shingles. 2.0 DESCRIPTION 2.1 General: The Malarkey #230-Alaskan, #240-Hurricane and #272-Legacy-35 shingles are styrene-butyl-styrene (SBS) rubber-modified asphalt shingles used as roof coverings. The #204 Dura-Seal 25 shingle is an asphalt shingle used as a roof covering. The roof coverings have a Class A roofing classification when installed as described in this report. 2.2 Materials: General: The #230-Alaskan, #240-Hurricane and #272-Legacy-35 shingles are composed of SBS rubber-modified asphalt coating and fire-retardant fillers on a Malarkey polyglass-fiber mat. The #204 Dura-Seal 25 shingles consist of an asphalt-coated fiberglass mat and fire-retardant fillers. All shingles have a mineral-granule surfacing on the weather side of the shingles, and sand surfacing on the unexposed side. The shingles are self-sealing, having a factory-applied self-sealing adhesive strip that is 5 / 8 inch (15.9 mm) wide and located approximately 6 1 / 4 inches (159 mm) above the shingle butt on the unexposed side of the shingle #230-Alaskan Shingles: The #230-Alaskan shingles are metric-sized, three-tab shingles. The shingles are 13 1 / 4 inches (336 mm) wide and 39 3 / 8 inches (1000 mm) long, and weigh approximately 235 pounds per 100 square feet (11.5 kg/m 2 ) when installed in accordance with this report #240-Hurricane Shingles: The #240-Hurricane shingles are similar to the #230-Alaskan shingles described in Section 2.2.2, except the mineral granule surfacing of the #240-Hurricane shingles includes proprietary mineral granules identified as 3M Algae Block Copper Roofing Granule System #272-Legacy-35: The #272-Legacy-35 shingles are laminated shingles that are 13 1 / 4 inches (336 mm) wide and 40 inches (1016 mm) long, and weigh approximately 275 pounds per 100 square feet (13.4 kg/m 2 ) when installed in accordance with this report #204-Dura-Seal 25: The #204-Dura-Seal 25 shingles are metric-sized, three-tab shingles. The shingles are 13 1 / 4 inches (336 mm) wide and 39 3 / 8 inches (1000 mm) long, and weigh approximately 235 pounds per 100 square feet (11.5 kg/m 2 ) when installed in accordance with this report Hip and Ridge Shingles: Hip and ridge shingles are the #230-Alaskan, #240-Hurricane and #204 Dura-Seal 25, three-tab shingles, field-cut to 13 1 / 4 inches by 13 1 / 8 inches (336 mm by 333 mm). See Figure Fasteners: Fasteners used to attach the shingles must be No. 12 gage, minimum 1 1 / 4 -inch-long (31.7 mm) galvanized roofing nails with 3 / 8 -inch-diameter (9.5 mm) heads. Fastener lengths must be sufficient for the fastener to penetrate 3 / 4 inch (19.1 mm) into the sheathing, or through the sheathing, whichever is less Underlayment: Roof underlayment must comply with the code Plastic Roof Cement and Asphalt Plastic Cement: Plastic roof cement and asphalt plastic cement must comply with ASTM D 4586 Type Installation New Construction: General: When installed on new construction in accordance with this section, the shingles are a Class A roof covering. The shingles must be installed in accordance with Table 15-B-1 of the code, except as noted in this report. See Figures 1 through 6 for typical installation details. The roof deck must be either code-complying, minimum 15 / 32 -inch-thick (11.9 mm) plywood, or nominal 1-by-8, tongue-and-groove, solid-sawn lumber sheathing, installed in accordance with the code Shingle Application: The shingles are installed with the vertical joints of each course of shingles offset 5 5 / 8 inches (143 mm) from the preceding course, and with a maximum exposure to the weather of 5 5 / 8 inches (143 mm). In colder climates or wind regions, where it is questionable whether the sealant strip will activate and seal the shingles, the shingles must be hand-sealed. For three-tab shingles, hand-sealing consists of placing two spots of plastic roof cement, approximately 1 / 2 inch (12.7 mm) in diameter, under each tab, near the lower corners. Hand-sealing of the laminated shingles consists of applying four quarter-sized spots of plastic roof cement to the back of the shingle, placed 1 inch and 13 inches (25 mm and 330 mm) in from each side, and 1 inch (25.4 mm) up from the bottom of the shingle. See Figure Shingle Fastening: For roof slopes of 2:12 to 12:12, each shingle is fastened to the roof deck using four fasteners, located as shown in Figures 8 and 10. For roof slopes exceeding 12:12, the shingles must be hand-sealed in accordance with Section 2.3.2, and six fasteners are used, with the fasteners located as shown in Figures 9 and 11. Evaluation reports of ICBO Evaluation Service, Inc., are issued solely to provide information to Class A members of ICBO, utilizing the code upon which the report is based. See Figures 12 and 13 for typical installation details Hip and Ridge Application: The hip and ridge shingles must be centered over hips and ridges, and must be fastened to the roof deck using two fasteners, one located on either side of the hip or ridge, 6 1 / 2 inches (165 mm) from the exposed end and 1 inch (25.4 mm) up from the shingle edge. Hip and ridge shingles must be installed with a maximum 5 5 / 8 -inch (143 mm) exposure to the weather. See Figure 15 for details. 2.4 Installation Reroofing: When the asphalt shingles described in this report are installed over existing Class A or Class C asphalt shingle roofs in accordance with this section, the roofing assemblies have a Class A roof classification. The existing asphalt roof shingle covering must be inspected in accordance with Section 1515 of Appendix Chapter 15 of the UBC. Prior to reroofing, hip and ridge cover must be removed, and a single layer of minimum Type 30, nonperforated felt underlayment must be installed over the existing asphalt shingles. The shingles are installed in accordance with Section 2.3 of this report. Fasteners must be of sufficient length to penetrate 3 / 4 inch (19.1 mm) into the sheathing, or through the sheathing, whichever is less.
