1 Job Aid - Configuring the Internet Explorer Browser for NANTeL Usage SCOPE This Job Aid will provide directions for configuring the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser, versions 8, 9 and 10. These are the browsers currently supported by NANTeL. Other browsers such as Internet Explorer 11, Firefox, Safari, Opera and Chrome may not work correctly and may be blocked from entering the NANTeL website. Page 6 Clearing the browser s cache...page 10 This Job Aid assumes you are working on your own personal computer, or you have authorization to change the browser settings on the computer you are using. If you are using a utility or company computer always contact the appropriate Information Technology personnel. 1
2 TOPICS Displaying the browser menu bar: Typically the Internet Explorer browser displays a menu bar near the top left-hand corner of the application. This menu bar allows you to access settings to configure various aspects of the browser s privacy, security, operability, look and behavior. The browser menu typically resembles the following image. On occasion, you may find that the menu is not visible. There are different methods that can be used to display the menu bar. To show the menu temporarily, press the Alt key on the keyboard. This will toggle the menu on and off. Another key board shortcut is the F10 key. This key displays the menu but does not toggle the menu off. Another key click or action outside of the menu will however, hide the menu again. To configure the browser to display the menu at all times, perform the following steps: Right mouse click on the header of the browser. A popup menu will display. Click the Menu bar selection to configure the browser to display the menu as a default. 2
3 Determining your version of Internet Explorer: It s helpful to know what version of Internet Explorer you are using. If you ever need to call or the NANTeL Help Desk support center, providing the version of the Internet Explorer browser you are using is very important to help identify and resolve any problem you may be having. There are typically multiple methods that may be used to access and set browser options. In this example, as well as others found in this Job Aid, we will refrain from providing the many methods in favor of one or two that are consistent across the browsers. To access a dialog box displaying the version of the browser perform the following steps: From the browser menu bar select Help. From the menu, select About Internet Explorer. The browser will display a dialog box with the browser s major and minor version information. 3
4 Alternately, you can access the same dialog box by clicking on the Gear icon located on the upper righthand corner of the browser and selecting the About Internet Explorer menu item. Enabling Pop-up Windows: There are a couple of different methods used to turn off and on pop-up blockers. The quickest is to click on Tools in the browser menu bar. From the menu select Pop-up Blocker. This will open a sub-menu from which you can select Turn off Pop-up Blocker. 4
5 Another method used to turn on and off the pop-up blocker requires a few additional steps. Again click on Tools in the browser menu bar. From the menu select Internet options. A dialog box will open. Click on the Privacy tab. Find the Pop-up Blocker section and clear the check box from Turn on Pop-up Blocker. After completing your NANTeL training you should turn the pop-up blocker back on. 5
6 Enabling Compatibility View In order to access and display some of the NANTeL site and courses in Internet Explorer 10, it should be configured to enable Compatibility view. This allows the browser to display web content that was developed in the past using older (and some outdated) standards. If the log on page to the NANTeL site appears like the following image, you will need to set your browser to enable Compatibility view. The next image shows that the page is rendered correctly and has enabled Compatibility view. The quickest method to enable Compatibility view is to click on the Compatibility view button on the upper right-hand side of the browser. The difference in the icon appearance is subtle and it may be difficult to determine what mode the browser is in. 6
7 This screen capture shows the icon as a broken piece of paper. The icon does not appear recessed so the browser is not in Compatibility view. To invoke Compatibility view you can click on the Compatibility view icon. This screen capture shows the icon appearing recessed with a slight shadow effect. The browser is in Compatibility view. Another method is to click on Tools on the browser menu bar. From the menu click on the Compatibility View item. 7
8 A check mark should appear next to the selection indicating that Compatibility view is enabled. As an alternative, you can add specific websites like NANTeL to a list of sites that the browser will automatically invoke Compatibility view. From the Tools menu select Compatibility View settings. 8
9 A dialog box will open with the current website address in the Add this website: text field. Click the Add button to add the site. A successful addition should appear like the following screen capture. The browser will now enable Compatibility view when accessing the NANTeL website. 9
10 Clearing the browser s cache: Of course there are a couple different methods that can be used to clear the browser s cache. Click on Tools in the browser menu bar. From the Tools menu select Delete browsing history As an alternative to using the Tools menu you can (carefully) use the keyboard combination of Ctrl+Shift+Del. Alternately, you can click on the Internet options menu item from the Tools menu or the Gear icon. 10
11 This action will open the Internet Options dialog panel. On the General tab, locate the Browsing history section and click on the Delete.. button. Both of the methods described will result in the display of the Delete Browsing History dialog box. 11
12 On the Delete Browsing History dialog, check or uncheck the selections as indicated in order to adequately remove the browser s stored files: Uncheck Preserve Favorites website data Check Temporary Internet files Check Cookies Check History Check Download History CAUTION: This action will not remove your saved Favorites, but it will remove the list of recently visited websites and information cookies that are acquired from various websites. Click on the Delete button. Depending on the number of files your browser has stored, this process may take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. When the process is complete your browser should display a dialog box indicating that the history has been deleted. When the browsing history has been deleted, it is best to close your browser and restart it again. When accessing the NANTeL site again, your browser will display the new course content and refresh its cache. NANTeL - PAF 12
