1 INFORMATION NOTE Welcome to Dakar! Herewith is some general information on administrative and other logistical arrangements made for the workshop. 1. Venue: Workshop facilities for this event have been arranged at the Hotel des Almadies, in Dakar, Senegal. Secretariat: The secretariat is also located at the Hotel des Almadies and will be open from Saturday 6 th to 11 th November, from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm. 4. Registration form and attendees All participants are kindly requested to complete the Registration Form at the end of this Information Note to confirm participation and to return to WARF Office by 15 October 2010 at the latest to Karnon Lofigue (klofigue@frao.info). 5. Preparation/ things to bring to the workshop a) Pre-workshop online discussion We strongly encourage you to participate in the preworkshop, on-line brainstorming /discussion which will be organized from 30 September onward to help clarify and define issues to be discussed during the sessions. A week before the workshop, we will summarize the discussions, which will be the point of departure for the discussions in Dakar. b) Project Action Plans i) a review of the 2010 Action Plan for your Project, with a short explanation of what worked well, and what can be improved; ii) the 2011 Action Plan; and iii) the 2011 Supervision Plan. c) Project best practices on value chains: A selected number of projects will be requested to showcase best practices and lessons learnt on value chains successfully implemented. The 1

2 objective is to disseminate information and knowledge on innovative practices implemented by projects, which can motivate other projects to undertake similar or new innovative work. 6. Documentation We encourage you to visit the Workshop for further information and documents which will be posted there at 7. Workshop thrust and methodology As you are aware, all the thematic topics have been decided by the projects through a survey carried out in July. These are: Update on IFAD Strategy, Policies and Procedures Learning and experience sharing on value chains - Understanding and mainstreaming value chains into operations Operations and project performance Building synergy and Action Plans Field visit Interactive session to learn from best practices. The workshop will be conducted in English and French (with full translation services) through structured presentations, experience sharing, panel discussion, case studies and working groups. 8. Meals and breaks. Breakfast is included, and two coffee breaks and a lunch will be served, from Monday through Thursday. An evening welcome cocktail will also be served. Restaurants of various types are at a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel. 9. Accommodation: Accommodation for this event has also been arranged at the Hotel des Almadies in Dakar. We are pleased that we have successfully negotiated with the Hotel very favourable rates within participants DSA, which include airport transport and at least 2 meals per day. We strongly urge you to stay at the hotel as the Workshop will be residential, allowing all participants to be at one hotel for the first time. Negotiated rate with the Hotel Almadies are: Standard room: CFA (approx. US$80); Deluxe room: CFA (approx. US$104). Projects will cover their own participation as well as cost of participants they bring from their country (Government official, organization leader, etc). 11. Costs and Method of payment: Settlement of hotel bills should be in cash or by credit card direct to the hotel cashier desk. The hotel accepts all major credit cards. 2

3 12. Transportation Services to/from the Airport: The Organizing Committee will arrange airport-hotel transfer for all participants staying at the hotel, free of charge to the Almadies Hotel. Please provide your arrival date, time and flight number using the Registration Form attached. 13. Telephone and Internet Access: For connection in the hotel, WiFi is available free of charge. SIM Cards for mobile phones are available at the hotel s Business Center. All personal calls made from your hotel room are at your own expense. 14. Entry Visa Requirements: Entry visa for Senegal is not required for: National passport holders from the following countries: African Countries members of ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States), countries member of the European Union (EU), Canada, Israel, Japan, Republic of China, United States of America. UNLP holders: please note that the UNLP should be valid for the duration of the visit to Dakar; Entry visa for Senegal is required for all other participants traveling with national passports. Please refer to the Senegalese consulate/embassy in your country of residence for visa requirements. In countries where there is no Consulate or Embassy of Senegal, the Organizing Committee will arrange for an entry visa for you; please advise us ahead of time. 15. Ticket Reconfirmation: Ticket reconfirmation for return flights, itinerary changes and other travel related issues will be handled by the Secretariat of the meeting. 16. Emergency Contact Information SOS Medecins at (221) Climate: The weather in Dakar at this time of year will be sunny, with an average temperature of 27º C ranging from a low of 23º C, to a high of 30º C.
