1 Resource Guide For lcohol, Drug, and Gambling Concerns/ddictions in Strathcona County No one plans to be addicted......but you can plan to be free from addictions.

2 Do you or does someone you kno The Resource Guide for lcohol, Drug and Gambling Concerns/ddictions in Strathcona County offers a variety of programs and services from organizations to help those wanting to be free from addictions. The Community Partners in ction Committee (CPC) is made up of representatives from social and human services organizations who identify social issues, needs and service gaps in Strathcona County and work together to address these issues. 3 w have a drug or alcohol problem? Check off statements that are true for you or for someone you know. Your drug or alcohol use has increased since you first started using. You are having the same drug prescribed by more than one doctor. You need to take drugs or alcohol to help you through new situations or social occasions. You can t remember things you have said or done while using drugs or alcohol. You spend more and more time with people who use drugs or alcohol. You cover up or lie about your drug or alcohol use. You have problems or miss time at work/school because of your drug or alcohol use. You have relationship problems with your spouse/children/parents because of your drug or alcohol use. You only go to parties or places where drugs or alcohol are available. Your drug or alcohol use is causing financial problems. You have legal problems because of your drug or alcohol use. You have hurt yourself or someone else while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. You have tried to cut down or stop taking drugs or alcohol but couldn t. Your risk-taking behavior has increased (e.g. sharing needles, having unprotected sex). You break promises to others because of your drug or alcohol use. Someone has told you they are concerned about your drug or alcohol use. The above are signs that may indicate you or someone you know has a drug or alcohol problem. If you checked off any of these boxes, your drug or alcohol use is likely causing problems in your life. The more boxes checked off, the more serious the problem may be. 2

First come, first served Family Counselling Services For families who are concerned about a youth s substance use. Family counselling can involve any or all family members. vailable by appointment Individual Youth Counselling Individual counselling for youth. Referrals to other addiction services and community supports are also provided, as well as information about how to access Protection of Children busing Drugs ct (PChD) services. Intensive Treatment Day Program six-week intensive treatment program for youth who are harmfully involved with alcohol, drugs and/or gambling, where youth can explore how substances have affected their lives, how to make changes in their lives, and learn what steps to take. Prevention and Health Promotion Prevention counsellors are available to consult, present and help build community and professional capacity in the area of addiction prevention and health promotion. HS, Edmonton ddiction dult Services venue, Edmonton Opioid Dependency Program Provides methadone or suboxone maintenance treatment to people who are dependent on opioids and helps them access services they need to live healthy lives. HS, Edmonton Youth Stabilization Youth Stabilization 6 10 day social detoxification, which supports and helps to stabilize youth while safely withdrawing from alcohol, other drugs or gambling. 5

"Many young people will drink alcohol and do not develop problems. However, if someone star ts when they're young and uses it on a regular basis, they may be putting themselves at risk." 6

8 HS, Protection of Children busing Drugs ct (PChD) ssists children under the age of 18 whose use of alcohol and/or drugs has caused, or is likely to cause, significant harm to themselves or others. The PChD ct allows parents or legal guardians to ask the court for a protection order for their child to be placed in a Protective Safe House a safe, secure and drug-free environment that supports the child s detoxification and transition to voluntary detoxification and treatment services. Edmonton Dream Centre Box 68169, 162 Bonnie Doon Mall, Edmonton Residential facility for women in crisis who struggle with drug or alcohol addictions, homelessness and other abuses. Women have the opportunity to work through their crises and have their children live with them. 7

9 Hope Misson venue, Edmonton Breakout Recovery Community Provides men with a supportive community, structure and accountability to help them make positive changes in their lives. Herb Jamieson Centre Short term and emergency room and board for men with little or no resources. Intox Centre Provides men who are under severe influence of alcohol and drugs a safe overnight stay while their condition stabilizes. Jellinek Society Recovery House venue, Edmonton n abstinence-based residence for men recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction who need support transitioning towards independent living. 47,000 Canadian deaths are linked to substance abuse annually - Health Officers Council of British Columbia 8

10 McDougall House ssociation venue, Edmonton residential facility for women who desire to live in a home environment, while working on their recovery from addiction. Our House ddiction Recovery Centre Stony Plain Road, Edmonton ssists men by helping them successfully withdraw from alcohol and other drug use within a structured residential environment. The recovery centre offers extensive programming such as day to day programming, life management skills, and understanding one s anger. 11 Parents Empowering Parents Continued Parents Empowering Parents Education, innovative programming, support and hope for individuals or families dealing with or concerned about substance abuse/ addiction. For families with children of any age, including adult children. U-Turn for Youth Provides drug and alcohol awareness education and offers youth a supportive social outlet, as they work on rebuilding their social skills and self confidence. Meetings are held every second Tuesday from 7:00 9:00 p.m. at Strathcona County Hall (lower level) 2001 Sherwood Drive, Sherwood Park. MEDD-X Motivational education/experience for ex-drug dealers. Provides insight into the impact drug dealing has on individuals, families, and the community, as well as a therapeutic opportunity for change. Problem Gambling Resource Network 3312 Parsons Road, Edmonton Offers one to two hour presentations to promote awareness about how gambling can impact the community and individuals. Recovery cres Society venue, Edmonton Recovery cres 90 day program that offers life skills, addiction education and on-going support throughout the recovery process. 10

13 Self Help Groups You are not the only one Group meetings offer men and women an opportunity for fellowship and to share their experiences, strengths and hopes with each other to help solve their common problems and to help others to recover from their addiction. Closed meetings are exclusively intended for those facing addictions. Open meetings are intended for individuals with addictions, their families and friends affected by the addiction. l-non/lateen and lcoholics nonymous groups may meet in community spaces, such as churches, libraries or community centres. They are not affiliated with these institutions, which offer meeting space at no or a low cost. Please direct any uestions related to these groups to l-non/lateen and lcoholics nonymous, as well as to learn about any changes or updates to the meetings listed. lcohol Specific Groups l-non and lateen

14 l-non is a support program that helps people who have been affected by another person s drinking. lateen is for teens to find support and understanding from people their own age who are going through similar difficulties. Child and dolescent Mental Health Services Intake Number: Mental health and addictions services and support for youth 5-18 years of age, and their families, who reuire mental health assessment and treatment. Qualified individuals work together with families in the development of treatment goals; focusing on the child/youth strengths, while creating opportunities to experience success. Safe Place (24 hour crisis line) OC Emergency shelter located in Sherwood Park for women and children experiencing domestic violence or under the threat of abuse, up to a maximum of 21 days. Domestic Violence Unit Follow-up with victims of domestic violence, providing liaisons with community support services such as the shelter, Child and Family Services, and the court system, assisting victims with the judicial process, ensuring judicial compliance by offenders. Presentations on topics such as the impact of domestic violence on children and other domestic-violence related topics. 21 Strathcona County Family and Community Services 200, 501 Festival venue, Sherwood Park Provides a wide range of supportive programs and services for Strathcona County residents, including children, youth, seniors, individuals and families. Services include: Counselling Supports Offers individual, family, and/or couples counselling on a sliding fee scale based on net family income. Reasons for accessing counselling may include divorce/separation, family conflict, social isolation, stress management and grief and loss. Parent Teen Conflict Resolution Support for parents and teens experiencing conflict and an opportunity to come together to resolve problems. Youth Outreach For youth from years who need help. Reasons for accessing service may include struggles at home, difficulty accessing community resources, searching for housing options, or just being unsure about where else to get help. O C Strathcona County Victim Services 911 Bison Way, Sherwood Park OC volunteer based program that works in conjunction with the RCMP to provide immediate assistance, support, information and agency referral to victims of crime and trauma in Strathcona County. Strathcona Youth Justice Committee 200, 501 Festival venue, Sherwood Park OC This committee carries out the Extrajudicial Sanctions Program to young offenders, affording them the opportunity to make amends for their offence with restorative justice practises. 20
