1 ROAD MAP: Transferring Degrees, Applying GEDs and Making Transitions to the University The main person to contact for this process is Jasiel Perez in the Office of Admissions. He is the Associate Director of Admissions and can be contacted at or Please tell him you are from the President s EDGE program. 1) No High School Diploma or GED 1. UNT Admissions is not involved until student completes the GED course and passes the assessment. 2. Once the GED test is passed, the student now moves to step 1 or step 3. Step 1 is the Uniform Admissions policy. The student must meet the Texas Recommended High School Plan (HSP) or Advanced HSP before they can be evaluated. a. ACT 18 English, 22 Math, 22 Reading, 24 Science b. SAT 1500 out of Step 3 If the student is a Texas resident, he can be exempted by the following: a. The student is a child of a public servant listed in TX. Gov. code who has been killed or sustained a fatal injury in the line of duty. b. Complete the Certification for Admissions to a Texas Public University form provided by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) and have completed a portion of the Recommended HSP or Advanced HSP with one of the following reasons: i. Course schedule conflicts ii. Lack of enrollment capacity iii. Another cause not within the student s control 4. If an Out of State/International student does not meet the benchmarks, they will need to complete the Certification for Admissions to a Texas Public University form with one of the following exceptions: a. The courses taken are equivalent to the Recommended HSP or Advanced HSP

2 b. The student completed a portion of the Recommended HSP or Advanced HSP and could not complete the curriculum for one of the following reasons: i. Course scheduling conflicts ii. Lack of enrollment capacity iii. Another cause not within the student s control 5. If a student graduates from a Department of Defense (DOD) school and does not meet benchmarks, they will need to meet the same requirements as an Out-of- State student. 2) Student with High School Diploma from another country 1. Students need to verify their transcripts from their native country through general admissions which pass and confirm the information with International Admissions. 2. Do not personally go through international but through general admissions. If there is a personal copy of their diploma, transcript, certification, etc., it will make the process smoother. International Admissions can take originals, photocopies, faxes or forms of that nature because they realize universities sometimes only make one nice copy. These students move to the next step when this is complete. 3) Non-traditional Students (GED Completed): 1. Students with a GED will be required to meet the SAT/ACT benchmarks prior to ARC review (Under 5 years out of school). 2. Adult Admit students will need to meet the same requirements as an Out-of-State student if they do not meet the benchmark requirements. Once student has his GED he needs to establish he is college ready. He needs to follow the steps above and can do so in two ways:

3 1. Community College a. The student could take the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) or other exam to apply to a community college. For NCTC they accept the THEA or the Compass. The THEA costs $29. Once the THEA is passed with a 230 in reading, 230 in math, and a 220 in writing, the student is eligible to take classes at a junior or community college. b. The student must then take at least a one credit course and pass to before able transferring to UNT. 2. The student may take the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) which is offered at UNT. a. The tests are administered in the Gateway Center, room 140. b. The times are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 8:00 am-3:00 pm every week except holidays. c. Each exam is $72 dollars payable by credit card, check, or money order to CLEP on the day of the exam. d. There is an additional $20 registration fee payable in cash or money order to UNT on the day of the exam. e. Total fees are $92. f. Call to confirm the test is being given on the date you plan to test. g. Bring a photo ID with your fees on the day of the test.
