1 Day 4 - Nagykanizsa Hévíz Zala county In the south-western corner of Hungary, between the Lake Balaton and the River Mura lies Zala County which still preserves its ancient natural beauty. All the visitors are fascinated by this varied-surfaced region, this land is the world of the hills covered with forests and the brooks splashing in the valleys. The history of this region dates back to thousands of years, the River Zala giving its name to the region was known as Salla by the Romans. In the place of Mosaburg conquested by the ancient Hungarian conquerors, our king Saint Stephen built the centre of the first Hungarian county. The ancient abbeys, whitewashed small churches, castle-ruins evocate the Middle Ages, the yellow-white coloured Baroque buildings evocate the revival after the Turkish devastation. Zala County proudly preserving its own traditions is a dynamically developing region with a promising future, developing economy, constructions fitting the landscape and with friendly people. This is a myriad-minded scenery, providing an abundant gold-mine for a photographer. Tourism The county attracts more and more visitors with its untouched natural beauties, the romantic forests of Göcsej and Bakony, where the one-time highwayman called Jóska Sobri was hidden, as well as with the untouched wildlife of Small Balaton, the beaches of the "Hungarian sea" and the thermal baths. 2 Overview of the etap Nagykanizsa Hévíz Zalasárszeg The settlement was first mentioned in 1323 as Sarzegh, from 1908 it is called Zalasárszeg. The name origins from two words ( sár slob and szeg - pole), Zala refers to the county. 3 Galambok The first mention of the settlement origins from 1231 as Golombuk. According to an official document from 1420 the settlement was located next to an important military route. In 1550s as the nearby settlements Galambok was hit by the Turks. This time the village was hit not only by the Turks but also the defense army. The population living on animal-husbandry decayed. At the end of the 17 th century new buildings were built by the new owners of the village. Created fruit gardens and pough-lands. In a few years there were no empty field in the surroundings. At the end of the 18 th and the beginning of the 19 th century the settlement developed quickly. After the compromise of 1867 started the population growth. Most of the inhabitants run on animalhusbandry and the poor people were employed by the nearby manors. 4 Zalakaros Zalakaros is located in the south-west part of Zala county. Zalakaros and surroundings is the touristic center of the region. From point of view of nights spent in commercial accommodation Zalakaros is the 8th most popular in Hungary. The first mention of the settlement origins from 1254 as Korus. During the Turk the settlement was hit by army of Turk and defense army as well. By this the population totally desolated. The settlement started to develop only at the end of the 19 th century after drainage of marsh. By 1920s the town was connected to busnet. The post office was built also this time. After the second world war started migraion direction to developing industrial Nagykanizsa. In 1962 thermal water was explored in the territory of the settlement, in 1965 opened the thermalbath, since the opening was visited by more than 20 million tourists. Thanks to the bath the tourism started to develop in the town. Tourism From point of view of nights spent in commercial accommodation Zalakaros is the 8th most popular in Hungary by number of nights (2012); the most of tourists come from Germany (66 000), Austria (27 000) and Czech republic (15 000). The town is famous for its thermal bath. Zalakaros, the tiniest city of Hungary, gained its fame in 1967, when an oil prospect drilling resulted in a nearly 96 C (205 F) hot thermal spring coming up from 1000 meter. The certified medical water proved very effective in the treatment of chronic arthritis, chronic gynaecological, dental and rheumatic diseases, and prior to and after orthopaedic surgeries, neurosurgeries and operations. 5 Garabonc In the cemetery of the village lies Ferenc Németh, jockey of the Hungarian marvelous horse, Imerpial. The name of Rada was first mentioned in 1019 in a document of Zalavár bishopry of Saint Stephen. The name Rada originally is a Slavonic name of person. By the 1500s Rada developed to an important settlement. During the Turks the settlement was ruined. In 1655 the settlement belonged to assets of Treasury. The next years the surrounding was mentioned as barren. After 1690 the settlements starts to develop again. New living houses were built and the agriculture started to develop. The main job of the inhabitants were fishing, viniculture and winemaking. 6 Zalaszabar Zalaszabar lies between the western shore of Small Lake, the lake and Keszthely southwest 22 km from Hévíz, environmentally beautiful countryside, forests, bounded by rolling hills. Thanks to the Hévíz-lake, which is only in the world natural thermal lake, the settlement is highly popular point of health tourism.
