The development of listening techniques and analysis of selected works are emphasized in a survey of musical literature. SUN Course Number: none Credit Hours: 3 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Prerequisite(s) Successful completion of TRE 089 or appropriate score on assessment test Co-requisite(s) none Intended Course Goals By the end of the semester, students will be able to: 1. Students will survey major styles and genres of music through reading, listening and discussion. 2. Students will identify the functions of music in society by examining the personal, societal, ethical, racial, gender-based, global and historical factors that may influence the expression of composition and performance of music. 3. Students will recognize, describe and employ the elements of music and terminology specific to the study of the discipline. 4. Students will employ critical listening skills to recorded examples of musical literature and document their perceptions through discussion and writing. 5. Students will research and write critically on topics appropriate to the study of music.
5 Course Competencies and Objectives By the end of the semester, students will be able to: Competency 1 Students will survey major styles and genre of music through reading, listening and discussion. Objective 1.1 Students will compare and contrast stylistic elements of the major Western compositional style periods: Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary. Objective 1.2 Students will recognize and name selected major works and their composers. Objective 1.3 Students will identify characteristics of selected choral genres and forms: oratorio, opera (aria, recitative), cantata, mass, organum, chanson, madrigal, motet, and art song. Objective 1.4 Students will recognize and state the characteristics of selected instrumental genres and forms: symphony, suite, concerto, sonata, chamber music, overture, sinfonia, and concertino. Objective 1.5 Students will compare and contrast the use of compositional elements in Western and non-western musical works. Competency 2 Students will identify the functions of music in society by examining the personal, societal, ethical, racial, gender-based, global and historical factors that may influence the composition and performance of music. Objective 2.1 Students will identify functions of music in society. Objective 2.2 Students will identify examples of sacred and secular functions of music in societies using appropriate and discipline-specific vocabulary. Objective 2.3 Students will describe origins and characteristics of selected styles and genres of music. Objective 2.4 Students will describe stylistic similarities of music from selected historical periods and cultures. Objective 2.5 Students will discuss the role of context, place and purpose in the musical arts. Objective 2.6 Students will evaluate representative musical "artifacts" from selected cultures. Objective 2.7 Students will identify the key historic events that encouraged the composition, performance and appreciation of selected music within a society. Competency 3 Students will recognize, describe and employ the elements of music and terminology specific to the study of the discipline. Objective 3.1 Students will recognize and describe the elements of music: melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, form, tempo and dynamics. Objective 3.2 Students will describe the use of the elements of music in recorded examples. Objective 3.3 Students will accurately describe traditional Western performing forces (medium); voice types, instruments and ensembles. Objective 3.4 Students will describe the elements of music in selected non-western music. Objective 3.5 Students will discuss how the universal elements and principles of design are reflected in musical arts. Competency 4 Students will employ critical listening skills to recorded examples of musical literature and document their perceptions through discussion and writing. Objective 4.1 Students will evaluate representative musical selections from various genre. Objective 4.2 Students will analyze a variety of music from selected cultures.. Objective 4.3 Students will critique musical selections from various historical periods. Objective 4.4 Students will participate in an ongoing discussion of the nature of beauty and musical aesthetics.
