5 studying... in Holland 3 Choosing your studies Institutions of higher education Holland has two main types of higher education institutions: <Research universities <Universities of applied sciences Research universities focus on the independent practice of researchoriented work in academic or professional settings. Universities of applied sciences are more practically-oriented, preparing students directly for specific careers. There are government-funded institutions entitled to award officially recognized degrees and legally protected titles to graduates of their accredited programmes. To obtain government funding, institutions must satisfy a number of quality requirements. Government-approved institutions are not funded by the Government, but have the right to award officially recognized degrees and legally protected titles to graduates of their accredited programmes. Private institutions that have not applied for government funding or approval: the fact that an institution is not government funded or governmentapproved does not necessarily mean that the quality they provide is below par. They cannot offer accreditation for Bachelors programmes. RESEARCH UNIVERSITIES The Netherlands have 18 universities and institutions which train students for independent practice of sciences. The universities do not all have programmes of education and research in the same disciplines. Nine of them offer education in a broad range of fields: natural sciences, health, economics, law, behaviour and society, language and culture. Among those institutions you may find the universities of Leiden, Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Groningen, Utrecht, Maastricht, Nijmegen, Tilburg, Rotterdam, Wageningen, Nyenrode, Twente and the Open University.

6 4 Three universities specialize mainly in engineering (Delft, Twente, Eindhoven), and one specializes in agriculture (Wageningen). Alongside the traditional institutions is the Open University, which offers higher education distance learning (some of its study programmes are in English). UNIVERSITIES OF APPLIED SCIENCES (Hogescholen) The «Hogescholen» are degreeawarding institutions which concentrate on applied sciences, arts and technology. Students are prepared for professions that require scientific knowledge as well as skills for applying that knowledge. There are 41 institutions of this kind in the Netherlands. 8 6 Diplomas Bachelors degrees A Bachelors programme at a university requires three years of fulltime studies while a Bachelors programme offered by a university of applied sciences requires four years of full-time studies. The last year of studies is taken up mainly by an individual project and thesis; this too usually involves solving a real problem in a professional setting. Advanced programmes are available in virtually all these sectors.they can last anywhere between 2 weeks and 2 years. Some lead to postgraduate diplomas, and some to accredited Masters degrees. Masters degrees Depending on the discipline, Masters programmes at universities, universities of applied sciences and institutes for International Education last one to two years. PhD The doctorate (PhD) is only offered at universities and takes at least four years. A Master s degree is compulsory for admission. «Studiepunten» In the Bachelor-Master system the value of each subject is indicated in «Studiepunten». One Studiepunt is equivalent to a workload of 28 hours (university attendance or Hogeschool plus the time used for personal preparation). An academic year consists of 42 weeks at 40 hours per week (a total of 1690 hours). At the beginning of every academic year, students are informed of the value in points for every subject. Dutch teaching methods The Dutch teaching style is interactive and student-centred. It focuses on teamwork, which makes it easy to meet other international students. A large part of all study programmes is dedicated to writing papers and working in groups (team-work) to analyse and solve specific problems. You will also get a chance to get practical work experience through internships or do experiments in laboratories, depending on the field of study. Interaction in class is highly appreciated. You are expected to think about the knowledge that is presented to you and develop and express your own opinion.

9 studying... in Holland 7 GETTING IN Entry Requirements The main requirement for admission to a Bachelors programme is a secondaryschool diploma at the appropriate level. Foreign students must have a diploma judged equivalent to the minimum diploma required. There are also study programmes - in the arts for example - for which institutions set their own additional requirements. The institutions may set additional requirements, such as knowledge of the Dutch language and secondary-school specialization in specific subjects. Most courses taught in English are not subject to Numerus Clausus. The exception include medicine, psychology, economics and physiotherapy. The allocation of places on courses with Numerus Clausus is done by the Dutch Goverment through a weighted lottery. However this is more common for programmes taught in Dutch than in English! The allocation of places takes place via a centralised or decentralised selection process. Language requirements If you want to attend a Dutch-taught study programme, you will generally need to pass the state examination in Dutch as a second language (NT2). However, some higher education institutes have their own language test. Furthermore, it is essential for foreign students to be able to properly speak, read and write English (especially if they want to attend a degree course held in English). Students must have passed an English language test. IELTS and TOEFL are commonly accepted. Learning Dutch You will usually have to learn to speak Dutch if you plan on enrolling as a regular student, unless you plan to follow an international course in English. There are various possibilities to learn Dutch, especially in the months prior to the start of the academic year. Most institutions of higher education and NUFFIC offer Dutch lessons for foreign students.

10 8 APPLYING FOR STUDIES Deadlines and procedures To be admitted to a programme of higher studies, you should first contact the institution offering the programme. Deadlines for applications at universities and Hogescholen are usually the 1st May. However, as there are always exceptions, it is worthwhile checking directly with the institution you are interested in. In all cases you need to have set up your account on studielink by 1st May. Tuition fees The fees that foreign students pay for registration and tuition vary from one institution to the next, since the institutions set these fees themselves. Standard tuition fees for students from EU countries are per year for most courses. For English-taught programmes, as well as Masters degrees, tuition fees might be much higher. Students can use the Studielink website, to arrange their enrolment or re-enrolment at an institution of higher education in the Netherlands. It offers a single point of access for students to enrol, de-enrol or pass on any change of address. Students can enter and check information which they can then access and use whenever they need it. This also applies for all bodies involved in the enrolment process, including universities of applied sciences and universities.

11 studying... in Holland 9 LIVING & STUDYING Living Costs A foreign student usually needs between 800 and a month to cover daily expenses and housing. Financial assistance for studying CEDIES grants scholarships and loans (at a 2% interest rate per year) for studying in higher education (Aide financière de l Etat pour études supérieures). The application for this support has to be completed for the winter term, online between 1st August and 30th November aides.etudes.lu Student housing If you are taking part in an exchange programme or are enrolled in an international course, it is quite possible that a room will be arranged for you. Otherwise it is common for students to find their own rented rooms on the private market. Information about student housing is given by the international relations office An average room in Holland costs anywhere between 300 and 600 a month.

12 10 Conditions for entry There are no specific requirements concerning residence permits and insurance for students who are citizens of the European Union. These students rarely need a residence permit (institutions of higher education might however recommend it in order to get some advantages with libraries, public transport, sports facilities etc.). To get this permit from the Alien police Department or from the Immigration Departments of the municipalities, you must give proof that you are registered at an institution of higher education. Working and studying As a foreign student in the Netherlands, you might want to take on a part-time job. Students from EUcountries do not need a specific work permit. Social security The Carte européenne d assuré(e) is usually a sufficient proof of insurance. Driving licence and car matriculation The European Commission indicates that, as there is a mutual recognition of national driving licences, foreign students have no obligation to exchange their national driving licence in order to get a foreign one. There is also no need to get the vehicle matriculated.
