1 Before Getting Started This brief document will take you through the simple process of creating a Kaviza grid on Citrix XenServer hypervisor using a Windows 7 image. The Quick Start Guide requires you have a machine running XenServer already in place. If you need assistance with installing the XenServer hypervisor, please see the XenServer product documentation. Other items to make sure you have before proceeding are as follows; XenCenter Windows Volume License DHCP server 1.1 Kaviza VDI-in-box virtual appliance The Kaviza VDI-in-a-box virtual appliance can be downloaded from the Kaviza website at Click on the Free Trial button and register with your to get access to the software. 1.2 Hardware Requirements Refer to the Kaviza System Requirements and Supported Platforms for details. At a minimum you should have a server with at least one dual core processor, 8GB of RAM and 250GB of storage. Such a system will provide enough performance for a handful of desktops (4 to 5 desktops). 4

2 Import and Configure the Kaviza VDI-in-a-box virtual appliance The Kaviza VDI-in-a-box is designed to be easy to install and configure. This section describes how to set up the various components of Kaviza s VDI-in-abox. 2.1 Download the Kaviza VDI-in-a-box appliance For Xen Server installation: The download package (Kaviza_VDI-in-a-box_kMGR_Xen_Server_v4.1.zip) contains the Kaviza_VDI_kMGR_ESX_v4_1.ovf file in the following folder location: XVA Name the Kaviza_VDI_kMGR_XenServer_v4_1.xva Note: About 1.9 GB of disk space is required to extract these files. 5

2.2 Import the kmgr virtual appliance For this task simply import the appliance using XenCenter console and power it on. 1. Locate the Kaviza_VDI_kMGR_XenServer_v4_1.xva file 2. Import the Kaviza_VDI_kMGR_XenServer_v4_1.xva file using XenCenter console. a. Using XenCenter, access the XenServer and highlight the server icon. b. Click on the menu File -> Import. c. Follow instructions to locate and import the Kaviza_VDI_kMGR_XenServer_v4_1.xva file. Below is a sample screen-shot from XenCenter. d. Once the import is successful, you should see it listed as a VM. e. Please make note of the IP address assigned to the Kaviza VM. You will need it to login to the kmgr web-based console. Note: Note: The kmgr appliance is set up with Network 0 as the default, network adapter label. If you do not have this network label, please use the network label drop down list and choose the appropriate network label For a proof-of-concept it is fine to leave kmgr with a dynamically assigned IP address. For instructions on configuring kmgr with a Static IP, please see the Kaviza VDIin-a-box Installation Guide. 6

2.2.1 Configure the Kaviza Grid In this task, you are creating a Kaviza grid by configuring the first Kaviza server on the XenServer hypervisor. Login to the kmgr console of the first server using a browser: address]/admin ( Example: Enter kavizaadmin for the User name and kaviza for the password. Step 1 Hypervisor configuration: In the first step connect kmgr to the hypervisor running the appliance. You will need to enter specifics about the hypervisor including its IP address or DNS name and provide credentials for an account with root privilege. CAUTION: Kaviza will NOT allow setting up a server that is a part of a XenServer pool. As servers are added to a Kaviza grid it creates a pool of its own and provides high-availability without requiring shared storage. 7

a. Enter the information for the hypervisor connection IP Address/Name User Name(root privilege) Password b. You need to select a data store by clicking on the Browse button. Doing so will fetch the list of data stores and network connections available to desktops. c. Select the datastore from the pop-up panel Once you select the datastore, you will see this entry displayed on the screen d. Select the Network connection from the drop-down list. 8

Once you select the network connection, you will see the network label displayed on the screen. e. Once all entries are filled in, click on the Save button to save this setting. Step 2 Grid configuration: To create a grid, do the following a. Choose the option Create a new Kaviza grid. You will see an entry for the grid name displayed on the screen. b. Enter the name for your grid and click the Save button to save this setting. Step 3 Specify the user database server: Since this is the first server in the grid, it needs to be tied to a user database. You can choose an external database such as an Active directory server (2003 or 2008 ) to fetch the list of users and groups who can have access to Kaviza virtual desktops. Alternatively, you can create a database of users in a Kaviza maintained user database. Use this latter option if you will be using Windows Workgroups or some other non-microsoft user database (e.g. Novell edirectory). 9

Choose the option Use an external database (e.g. Active Directory) to connect to an external database. a. Enter the following information for the external user database connection IP Address/Name DNS Domain User Name (Domain administrator or any other domain user should work. For better management create a new user account with admin privilege for Kaviza grid and use the same account for all active directory related operations ) Password b. Once all entries are filled in, click on the Save button to save this setting. 10

Choose the option Use Kaviza database to set the image in Workgroup mode. a. No additional details will be required when you choose this option. b. Click on the Save button to save this setting. Once you are done with all the 3 steps, you can close the setup screen by clicking the Close button at the bottom of the screen. 11

3 Create the first Windows 7 base image The Kaviza VDI-in-a-box is designed to be simple to use and manage. This section walks you through the step by step tasks required to create the first image in Kaviza. 3.1 Create a Windows 7 VM This task is carried out from OUTSIDE the Kaviza product using XenCenter. You can create a VM either from an.iso image or by doing a P2V conversion using the tools of your choice. Please refer to the related Citrix Xen server document for creating a new VM from an ISO image. We strongly recommend creating a pristine VM from an ISO image. 3.2 Verify the Windows 7 VM selection criteria Before importing the VM into Kaviza, Ensure that your VM meets the following selection criteria: CAUTION: The VM you are trying to import must meet all of the following criteria. 1. The VM is 'Started' and is in a 'Powered On' state. 2. It is a Microsoft Windows XP Professional (32-bit) or a Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit) Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate VM. 3. Remote connections needs to be enabled on the VM 4. The VM should have only one NIC card and it should be assigned to device The VM has only one disk image. 3.3 Windows 7 (32-bit or 64 bit) Pre-import steps These steps are completed outside the kmgr using your hypervisor tools. You need to complete these steps before you import the VM into kmgr. 1. Activate the VM using a proper Microsoft Volume Activation (VA) key to ensure activation of provisioned desktops. The two options available for activation are Multiple Activation Key (MAK) or Key Management Service (KMS). Refer to 12

for more details 2. Enable local administrator account on the Windows 7 VM. This account is disabled by default. a. Launch the cmd prompt in elevated mode- Make sure you select, 'Run as administrator' when launching this command b. On the command window, run the following commands - net user administrator <youradminpassword> - net user administrator /active:yes 3. Install XenCenter tools. 4. Join the machine to the domain ( not required for workgroup). 5. Log into the desktop as a local administrator and enable remote connections for your end users a. On the desktop, navigate to My Computers > properties. b. Navigate to the remote tab and check the allow users to connect remotely option. c. Click select users and add individual users or active directory security group. 13

6. Enable Windows firewall setting to allow remote desktop connections for all networks (Home, Work and Public). 3.4 Importing the VM into Kaviza Please follow the steps below to import the VM: 1. Log into the Kaviza management console as an administrator a. Open a browser window and type in the following URL: kmgr address]/admin 14

User name: kavizaadmin Password: kaviza b. If this a brand new grid, you will be taken to the Welcome page. c. Click the Get Started button. d. You will be taken to the import a VM step. 2. Import the VM to as a draft image and start it up. a. In the popup select the Windows VM that you would like to bring into Kaviza and hit OK. 15

16 b. Troubleshooting step. Skip if your VM is available on importable VM list. If you do not find your VM in the Importable list, highlight the Unimportable VMs entry to find out why it cannot be imported.

c. You will be prompted to provide a new Name and a Description for the copied draft image as shown below: d. The imported VM will be copied and a draft image will be created and powered up by kmgr. This operation may take a few minutes to complete. A progress bar along with the status of each intermediate step will be provided in the Task/Event bar at the bottom of the screen. 17

3.5 Five step process to create a published image You will be taken to Step 1 of the 5 step draft image wizard. Note: Click the to re-enter the wizard. Each step of the wizard contains a help icon. The help provides the details on what needs to be done at each step Step 1: Installing the desktop agent In step 1 you will install the Kaviza Desktop Agent. This is the agent that will reside on each desktop created from the template. kmgr will manage communications to the desktops via this agent. Best Practice: Installing the Kaviza Desktop Agent as a Local Administrator is highly recommended. This will give you better control when setting up the drivers, applications, profiles and other settings for your user s desktops. 18

Follow the instructions on the screen to install the Kaviza desktop agent. a. When status shows as Running click on Connect icon and login as local administrator. b. Download and install the dtagent from the url showed on the wizard. Accept the SSL security warnings. Tips: To login as local administrator specify.\administrator and password. The dot refer to local computer name. 19

Note: If you do not see a file download, check your network settings. Proxy settings might prevent this download from happening. Disable the proxy settings temporarily to allow the download to proceed. Once the download proceeds and you have successfully installed the Kaviza Desktop Agent, you can enable the proxy settings on the image. c. Click on the Run button. A Security warning dialog will be shown: d. Click on the Run button to start the installation. You will see the welcome screen as shown below: 20

j. Click OK to confirm completion of the installation. You will see the Completing the setup screen shown below: k. Click on the Finish button. The draft image will be rebooted. The Kaviza Desktop Agent is now installed! Do not uncheck the Launch Kaviza Desktop Agent checkbox. If unchecked the desktop will not restart automatically to proceed further and admin has to manually restart the desktop. l. The Next button on wizard should now be activated in kmgr and will allow you to move to Step 2 where you can edit the draft image Step 2. Editing the draft image 24 In Step 2 of the draft image wizard, you may edit the draft image as you see fit, e.g., upgrading or patching the desktop, setting up user conveniences, and updating or installing applications. You must also complete the checklist in order to continue to the next step. The checklist helps guarantee that all prerequisites outside of Kaviza are met for the image to successfully produce desktops.

Use the CONNECT button to connect via RDP to the draft image and work on the desktop in order to set it up as you wish and complete the checklist. After the checklist is complete and you are ready to turn it into an image, you may proceed to Step 3. If you need to restart or shut down the draft image, those controls can be found in the "More..." operations. Once you have completed editing the draft image click on Next to proceed to the next step. Note: In Windows 7 non-english version the Remote desktop users will not be automatically copied to Direct RDP Access Administrators. The Kaviza administrator should manually add appropriate users and Active directory security groups to enable RDP connection. a. Click on start b. Right click on computer and select manage. c. Click on local users and groups. d. Click on groups. e. Double click on Direct RDP Access Administrators. f. Click Add and add required users and Active directory security groups. 25

3.5.3 Step 3: Preparing the draft image Follow the help in the wizard to prepare the image. You will need to fill out all the required fields in order to properly run the Microsoft sysprep utility. 26

A few things to note: 1. If you are preparing an image to be in a domain, then when specifying the domain account ensure it is an administrator account that has the privileges to add and remove computers from the domain. 2. Select a Time zone. 3. Specify a computer name prefix or use the default prefix. 4. Select an appropriate activation method. If you are not sure then go with the default selection (MAK). 5. For Device Drivers go with the default option (Re-install device driver during sysprep). 6. Click on Prepare icon under operations. 7. The sysprep process is lengthy. You can close the wizard and return to it or you can keep the wizard up and view the status of the operation. a. The status of the working image will change to PREPARING b. Once the sysprep process successfully completes, the status of the desktop will change to PREPARED. c. The system will pre-generate a disposal test desktop from the syprepped candidate image and will take you to Step 4 of the draft image wizard. Note: The Next button will be activated only if the sysprep was successful. 27

3.5.4 Step 4: Testing the prepared desktop image Kaviza automatically creates a candidate test image from the sysprepped image. Please connect to the test image to ensure it is functioning as required. The test image is disposable. Any changes made to the test image will NOT be saved. a. Click on Connect using the HDX protocol and login a user and verify whether installed programs are functioning properly and required group policies are applied. If you grid is configured with Active directory then login any domain user who got remote access to that desktop. b. Logout c. Click on Connect using the RDP protocol and login a user to verify the RDP connection. d. Logout. A set of checklist test items have been provided as a guide. Please check each item in order to move to the final step of the five step process. The checklist helps guarantee that desktops generated from the candidate image work the way you want them to. The Kaviza Manager itself runs a series of tests on the test desktop to make sure that there is nothing wrong with it. This test desktop is a single instance generated from the candidate image. 28

If you find problems with the test desktop or want to change the draft image that generated it, click the Back button. Please note that this will destroy the test image and will reopen the candidate image as a working draft image Step 5: Saving the image Click on the Save button to save the image as a published image. This is a lengthy operation. Once the image is saved the draft image sub-line will disappear in the main console window and the status of the image will change to Published. Once an image is in the published stage it can be used by a template to create desktops. Note that if you have multiple servers in the grid, the published image will be distributed to the other servers. A prominent label will appear stating that the system is distributing the image. During the distribution process it is important that you refrain from making fundamental changes to the grid such as removing servers or changing the IP address of a Kaviza server. 29

4 Creating the first template from the published image Templates are molds from which desktops are created. A template consists of an image and properties that specify characteristics of the desktops generated from the template. An image is the OS (e.g Windows 7) and applications that make up the desktop. The properties are characteristics such as how much RAM to allocate to each desktop created, how many desktops to create and so on. Before you create a template, you must have at least one image. Note that one image can be used by multiple templates to generate desktops. 1. Navigate to the Templates sub-tab. 2. Click on the green + sign. 3. You will see a dialog as shown below. 30

4. Enter the required template details. 31

Best Practice: Allocate a minimum 1536 MB (1.5GB) of memory to Windows 7 desktops. Set Maximum desktops to 2 and Pre-started desktops to 1 to go through an initial round of testing quickly. Set the policy to Upon Admin request for the 1 st round of testing. See the section below for an explanation of all the refresh policies. 5. Click on the Save button and wait for the desktops to be provisioned Creating desktops from the template There are two ways to create desktops. First, when you save a template, you can specify the maximum and pre-started number of desktops. This will cause the Kaviza manager to automatically generate the specified number of desktops. The second approach is to navigate to the Desktops tab, click on the template and then specify the maximum and pre-started number of desktops. If the minimum number of pre-started desktops is not specified, it will default to the maximum number. 1. Navigate to the Desktops main tab. 2. View the provisioned desktops from the Summary sub-tab. 3. Click on the template link to alter template properties at any time. 32

5 Assigning templates to users and groups This section describes how to specify the users and groups who have access to Kaviza desktops and how to associate them to a specific template (i.e. a specific type of desktop). We will assume the Kaviza server is configured to use an external user database in the step by step instructions below. Also, we ll assume for now that you will just set it up for specific users as opposed to groups. This is so that you can get started quickly and it avoids the situation where you do not have groups of users setup in your user database. 1. Register Users in Kaviza a. Navigate to the Admin tab and click on the Administer Users link. b. Click the green + icon to add users. c. Enter the UserID of the users in your external database and click on the Save button. d. If kmgr can find these users from AD, it will register them successfully. Note: Alternatively if you would like to roll the desktops out to groups of users, you can register the groups in Kaviza from the Administer Groups link. 2. Assign Users to Templates a. From the Admin tab, Click the Assign Desktop Templates link. b. You should see a panel as shown below. c. Click the pencil icon and assign the template to the users and groups. You are now ready to roll out desktops to the users! 33

6 Testing the connection as an end user Now that at least one template is set up, desktops have been created from it and users have been assigned to them, it is time to login as an end user and test the connection to Kaviza desktops. The free trial version will allow you test HDX connections to desktops. The instructions here provide steps to test the end user connections via the Kaviza Java Client and the browser. It also assumes you are using a Windows endpoint. If you are using Linux or a Mac OSX endpoint please refer to the Kaviza VDI-in-a-box Accessing Kaviza Desktops from Endpoints. 6.1 Configuring the end-point device for Kaviza Java Client Install the latest version of Java JRE on your end point Please ensure that you have JRE 1.5 or greater installed on your Windows end point. If not download the latest version from: Note: Best Practice: Java is required to launch the Kaviza Client. If you are accessing the desktop directly from the browser, JRE is not required. The Kaviza Java Client provides a nice login interface for your users. Using the Kaviza Java Client, you can provide a lock-down control on end points. In addition it can be used on end-points where browser access is not available. Please refer to the Kaviza Client User manual for additional details Install the Citrix Online plug-in for HDX connections The latest Citrix Online plug-in - Web for Windows can be downloaded from the following location. 34

Note: Installing Citrix Online Plug-in (Full) will allow you to connect to the desktops from the Citrix native receiver. For all other End Point Operating Systems, download the Citrix Online plug-in from Refer to the Kaviza VDI-in-a-box User Access Device Configuration Guide for specific links for a Mac or a Linux endpoint device. Connecting to the virtual desktop from the Kaviza Java Client The Kaviza Java Client will automatically launch the desktops using the HDX connection (ICA) protocol if the end-point is HDX enabled with the Citrix Online plug-in. If it does not find the Citrix Online plug-in on the end point, it will launch the desktop using RDP Launch the zero-install Kaviza Java client Option 1: Quick launch from a browser window 1. Open a new browser window 2. Launch the Kaviza Java Client from address]/dt/kavizaclient.jnlp 3. You should see a window such as the one shown below: 35

4. Check the Do this automatically for files and click on OK. 5. You will see a Java Starting window and then you will see the Kaviza Client console as shown below. 6. Enter the User name and Password. 7. Click on Login 8. You should be connected to the Kaviza desktop using a HDX or ICA connection. Option 2: Launching the Java Client from a command line 1. Open a command window. 2. Type the command: javaws address]/dt/kavizaclient.jnlp 36

Note: Refer to the Kaviza End Point Configuration Guide to create a desktop shortcut Connecting to the virtual desktop from the browser 1. Open a new browser window. 2. Type in the desktop address address]/ 3. You may see a website s security certificate message 4. Accept the security certificate by Clicking on Continue to this website (not recommended). 5. You should see the Kaviza Console. 6. Now login the user to connect to the desktop. 7.
