Advanced Priority Registration Spring 2014 Freshmen and Sophomore Nursing Students Advanced Priority Registration for BSN Freshmen and Sophomore Nursing Students in the School of Nursing is: November 7 and 8, 2013 Freshmen and Sophomores who do not take advantage of this opportunity must wait until the regular Advanced Registration begins. There are no exceptions to this rule. Advanced Registration for Spring, 2014 semester for full-time currently enrolled students runs: November 11, Faculty advisors post extra office hours before registration. The schedules are available in individual folders in PH421 or on the adviser s office door. It is the student s responsibility to make an appointment with their advisor. All advisors will have advising hours posted by October 29, Student must meet with their advisor to obtain their schedule. After talking with your academic advisor, the advisor will remove your academic hold, and then on November 7 and 8, 2013 freshman and sophomore nursing students can priority register online or go to the Registrar s Office. If you plan on going to the Registrar s Office, you will need the Nursing stamp from the secretary s office PH421 on your form. It is a good idea to get this in case online registration is not available. 3. MOVC students will participate in group registration sessions conducted by Professor Greene and Dr. Pope. Details will be provided at MOVC. Check for any updates. Freshmen and Pre-Nursing Students need to make an appointment with either Professor Greene or Dr. Pope.

SNA NEWS The Student Nurse Association would like to welcome any nursing student to our meetings, which are held the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month from1:30-2:30 pm in Prichard Hall, Room 427. Our mission is to mentor students preparing for initial licensure as registered nurses, an convey the standards, ethics and skills that students will need as responsible and accountable leaders and members of the profession. SNA is also a great way to meet students from higher level classes that can help with tutoring and advice. Membership is $10/year or $5/semester. Community service activities this semester will include: 1. Ronald McDonald House: collecting aluminum can tabs throughout the year (bring closed baggies of tabs to the meetings) and volunteering at Ronald McDonald House Chilifest fundraiser at Pullman Square (September 14th, sorry if you missed this one) 2. Flu Shot Clinics: October 15 & 16 (Sign up at meetings or with Dr. Widener), and 3. Adopting family (families) before Christmas. Fundraisers are also taking place to raise money to attend the NSNA Convention in Nashville, TN on April 9-13, Stethoscope sales went well thanks you to all. 2. SNA is selling t-shirts, sweaters, and sweat pants. If you are interested in SNA and would like more information, you can contact any SNA officer listed below or look for the webpage and Facebook pages for SNA Huntington. 3 2014 BSN Graduation Composite Pictures By Hedgecock s Photography You will be previewing your photograph at the session Pictures will be taken in Prichard Hall, Room 419. Keep watch on your for dates and times. The sign up sheet is currently being circulated. Cost $27.00 Includes sitting fee, and two NCLEX photos and 1 8x10 composite of BSN Class (must have your picture taken by Hedgecock s to be included in the composite) Please dress in a nice white shirt. NO T-shirts or stripes!!! MOVC students are encouraged to come to main campus. Hedgecocks can arrange with a photographer in your area to take these pictures for inclusion in the composite if you are unable to come to main campus. Additional photographs can be ordered: First sheet is $15.00 and additional sheets are $10.00 each. A sheet can be one 8X10 or two 5X7 s or four 4X5 s or one 5X7 and four wallets or 8 wallets. MOVC Nursing Christian Fellowship NCF would like to welcome any student, faculty, or staff to attend our meetings. This is a national organization of Christian nurses and nursing students meeting together for support, encouragement and the sharing of ideas on how to bring the Christian view into nursing care. This semester we are planning to work on activities within the community and at MOVC. The NCF invites all nursing students to attend monthly meetings held as announced. Nu Alpha News Dr. Rebecca Appleton and Dr. Sandra Prunty will be attending the 42nd Biennial Convention for Sigma Theta Tau International Honors Society of Nursing in November. *The date for the Induction Ceremony for new Nu Alpha members is tentatively scheduled for March 11, Invitations to join Nu Alpha Honors Society will be sent to qualifying junior, senior, and graduate students first part of Spring 2014 Semester. MOVC SNA Will be holding their first meeting September 16, 2013 at 12:00 PM in the MOVC Lab.

7 New Faculty Anita Kay Swartzwelder, PhD, MSN, RN, FNP-BC, CNE is an assistant professor of nursing within the Marshall University College of Health Professions. Prior to her position at Marshall, Professor Swartzwelder worked as an assistant professor of health technology at Ohio University and instructor in the nursing program. She also serves as an online adjunct professor for the College of Health Professions at Drexel University and the Chamberlain College of Nursing. She served as director of nursing at Collins Career Center in Chesapeake, Ohio for 16 years. Professor Swartzwelder received her Ph.D. in education from Capella University in 2011;; her M.S. in nursing with a nurse practitioner specialty from Marshall University in 2000;; her B.S. in nursing at Ohio University in 1992 and became a certified nurse educator in She is currently a member of the National League for Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society and the Ohio League for Nursing. Her research interests include improving learning techniques for her students she recently was published in the Nursing Education Perspectives for her work titled, Examining the effect of texting on students perception of learning. Professor Swartzwelder is very passionate about online teaching and will continue to find ways to engage students in an online educational environment. As a life-long resident of the Tri-state area, Professor Swartzwelder enjoys teaching students at her alma mater and being a part of the Marshall community. She remains active in the community and volunteers as a Family Nurse Practitioner at the Ebenezer Medical Outreach in Huntington and as chairperson of the Shawnee Mental Health Board of Directors. Paula Reilley, PhD, ARNP, CNS, MBA is an associate professor of nursing within the Marshall University College of Health Professions. Since fall 2013, Dr. Reilley has served as instructor for NUR 626 in the nurse practitioner program and NUR 322 in the BSN program. Prior to her position at Marshall, Professor Reilley taught nursing at the University of Charleston for 14 years;; and also at West Virginia State University for four years, Texas Tech University for two years and served as a teaching assistant at the University of Texas in Austin. She is a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner as well as certified as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult Psychiatric Nursing. In order to maintain her clinical expertise, she also works part-time as a nurse practitioner for Highland Hospital in Charleston, W.Va., on the substance abuse unit. Professor Reilley received her ADN from West Liberty State College in 1973;; her BSN from West Liberty State College in 1981;; her MSN from WVU in 1985;; her Ph.D. in nursing from The University of Texas at Austin in 1993;; and her MBA from The University of Charleston in In addition to her extensive academic background, Professor Reilley is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, a member of the board for Highland Hospital, and a member of the International Club in Charleston. Her research interests include substance abuse, addictions, self-defeating behavior patterns, and drug-screening policies in BSN and other nursing programs in the United States. Professor Reilley is very passionate about education she wants to provide her students with value-added education, allowing her to be more effective as an educator and ultimately, giving her students the tools needed to work safely and competently with patients. She is excited to be at a public institution such as Marshall University and to be teaching in the graduate nursing department. Theodore Fox, DNP, RN, BSN, CPEN is an Assistant Professor of Nursing within the Marshall University College of Health Professions. Professor Fox received his DNP from Florida State University in 2013, his BSN from Florida State University in 2009, and his ASN from Florida Community College in He also serves the Florida Air National Guard Reserves as a Critical Care Nurse. Dr. Fox is very passionate and finds much satisfaction instructing students in developing their hands on skills in clinical and skills labs. He believes strongly that one-on-one interaction is essential in overcoming challenges and developing skills for the clinical environment. His philosophy in teaching is that quality in instruction creates quality nurses. Dr. Fox will serve as an instructor in NUR 221, NUR 222, NUR 323, and NUR 334.
