1 Technical Meeting on Lessons Learned from Past Emergency Preparedness Review (EPREV) Missions IAEA Headquarters Vienna, Austria July 2014 Information Sheet and Call for Abstracts A. Background The International Atomic Energy Agency s (IAEA) Emergency Preparedness Review (EPREV) service provides an independent appraisal, against IAEA safety standards, of preparedness and response arrangements for a nuclear or radiological emergency in Member States. Between 2004 and 2013, 32 EPREV missions (including EPREV follow-up missions) were carried out in 30 Member States. The missions were conducted by teams of experts from 30 countries. This meeting will consider the lessons learned from the past ten years of implementing EPREV missions in order to further strengthen the EPREV service for future missions. B. Objectives The meeting aims to promote an open discussion on: 1. Recent enhancements of the EPREV forces and trends related to the implementation of EPREV missions 2. Experiences related to implementation of EPREV missions 3. The self-assessment process and results 4. Ways to strengthen EPREV missions and follow-up actions

Participation The target audience includes national managers, planners and responders involved in the development of emergency preparedness and response arrangements at the national, local or facility level. The meeting is also targeted at experts who participated as team members during previous EPREV missions, as their experience regarding the implementation of such missions could make a strong contribution towards achieving the meeting s objectives. A person will be eligible to participate only if nominated by the Government of an IAEA Member State (e.g. Ministry of Foreign Affairs or National Atomic Energy Authority) or by an organization invited to participate. Nominations (submitted using the attached Form A) and, if applicable, proposed abstracts (accompanied by Form B, also attached) should be received by the IAEA not later than 16 May D. Submission of Abstracts, Presentations and Posters Designated experts from IAEA Member States are encouraged to give a presentation during the meeting. Those experts must submit their work in the form of a one-page abstract relevant to the objectives of the meeting. This abstract should be submitted together with a completed Form for Submission of an Abstract (Form B) and Participation Form (Form A) to the competent authority for subsequent electronic transmission to the IAEA Scientific Secretary (see Section I below). Authors are urged to make use of the Abstract Template available on the meeting web page (see Section J below). In order to provide ample time for discussion, the number of abstracts that can be accepted for oral presentation is limited. If the number of relevant and high quality abstracts submitted for selection exceeds the acceptable number, some of them may be selected for poster presentation instead. Authors will be informed whether their abstracts have been accepted for oral or poster presentation. The presentation or poster should be submitted before the deadline established in Section H. The IAEA Scientific Secretary reserves the right to exclude abstracts that do not comply with the IAEA s quality standards and/or do not apply to one of the objectives of the meeting. E. Financial Support The IAEA is generally not in a position to bear the travel and other costs of participants in the meeting. The IAEA has, however, limited funds at its disposal to help meet the cost of attendance of certain participants. Such assistance may be offered upon specific request to normally one participant per country provided that, in the IAEA s view, the participant on whose behalf assistance is requested will make an important contribution to his or her State s emergency preparedness and response arrangements. The application for financial support should be made at the time of nominating the participant.

3 Page 3 F. Local Arrangements It is expected that the meeting will start on Monday, 14 July 2014, and conclude on Thursday, 17 July Specific times will be reflected in the meeting agenda. It is the responsibility of all participants to make their own travel arrangements to/from Austria. Detailed information on accommodation, local transport to/from the meeting venue, and other organizational details, will be sent to all designated participants well in advance of the meeting. The working language of the meeting is English. No translation will be provided. G. Visas Designated participants who require a visa to enter Austria should submit the necessary application to the nearest diplomatic or consular representative of Austria well in advance of entry. An official letter of invitation will be issued to all designated participants by the IAEA Scientific Secretary. H.
